All-optical wavelength converter based on Er-doped laser cavity andintracavity LD amplifier

An optical wavelength converter is proposed based on a laser cavity that has a laser-diode amplifier as an optically driven gain modulator and an Er-doped, slow-response gain medium. The device converts ASK signal wavelengths over ~8.7 nm. Though the converted NRZ data signal is inverted, it is amplified by 18 dB with its extinction ratios improved to nearly unity. Although the data rate converted in the experiment is no more than 0.5 Mb/s, high-gain planar-waveguide technology may reduce the cavity length and increase the data rate     

Ionic graft copolymerization. V. Graft copolymerization of β-propiolactone onto the trunk polymers containing carboxylic acid,sulfonic acid,and other salts

β-Propiolactone (βPL) was graft-copolymerized onto styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers containing various carboxylates or sulfonates, composed of anions and cations having different electronegativities. In parallel, the mechanism of polymerizations of βPL by relatively neutral catalysts was studied in comparison with the behaviors of graft copolymerizations. In the graft copolymerization onto the trunk polymer containing various carboxylates, a lower electronegativity of countercation favors a higher anionic polymerization activity and the order of rate of polymerization coincides with that of anionic activities of catalysts. On the other hand, in the case of trunk polymer containing sulfonates, a higher electronegativity of countercation favors a cationic polymerization activity, and the order of rate of polymerization coincides with that of cationic activity of catalyst. The order of grafting efficiency at fixed total conversion coincides almost with that of anionic activity. The comparatively higher grafting efficiency in the grafting onto trunk polymer containing carboxylic acid might support an anionic graft copolymerization mechanism by carboxyl anion. The two following mechanisms were proposed for the initiation of the polymerization by the trunk polymer containing sodium sulfonate, in which acrylic acid is transformed from βPL.     

Basic investigation for life assessment technology of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel

In order to develop life assessment techniques for aged components made of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel, specimens were artificially deteriorated by aging, creep and fatigue tests at elevated temperatures, and associated changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties were examined. It was observed that aging resulted in formation of Laves phase causing a decrease in toughness. The creep damage in base metal could be correlated with decrease in hardness, while creep damage in weldments could be correlated with the area fraction and density of creep voids. Creep rupture in weldments occurred in the fine-grained heat affected zone by the formation and growth of creep voids. The fatigue damage in base metal correlated to the maximum length of a crack among micro-cracks initiated during fatigue cycles.     

Changes in vasoactive intestinal peptide mRNA levels in the rat suprachiasmatic nucleus following p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) treatment under light/dark conditions

Photic stimulus and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) are two factors known to regulate vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) synthesis in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). To explore the role of 5-HT in the photic stimulus-induced change in VIP synthesis, we investigated the changes in level of VIP mRNA under a 12 h light/12 h dark cycle following depletion of 5-HT by intraperitoneal administration of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) methyl ester (200 mg/kg concentration) for 3 successive days. To estimate VIP mRNA expression, we performed in situ hybridization using imaging plates combined with microcomputer-based imaging analysis. In light-phase, total signals of VIP mRNA from the PCPA-treated rats showed a significant decrease compared with those from the saline-treated control rats. However, in dark-phase, there were no significant decreases between the PCPA-treated rats and the saline-control rats. The present results strongly suggest that 5-HT neuronal inputs to the SCN interfere with the effect of photic stimulus on VIP synthesis at the mRNA level.     

Rapid detection cytomegalovirus pneumonia in recipients of bone marrow transplant: evaluation and comparison of five survey methods for bronchoalveolar lavage fluid

To detect cytomegalovirus-associated interstitial pneumonia (CMV-IP) in recipients of BMT in its earliest stage, five CMV methods were assessed for their usefulness using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as the test specimen. Of the 43 cases enrolled in the study, PCR was positive in 12 cases, shell vial in eight, culture in eight and cytology in three. There were no positive cases in in situ hybridization. Based on this result, the 43 cases were classified into four groups: Group 1, three cases: positive in PCR, shell vial and cytology; Group 2, five cases: positive in PCR and shell vial; Group 3, four cases: positive only in PCR; and Group 4, 31 cases: negative in all CMV tests. Cases in Group 1 were judged as having the highest risk of overt CMV-IP. They were successfully treated with a combination of ganciclovir and immunoglobulin. Group 2 was diagnosed as having active CMV infection and ganciclovir monotherapy was effective for these patients. Groups 3 and 4 were not given anti-CMV therapy, but they were free from CMV-related manifestations throughout the study. The sensitivity and specificity of each survey method for the detection of Groups 1 and 2 were 1.0 and 0.89 in PCR, 1.0 and 1.0 in shell vial, 0.88 and 1.0 in culture, and 0.38 and 1.0 in cytology. Similarly, the positive and negative predictive values were 0.67 and 1.0 in PCR, 1.0 and 1.0 in shell vial, 1.0 and 0.97 in culture, and 1.0 and 0.88 in cytology. Thus, CMV survey on bronchoalveolar fluid was thought to be useful in detecting post BMT CMV-IP in its earliest stage.
