The heart can be studied using ultrasound techniques. The shape of the heart, its chambers, wall thicknesses, wall tissue characteristics as well as motion of walls and valve leaflets are all diagnostic information. In addition, the blood velocity and its timing within the cardiac cycle is an important diagnostic tool. In the present paper focus will be limited to the analysis of the left ventricular function as observed with two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiography and the characteristics of backscattered ultrasound information from the left ventricular chamber wall. Function of the heart is often studied by observation of local wall motion or comparison of chamber volume in maximum and minimum shapes during the cardiac cycle (ejection fraction). Integrated backscatter from the wall is described in examples of cardiac transplantation and hypertrophy. Study of cyclic variation of frequency-dependent attenuation and integrated backscatter indicates that these are independent parameters. 相似文献

We measured turn-taking in terms of hand and head movements and asked if the global rhythm of the participants' body activity relates to word learning. Six dyads composed of parents and toddlers (M = 18 months) interacted in a tabletop task wearing motion-tracking sensors on their hands and head. Parents were instructed to teach the labels of 10 novel objects and the child was later tested on a name-comprehension task. Using dynamic time warping, we compared the motion data of all body-part pairs, within and between partners. For every dyad, we also computed an overall measure of the quality of the interaction, that takes into consideration the state of interaction when the parent uttered an object label and the overall smoothness of the turn-taking. The overall interaction quality measure was correlated with the total number of words learned.In particular, head movements were inversely related to other partner's hand movements, and the degree of bodily coupling of parent and toddler predicted the words that children learned during the interaction. The implications of joint body dynamics to understanding joint coordination of activity in a social interaction, its scaffolding effect on the child's learning and its use in the development of artificial systems are discussed. 相似文献

Phenol oxidation by Fenton's reagent (H2O2 + Fe2+) in aqueous solution has been studied in depth for the purpose of learning more about the reactions involved and the extent of the oxidation process, under various operating conditions. An initial phenol concentration of 100 mg/L was used as representative of a phenolic industrial wastewater. Working temperatures of 25 and 50 degrees C were tested, and the initial pH was set at 3. The H2O2 and the Fe2+ doses were varied in the range of 500-5000 and 1-100 mg/L, respectively, corresponding to 1-10 times the stoichiometric ratio. A series of intermediates were identified, corresponding mainly to ring compounds and short-chain organic acids. Most significant among the former were catechol, hydroquinone, and p-benzoquinone; the main organic acids were maleic, acetic, oxalic, and formic, with substantially lower amounts of muconic, fumaric, and malonic acids. Under milder operating conditions (H2O2 and Fe2+ at lower concentrations), a great difference was found between the measured total organic carbon (TOC) and the amount of carbon in all analyzed species in the reaction medium. This difference decreased as the doses of H2O2 and Fe2+ increased, indicating that the unidentified compounds must correspond to oxidation intermediates between phenol and the organic acids. To establish a complete oxidation pathway, experiments were carried out using each of the identified intermediates as starting compounds. Dihydroxybenzenes were identified in the earlier oxidation stages. Muconic acid was detected in catechol but not in the hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone oxidation runs; the last two compounds were oxidized to maleic acid. Oxalic and acetic acid appeared to be fairly refractory to this oxidation treatment. A detailed knowledge of the time evolution of the oxidation intermediates is of environmental interest particularly in the case of hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone because their toxicities are several orders of magnitudes higher than that of phenol itself. The time evolution of the intermediates and TOC was fitted to a simple second-order kinetic equation, and the values of the kinetic constants were determined. Anaerobic treatment of pre-settled cosmetic wastewater in batch and continuous experiments has been investigated. Biodegradability tests showed high COD and solid removal efficiencies (about 70%), being the hydrolysis of solids the limiting step of the process. Continuous treatment was carried out in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. High COD and TSS removal efficiencies (up to 95% and 85%, respectively) were achieved over a wide range of organic load rate (from 1.8 to 9.2g TCODL(-1)day(-1)). Methanogenesis inhibition was observed in batch assays, which can be predicted by means of a Haldane-based inhibition model. Chromium speciation is vital for the toxicity of products resulting from co-combustion of coal and biomass. Therefore, understanding of formation processes has been studied using a combination of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. The influence of cofiring on Cr speciation is very dependent on the type of fuel. Cr(VI) contents in the investigated fly ash samples from coal and cofiring average around 7% of the total chromium. An exception is cofiring 7-28% wood for which ashes exhibited Cr(VI) concentrations of 12-16% of the total chromium. Measurements are in line with thermodynamic predictions: RE factors of Cr around 1 are in line with volatile Cr only above 1400 °C; lower Cr(VI) concentrations with lower oxygen content and Cr(III) dissolved in aluminosilicate glass. Stability of Cr(VI) below 700 °C does not correlate with Cr(VI) concentrations found in the combustion products. It is indicated that Cr(VI) formation is a high-temperature process dependent on Cr evaporation (mode of occurrence in fuel, promoted by organic association), oxidation (local oxygen content), and formation of solid chromates (promoted by presence of free lime (CaO) in the ash). CaCrO(4)(s) is a probable chemical form but, given different leachable fractions (varying from 25 to 100%), different forms of Cr(VI) must be present. Clay-bound Cr is likely to dissolve in the aluminosilicate glass phase during melting of the clay. 相似文献
