Determination of performance of non-ideal aluminized explosives

Non-ideal explosives can have Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) detonation pressure significantly different from those expected from existing thermodynamic computer codes, which usually allows finding the parameters of ideal detonation of individual high explosives with good accuracy. A simple method is introduced by which detonation pressure of non-ideal aluminized explosives with general formula C(a)H(b)N(c)O(d)Al(e) can be predicted only from a, b, c, d and e at any loading density without using any assumed detonation products and experimental data. Calculated detonation pressures show good agreement with experimental values with respect to computed results obtained by complicated computer code. It is shown here how loading density and atomic composition can be integrated into an empirical formula for predicting detonation pressure of proposed aluminized explosives.     

GIBC formulation for the resonant frequencies and fielddistribution of a substrate-mounted dielectric resonator

Dielectric resonators (DR's) are widely used in telecommunication systems. A method is proposed here to find the resonant frequency and field distribution in a substrate-mounted DR structure. The field of a dielectric rod has been decomposed into a combination of guided modes with unknown coefficients and an unknown continuous spectrum of radiation field. The unknowns are then obtained by applying two generalized impedance boundary conditions (GIBC's) representing the substrate and air layers at the top and bottom of the DR. This leads to the calculation of the total (guided+radiation) field as well as the resonant frequency of the structure     

Operational matrices of Bernstein polynomials and their applications

The Bernstein polynomials (B-polynomials) operational matrices of integration P, differentiation D and product ? are derived. A general procedure of forming these matrices are given. These matrices can be used to solve problems such as calculus of variations, differential equations, optimal control and integral equations. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the operational matrices.     

Production of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides in Iranian ultrafiltered white cheese prepared with Lactobacillus brevis KX572382

In this study, ultrafiltered (UF) Iranian white cheese made with adjunct cultures including six Lactobacillus isolates (Lactobacillus brevis, L. casei and L. plantarum) from traditional Iranian Motal cheese. The peptide extract (<5 kDa) of cheese samples were assessed for angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity during ripening (5 °C). Among the strains used, L. brevis KX572382 (M8) was selected because of the greater increase in (ACE)-inhibitory activity in the cheese (P < 0.05). The highest activity of M8 extract was observed on the 28th (71.72%) day of ripening (P < 0.05). Proteolytic activity assessment and RP-HPLC peptide profile of M8 water-soluble extracts (WSEs) indicated the effect of M8 on further protein degradation due to secondary proteolysis. A total of 7 different peptide sequences, previously known in the literature for their ACE-inhibitory activity, were tentatively identified by LC/ESI-MS in 28-day M8 peptide extract. Although the effect of M8 on pH and the proteolysis development in cheese was significant, no adverse effect was observed on the sensory properties. In conclusion, M8 strain can enhance the functional properties of Iranian UF white cheese.     

A comparative study on different concentration methods of extracts obtained from two raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) cultivars: evaluation of anthocyanins and phenolics contents and antioxidant activity

The effects of conventional (CV) and microwave (MW) heating on total soluble solid (TSS) content, total anthocyanin content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of raspberry juice obtained from two cultivars of Amol (AM) and Siyahkal (SK) were scrutinised. Antioxidant activity of the juices was measured by 2,2 diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity and expressed as EC₅₀ value. In the both methods, the concentration rate constant for the juices was significantly decreased by increasing operational pressure from 12 to 100 kPa (P < 0.05). A first‐order reaction kinetic model was successfully fitted for the degradation of monomeric anthocyanins at all operating pressures. The results also showed that thermal treatment of MW compared CV in both SK and AM cultivars caused a lower decrease in the TAC, TPC and antioxidant activity. Moreover, the changes in trend of the antioxidant activities due to the thermal treatment were positively correlated with the TPC (r = 0.74, P < 0.05) and TAC (r = 0.61, P < 0.05).     

Sealing of Rotary Drums for Operation Under Pressurized Conditions

In practice, rotary drums are usually designed for operation under vacuum conditions. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed for sealing the rotary drums under pressurized operating conditions. The proposed system is based on applying a secondary pressurized volume around the leaking gap of the drum. By maintaining the pressure of this volume a little above the pressure of the drum, it is possible to prevent leakage of gases to the ambient environment. The objective of the controller in this system is to keep the pressure of the secondary volume above the pressure level of the drum, independent of the disturbances, which may exerted on the system by the wind outside the drum. The control system is also required to trace the variations in the drum pressure, with the least fluctuations in the pressure difference between the drum and the volume.
