The new generation of engineering professionals needs to know not only the scientific and engineering principles, but also have extensive knowledge about arts, literature, and social sciences. They need far-reaching vision for the future in order to understand grand challenges on the technical-level, the system-level, and the social aspects of topics that are of importance to the modern society. One solution is to emphasize fundamental courses such as mathematics and physics with new interpretation to correlate with real-world applications. It is important to include system-oriented topics in the curriculum so that students know how to apply the basic principles, The key focus should be placed on analysis and design skills, and effective communication is essential to address any large-scale problems  相似文献

We examined whether heart rate (HR) could be used to estimate energy expenditure (EE) in cattle. Six Hereford heifers (345 +/- 10.8 kg BW) 12 mo of age were implanted with HR radio transmitters and maintained in individual pens under the following treatments: 1) shade or sun exposure, 2) high- or low-energy diet, and 3) feeding in morning or afternoon. The HR of animals was measured every .5 h during 3 mo; measurements of oxygen consumption and HR were made simultaneously in the morning and in the afternoon while animals were resting and exercising. Average daily HR (52 +/- 4 beats/min) and average daily EE (380 +/- 9 kJ/kg(.75)) in animals on the low-energy diet were less than values in animals on the high-energy diet (94 +/- 4 beats/min and 653 +/- 9 kJ/ kg(.75), respectively). For each animal and within each diet, linear regressions best described the relationship between HR and EE in resting animals, whereas quadratic regressions best described this relationship for exercising animals. The quadratic equation for the exercising animals could also be used for resting animals. In addition, a constant value of EE per heart beat (EE pulse) for each individual resting animal was found and gave accurate estimations. This method was convenient because 1) no exercise equipment was needed to generate the regression equations and 2) EE pulse was less affected by diet than was EE estimated by regression equations. We conclude that HR, a relatively easy measurement, can be useful and accurate in estimating EE. To increase the accuracy of the estimation of EE by HR, the relationship of HR to EE should be established for each animal. In addition, the nutritional regimen for the animal in which EE is estimated should be used for the animal in establishing the relationship.  相似文献

The temperature and pressure dependence of the thermal pressure coefficient and internal pressure for eight polymer solids are calculated. The principal results are as follows: (1) The pressure dependence of the thermal pressure coefficient at constant temperature is relatively small. (2) For some solid polymers, as a function of temperature, a maximum in the thermal pressure coefficient is predicted in the solid region, and the temperatures corresponding to the maximum values are estimated. (3) For most solid polymers, the zeropressure internal pressure increases with increasing temperature over the entire temperature range to the glass transition temperature or the melting point. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this study, we have investigated sensitivities of the ion implanted silicon wafers processed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA), which can reveal the variation of sheet resistance as a function of annealing temperature as well as implantation parameters. All the wafers were sequentially implanted by the arsenic or phosphorous implantations at 40, 80, and 100 keV with the dose level of 1014 to 2 × 1016 ions/cm2. Rapid thermal annealing was carried out for 10 s by the infrared irradiation at a temperature between 850 and 1150°C in the nitrogen ambient. The activated wafer was characterized by the measurements of the sheet resistance and its uniformity mapping. The values of sensitivities are determined from the curve fitting of the experimental data to the fitting equation of correlation between the sheet resistance and process variables. From the sensitivity values and the deviation of sheet resistance, the optimum process conditions minimizing the effects of straggle in process parameters are obtained. As a result, a strong dependence of the sensitivity on the process variables, especially annealing temperatures and dose levels is also found. From the sensitivity analysis of the 10 s RTA process, the optimum values for the implant dose and annealing temperature are found to be in the range of 1016 ions/cm2 and 1050-1100°C, respectively. The sensitivity analysis of sheet resistance will provide valuable data for accurate activation process, offering a guideline for dose monitoring and calibration of ion implantation process.  相似文献

A single integrated examination using regional measurements of perfusion from contrast-enhanced MRI and three-dimensional (3D) strain from tissue-tagged MRI was developed to differentiate infarcted myocardium from adjacent tissue with functional abnormalities. Ten dogs were studied at baseline and 10 days after a 2-hour occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Strain was determined using a 3D finite element model. Two-dimensional measurements of hypoenhancing regions were highly correlated with myocardial viability (r = 0.96). Signal intensity versus time curves obtained from contrast-enhanced MRI were used for quantitative perfusion analysis. The remote and adjacent noninfarcted tissue of the dogs with LAD occlusion, as well as the infarcted tissue, exhibited abnormal deformation patterns as compared to normal dogs (positive predictive value (PPV) of strain determination of infarction = 66%). Integration of contrast-enhanced MRI results with 3D strain analysis enabled the delineation of the myocardial infarction (PPV = 100%) from functionally compromised myocardium. This integrated cardiac examination shows promise for noninvasive serial assessment of potentially jeopardized noninfarcted myocardium to study the process of infarct remodeling and expansion.  相似文献

Public awareness and misunderstandings of lactose intolerance are at an all-time high. Many people erroneously believe they are lactose intolerant or develop gastrointestinal symptoms after intake of lactose. Consequently, lactose-containing foods such as milk and other dairy foods may be eliminated unnecessarily from the diet. Because these foods are a major source of calcium, low intake of them can compromise calcium nutriture. This, in turn, can increase the risk of major chronic diseases such as osteoporosis (porous bones) and hypertension. This review is intended to help dietetics professionals alleviate clients' fears about lactose intolerance and recommend dietary strategies to improve tolerance to lactose. Scientific findings indicate that the prevalence of lactose intolerance is grossly overestimated. Other physiologic and psychologic factors can contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic lactose intolerance. Scientific findings also indicate that people with laboratory-confirmed low levels of the enzyme lactase can consume 1 serving of milk with a meal or 2 servings of milk per day in divided doses at breakfast and dinner without experiencing symptoms. Several dietary strategies are available to help lactose maldigesters include milk and other dairy foods in their diet without experiencing symptoms.  相似文献

Early studies have demonstrated that implantation of laboratory preparations of demineralized freeze dried bone (DFDB) into the thigh muscle of mice induces ectopic osteoinduction. However, with the development of commercial preparations of DFDB for clinical use, concerns have been raised as to the osteoinductive properties of such preparations. The aim of this study was to investigate the osteoinductive potential of some commercial preparations of DFDB compared to a newly developed product which incorporates DFDB into a collagen sponge. Commercial preparations of DFDB or the DFDB/collagen sponge were inserted into the thigh muscles of 60 adult Swiss CD-1 mice. At the completion of each experimental period (7, 14, 30, 90 and 180 days), the animals were sacrificed, and the hindquarters of the mice were radiographed. The area where each graft had been placed was then excised, processed for light microscopy, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin or von Kossa's stain. Histological analysis of the DFDB/collagen sponges demonstrated significant remineralization which increased with time. Remineralization of the DFDB/collagen sponges was verified by radiographs which showed a significant increase in radiopacity over time. There was no radiographic evidence of mineralized tissue formation or remineralization in any of the commercial DFDB samples studied. At all time points studied, histological analyses failed to show evidence of bone formation for any of the preparations. The results suggest that commercially available DFDB is not osteoinductive in the murine model and question the use of such materials in clinical periodontics. The results found for the DFDB/collagen sponge indicate a different mechanism of activity from DFDB as evidenced by its rapid remineralization. The role this remineralization process has in osteoinduction is unknown and requires further study.  相似文献

An electroabsorption modulator has been monolithically integrated with an extended-cavity laser, which incorporates a Bragg reflector. Actively modelocked at the fundamental cavity resonance frequency of 4.5 GHz, the laser provides a train of 6.3 ps pulses with a centre wavelength of 1544 nm onto which data is encoded by the modulator. The aim of the present experimental investigation was to study the morphological and dimensional changes of bone, augmented at titanium implants by a membrane technique, taking place after membrane removal. In 12 rabbits, screw-shaped titanium implants were inserted in the tibial metaphyses in such a way that 5 threads became uncovered with bone. Surgery was performed on 2 occasions in order to retrieve specimens with different follow-up times. An e-PTFE barrier and a titanium device were used to provide space for bone formation. In 1 tibia of each rabbit, the membranes and spacers were removed after 8 weeks of healing, and the implants followed for 16 more weeks. Impressions were taken at day 0 and after 8 and 24 weeks of healing and plaster models were produced. In the contralateral tibiae, implants were inserted either 16 or 8 weeks prior to sacrifice. Measurements were made on the plaster models in 3 dimensions at 35 points around each implant in a coordinate measuring machine. Specimens taken 8, 16 and 24 weeks after insertion were analysed by means of light microscopical morphometry. The coordinate measurements showed that, in mean, 1.92 mm of bone had been formed during the first 8 weeks. A statistically significant loss of the height of the newly formed bone (0.70 mm) and thereby reduction of bone volume was found 24 weeks postoperatively. The volume decrease of the newly formed bone was more pronounced beside the implants than over the implant body. The histology showed that woven bone had been formed at the implants after 8 weeks. Further bone formation and remodelling and a net increase of mineralized bone were seen. The degree of bone-implant contact and bone area in the threads increased with time. The present study showed that coordinate measurements on plaster models, obtained from the experimental areas, in combination with histology, form a useful technique to study long-term changes of augmented bone. It was found that bone formed by a barrier membrane technique, decreased in volume during a 16-week follow-up period after barrier removal. Less dimensional changes were observed for the bone formed over the implant body, indicating that a solid surface may have a stabilizing effect on the augmented bone.  相似文献
