Properties of Carbopol Solutions as Models for Yield-Stress Fluids

ABSTRACT: The effect of pH on the non-Newtonian viscosity (η)of aqueous Carbopol 940 solutions is presented with high resolution (pH increments about 0.4) between pH = 2.8 and 12.7. Aqueous NaOH was used to adjust pH of 1.48 wt % Carbopol solutions. A Contraves viscometer was used to measure steady-flow shear stress at known shear rate (γ) over the range γ= 8 to 195 s⁻¹. Yield stresses and shear-thinning η(γ) were observed. Data were fitted with a Herschel-Bulkley model, whose parameters (including yield stress) were expressed as functions of pH. Comparisons were made of η(γ) to the dynamic viscometric properties η'(ω) and η*(ω) for comparable ranges of γ and frequency (ω): A fairly close match was found between η and η* but η«η'. pH dependence included previously unreported extrema of h(pH) in the range of pH = 6.2 to 6.6. Because of sensitive control of rheological properties with pH, Carbopol solutions can be used to mimic a great range of shear-thinning and yield-stress behavior that should make them useful for model studies directed toward process and equipment design and evaluation.     

Multiuser detection for DS-CDMA UWB in the home environment

We demonstrate the effectiveness of multiuser detection for an ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse based direct sequence spread spectrum system using code division multiple access. Extensive simulations were run using channel soundings of the 2-8 GHz band collected in a residential setting and characterized by a high level of multipath fragmentation. We show that the adaptive minimum mean square error (MMSE) multiuser detection (MUD) receivers are able to gather multipath energy and reject intersymbol and interchip interference for these channels to a much greater extent than RAKE receivers with 4 and 8 arms. We also demonstrate the adaptive MMSE is able to reject a narrowband IEEE 802.11a OFDM interferer, even for signal-to-interference ratio as severe as -30 dB. We show the adaptive MMSE exhibits only a 6 dB penalty relative to the single user case for the heavy multi-access interference (number of asynchronous users equal to spreading code length). The practical RAKE receivers were incapable of effectively rejecting either the strong narrowband interference or the heavily loaded wideband interference. Even more moderate levels of interference caused significant degradation in the performance of the practical RAKE receivers.     

Performance and modeling of advanced Ti:LiNbO3 digitaloptical switches

High-performance Y-branch digital optical switches realized in Ti:LiNbO₃ are presented. Their switching response functions have been optimized in terms of switch voltage and crosstalk ratio. The optimization is based on analyzing different types of waveguide shaping and switching arrangements using coupled mode theory and computer simulations. Excellent switching characteristics are achieved with devices exploiting a specially shaped waveguide branch in a dilated switch arrangement. Demonstrated performances include switching voltage as low as 9 V with crosstalk suppression better than 45 dB and fiber-to-fiber losses as low as 4 dB. Polarization independence with crosstalk suppression better than 40 dB over a 1520- to 1570-nm wavelength range is achieved for any applied switch voltage greater than 18 V. These optimized digital optical switches have further demonstrated the capability to reshape electrical input signals at switching rates of several hundred megahertz     

Beyond stabilizer codes II: Clifford codes

For pt. I see ibid., vol.48, no.8, p.2392-95 (2002). Knill (1996) introduced a generalization of stabilizer codes, called Clifford codes. It remained unclear whether or not Clifford codes can be superior to stabilizer codes. We show that Clifford codes are stabilizer codes provided that the abstract error group has an Abelian index group. In particular, if the errors are modeled by tensor products of Pauli matrices, then the associated Clifford codes are necessarily stabilizer codes.     

Portable system for data acquisition and transmission based on handheld PC technology

A portable system is developed to monitor physical activity by acquiring and storing data from body-mounted sensors; a handheld PC is used for managing data acquisition and storage, including radio-transmission to a remote host. An application related to the use of a gyro-accelerometric sensor for determining walking distance is discussed.     

A high-linearity 100-element diode grid mixer

Grid-mixer arrays can achieve high linearity and dynamic range through quasi-optical power combining. We present a 100-element single-ended diode grid mixer operating at 2.45 GHz. Each element incorporates two diodes in series. We measure an input third-order intercept of 11 W (40.5 dBm), and output third-order intercept of 3.4 W (35.4 dBm), and an associated conversion loss of 5.1 dB. The power-handling capability of the array is 100 times larger than that of a microstrip mixer using a single element. The local oscillator (LO) drive requirement for the entire array is 1.4 W (31.6 dBm). The angular dependence of the array's IF power is also presented and is in agreement with theory     

On the development of a direct method of determining the microcrack resistance curve

This report deals with direct observations of microcrack linkage at the crack tip prior to macroscopic crack initiation. It is shown that this process is directly linked to the inclusion distribution in the material and can be considered in terms of an R curve to describe microcrack development.
