Active transport driven by molecular motors is a key technology for the continued miniaturization of lab-on-a-chip devices, because it is expected to enable nanofluidic devices with channel diameters of less than 1 microm and total channel lengths on the order of 1 mm. An important metric for a transport mechanism employed in an analytic device is dispersion, because it critically affects the sensitivity and resolution. Here, we investigate the mechanisms responsible for the dispersion of a swarm of "molecular shuttles", consisting of functionalized microtubules propelled by surface-adhered kinesin motor proteins. Using a simple model and measurements of the path persistence length, motional diffusion coefficient, and the distribution of average velocities, we found that, at the time scale relevant in the envisioned nanobiodevices, variations in the time-averaged velocities between shuttles will make a stronger contribution to the dispersion of the swarm than both the fluctuations around the time-averaged velocity of an individual shuttle and the fluctuations in path length due to wiggling within the channel. Overall, the dispersion of such molecular shuttles is comparable to the dispersion of a sample plug transported by electroosmotic flow.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of resistivities of gas sensors made of SnO2, Pd-doped SnO2, and ThO2-doped SnO2 with Pd has been investigated in air containing reducing gases such as CO, H2, and C3H8. The curves for ThO2-doped sensors were significantly influenced by the reducing gases as compared to the sensors without ThO2. From these results, it is found that in Pd-doped SnO2 sensors the dopant plays an important role in oxidizing the surface of SnO2 above 170°C, and that the addition of ThO2 to Pd-doped SnO2 enhances the effects of Pd by removing the adsorbed hydroxyl on SnO2. It is also apparent that the interactions between reducing gases in air and SnO2-based sensors depend upon the oxidizing rates of the surface of SnO2, as well as the amounts of the adsorbed hydroxyl on SnO2.  相似文献

Macroscopic T-type Ca2+ currents, which are often observed in fetal and neonatal cardiac muscle cells, were not found in normal (0 of 17) adult feline ventricular myocytes. However, they were present in most (15 of 21) myocytes isolated from adult feline left ventricles with long-standing pressure-overload-induced hypertrophy. This is the first study to provide evidence in a large mammal, such as the cat, that T-type Ca2+ channels may be reexpressed in adults in association with hypertrophy resulting from slow progressive pressure overload. Importantly, this expression was stable for the duration of the hypertrophy process and was not associated with abrupt pressure overload. T-type Ca2+ currents were separated from L-type Ca2+ currents by exploiting the differences in their voltage dependence of steady-state inactivation. Depolarizations from -80 mV revealed a rapidly activating inward current that peaked in magnitude at -30 mV (-1.8 +/- 0.9 [mean +/- SD] pA/pF) and fully inactivated within 100 milliseconds in 15 of 21 hypertrophied myocytes studied. Further depolarizations activated progressively less T-type Ca2+ current, so that at +10 mV the L-type Ca2+ current predominated. In the hypertrophied myocytes that demonstrated both T-type and L-type Ca2+ currents, two distinct peaks occurred in their current-voltage relations. T-type Ca2+ currents were not evident in any of the 17 normal adult feline left ventricular myocytes studied. The purpose of T-type Ca2+ currents in hypertrophy is unclear. However, their presence may make hypertrophied myocardium more prone to spontaneous action potentials and increase the likelihood for arrhythmias in partially depolarized hypertrophied myocardium.  相似文献

This paper presents a peak load forecasting system using multilayer neural networks and fuzzy theory. Electric load forecasting in power systems is a very important task from the perspective of reliability and economic operation. Daily peak load forecasting is one of the basic operations of generation scheduling for the following day. Therefore, many statistical methods have been developed and used for such forecasting even though it has been difficult to construct a proper functional model. The developed system is applied by neural network and fuzzy theory to forecast for daily, weekly and monthly peak load. The system consists of an engineering workstation (EWS) and a personal computer (PC). The EWS is for learning and data-bases, and the PC is for man-machine interface such as forecasting operation. The system has been used since June 1993. The result evaluated with an absolute mean error is 1.63 percent for 10 months. From the results shown here, the system applied by neural network and fuzzy theory has high validity.  相似文献

Detailed chemical analysis of wintertime PM?? collected at a rural village site in Germany showed the presence of a series of compounds that correlated very well with levoglucosan, a known biomass burning tracer compound. Nitrated aromatic compounds with molecular formula C?H?NO? (M(w) 169) correlated particularly well with levoglucosan, indicating that they originated from biomass burning as well. These compounds were identified as a series of methyl-nitrocatechol isomers (4-methyl-5-nitrocatechol, 3-methyl-5-nitrocatechol, and 3-methyl-6-nitrocatechol) based on the comparison of their chromatographic and mass spectrometric behaviors to those from reference compounds.Aerosol chamber experiments suggest that m-cresol, which is emitted from biomass burning at significant levels, is a precursor for the detected methyl-nitrocatechols. The total concentrations of these compounds in the wintertime PM??were as high as 29 ng m?3, indicating the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) originating from the oxidation of biomass burning VOCs contributed non-negligible amounts to the regional organic aerosol loading.  相似文献

A boost converter with a 940-V/4.4 A GaN-HEMT as the main switching device was demonstrated to show the possibility of using high-voltage GaN-HEMTs in power electronic applications. The demonstrated circuit achieved an output power of 122 W and a power efficiency of 94.2% under a drain peak voltage as high as 350 V and a switching frequency of 1 MHz. The dual field-plate structure realized high-voltage switching operation with high power efficiency as dynamic on-resistance was suppressed by an increase of the current collapse phenomena.  相似文献

We have developed a novel sensor that enables us to measure the relative story displacement of a building structure in real time. This lateral displacement sensor (LDS) is composed of a light‐emitting diode (LED) array, which is fixed on the ceiling, and a position‐sensitive detector (PSD) unit, which is placed on the floor. We optimized the LDS to achieve high accuracy in lateral displacement measurement. The accuracy was evaluated to be 60 µm by conducting shaking table tests. Two LDSs were implemented in an actual building equipped with an active variable stiffness (AVS) system, and the building was vibrated with seismic waveforms by an exciter placed on the rooftop. The seismic displacement of the second floor relative to the first floor was measured using the LDS. Furthermore, the inclination angle of the second floor could be measured using the LDS during the seismic vibration. Using the AVS system, we realized the residual displacement of the second floor without inducing damage to the building, and succeeded in real‐time residual displacement measurement for the first time. These results indicate that the LDS is useful for the health diagnosis of a building structure. © 2011 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Monoacylglycerols (MAG) are impurities present in biodiesel as a result of incomplete reactions. MAG often solidify in biodiesel even at room temperature because of their high melting points. This worsens the cold-flow properties such as the cloud point and pour point. We hypothesized that several types of MAG solidify simultaneously; therefore, we performed differential scanning calorimetry of binary mixtures of MAG to elucidate their interactions during solidification. Three thermodynamic formulas were then applied to the experimental results: (1) non-solid-solution, (2) solid-solution, and (3) compound formation models. Binary mixtures of MAG showed complicated liquidus curves with multiple upward convex shapes, with which only the compound formation model fitted well. This model was applied to multicomponent mixtures that consisted of MAG and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) as surrogate biodiesel fuels. We confirmed that the model still worked well. The results show that the compound formation model has good potential for predicting the cold-flow properties of biodiesel.  相似文献

Local mechanical properties in depth and near the surface of MoDTC/ZDDP and ZDDP tribofilms, which exhibited obviously different friction coefficients in a pin-on-disc test, were determined by using a nanoindentation technique combined with in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) observation. Tapping-mode AFM observation revealed that the MoDTC/ZDDP film was much rougher than the ZDDP film. Nanoindentation measurement revealed that the MoDTC/ZDDP and ZDDP tribofilms possessed different elasto-plasticities around a depth of several nanometers from the surface, although both films showed the same hardness and modulus depth distributions except in the surface area. The same mechanical depth distributions indicated that both kinds of tribofilm were functionally graded materials; that is, they consisted of a layer near the surface with lower hardness and modulus and providing lubrication and a base layer with higher hardness and modulus and serving to modify property differences at the interface. Most importantly, the different elasto-plasticities near the tribofilm surfaces revealed that the MoDTC/ZDDP tribofilm possessed lower shearing yield stress than the ZDDP tribofilm. The results of this study suggest that the presence of some solid lubricants such as MoS2 just below the MoDTC/ZDDP film surface reduced the boundary friction coefficient.  相似文献

The design of nanoscale transport systems utilizing motor proteins as engines has advanced rapidly. Here, actin/myosin- and microtubule/kinesin-based molecular shuttles are compared with respect to their requirements for track designs. To this end, the trajectory persistence length of actin filaments gliding on myosin-coated surfaces has been experimentally determined to be equal to 8.8 +/- 2 microm. This measurement complements an earlier determination of the trajectory persistence length of microtubules gliding on kinesin-coated surfaces and enables a comparison of the accessible track designs for kinesin and myosin motor-powered systems. Despite the 200-fold smaller stiffness of actin filaments compared to that of microtubules, the dimensions of myosin tracks for actin filaments have to be quite similar to the dimensions of kinesin tracks for microtubules (radii larger than 200 nm and widths smaller than 0.9 microm compared to 600 nm and 19 microm). The difference in gliding speed is shown to require additional consideration in the design of track modules.  相似文献
