Three Dimensional Separation with Spiral—Focus in a Decelerating Duct Flow （Effect of Asymmetric Inlet Boundary Layer Thickness）

An experimental apparatus was developed to study the three dimensional separated flow with spiral-foci. The internal decelerating flow was generated by the air suction from a side wall to produce the separation on an opposite-side wall. The relation between the upstream boundary layer and the generation of spiral-foci in the separation region was observed by a tuft method. As a result, it was clarified that the spiral-focus type separation could be produced on the side wall and its behavior was closely related to the vortices supplied into the separation region from the boundary layer developing along top wall or bottom one.     

Advanced fabrication technologies of integrated-type structure for a-Si solar cells

This paper proposes a new advanced fabrication technology for a low-cost integrated-type a-Si solar cell. Integrated-type cells provide many advantages and have been industrialized with a laser patterning method. However, a higher throughput and more efficient patterning method was required for applying a-Si solar cells to a power generating system. Plasma CVM (Chemical Vaporization Machining) was first applied to advanced patterning because of its advantages of high speed and selectivity. In this method, a plasma generated under high pressure localizes near the wire electrode and concentrates reactive radicals. As a result, we achieved an etching rate of more than 1 μm/s and selective patterning of a 200 μm-wide a-Si layer in 1 s multiline patterning was also developed for large-area modules.     

Effects of High Irradiance and Low Water Temperature on Photoinhibition and Repair of Photosystems in Marimo (Aegagropila linnaei) in Lake Akan,Japan

The green alga Aegagropila linnaei often forms spherical aggregates called “marimo” in Lake Akan in Japan. In winter, marimo are exposed to low water temperatures at 1–4 °C but protected from strong sunlight by ice coverage, which may disappear due to global warming. In this study, photoinhibition in marimo was examined at 2 °C using chlorophyll fluorescence and 830 nm absorption. Filamentous cells of A. linnaei dissected from marimo were exposed to strong light at 2 °C. Photosystem II (PSII) was markedly photoinhibited, while photosystem I was unaffected. When the cells with PSII damaged by the 4 h treatment were subsequently illuminated with moderate repair light at 2 °C, the maximal efficiency of PSII was recovered to the level before photoinhibition. However, after the longer photoinhibitory treatments, PSII efficiency did not recover by the repair light. When the cells were exposed to simulated diurnal light for 12 h per day, which was more ecological, the cells died within a few days. Our results showed new findings of the PSII repair at 2 °C and serious damage at the cellular level from prolonged high-light treatments. Further, we provided a clue to what may happen to marimo in Lake Akan in the near future.     

Building a CIM system for compound plant: Utilization of distributed processing system

The position of a production management system in a computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) system is to serve as the nucleus of the plant CIM system that connects the plant production to other departments such as marketing, research and development, and distribution departments. A production management system that integrates the flow of goods with information in a plant, and thus manages production in it, was developed as the first step toward application of CIM to a powder plant. The method of building a distributed system is one way to build a CIM system. This method creates a system in the required function units, which are connected by a network to expand the system function. It offers advantages in extensibility, flexibility, and rapid implementation.     

Study of asynchronizing phenomena using generator model with field mutual leakage reactance

This paper describes the effect of mutual leakage reactance in the rotor circuit on the analysis of generator transient characteristics. The authors derive a detailed equivalent circuit model for a 48P‐15,750‐kVA generator, analyze sudden short circuits and asynchronization phenomena of the generator by simulations with an electromagnetic transients program (ATP‐EMTP), and compare the results with experimental data. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Design of an adaptive observer for sensorless vector control of induction machines under regenerating conditions

The objective of this investigation is to stabilize a sensorless vector control system of induction motors by means of an adaptive observer in regenerating mode at very low speed. The adaptive observer gain is designed by means of the Routh–Hurwitz criterion. It is verified by simulation and experiment that the proposed system is stable. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kinetics and photoeffects of oxidation and reduction of hexaamminecobalt complex in alkaline media

Cyclic voltammograms of hexaamminecobalt complex have been measured in high pH solutions. The spectroscopic result suggested that hydroamminecobalt complex adsorbed on the electrode surface during cathodic polarization, and this species grew to form cobalt hydroxide after a long time of electrolysis. In the anodic process, the reaction orders for pH and NH₃ were both |1|. Based on these results, the reaction mechanism has been discussed.The effect of light on the electrode process has been studied by irradiating with ultraviolet light of the 254 nm mercury resonance line. It has been indicated that the hydroxoammine complex is decomposed to cobalt hydroxide and free ligand under light.     

Characteristics of a nitrogen-jet system in KUR-ISOL

The basic characteristics of a N₂-jet system coupled with a surface-ionization type ion source have been investigated at KUR-ISOL. The yields of transported activities and ionized ions have been measured under various conditions for both the He- and N₂-jets. The effects of N₂ gas upon the ionization and skimmer efficiency have been investigated. It was found that N₂ gas has almost no effect upon the ionization efficiency, but causes poorer skimmer efficiency than He gas owing to the large opening angle of aerosol particles at the outlet of a capillary. A mixture of He and N₂ gases was also tested.
