We have investigated methods to increase the efficiency of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (pMUTs). pMUTs are driven by a thin piezoelectric layer on a Si membrane. The efficiency of pMUTs can be increased using a film with better ferroelectric properties. We have used Zn, Sr, and Y doping on PZT-based thin films along the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition to increase their piezoelectric properties. The results obtained were then extended to compositions on both sides of the MPB. The sol–gel method was used to prepare precursor solutions, which were then spin coated on a Pt(100)/Ti/SiO2 /Si substrate to prepare the PZT thin films. It was found that Zn and Sr together had the most significant effect on the ferroelectric properties in which a saturation polarization of 108 μC/cm2 and remanent polarization of 54 μC/cm2 were achieved. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis work examines the micrometer-scale wear behavior of pure Mg and its composites at various loads (100–500 mN) under single and multiple scratch conditions. The Mg-0.4Ce alloy reinforced with nanoparticles of zinc oxide (ZnO) and yttrium oxide (Y2O3) is investigated. The effect of reinforcement addition on wear characteristics and the coefficient of friction (COF) was evaluated. Moreover, the influence of number of scratches on wear quantification and wear mechanism was deduced at different loads. The results suggest that both the mechanical and tribological performance of ZnO-reinforced composite is significantly better than that of the Y2O3-reinforced composite, which can be attributed to a low COF and higher strengthening due to ZnO addition. 相似文献

In 1996, the Tab-Simco site, an abandoned coal mine 10 km southeast of Carbondale, Illinois, was listed as one of the most highly contaminated AMD sites in the mid-continent region. A suite of impacted soil and water samples were collected from various locations to characterize the current extent of AMD pollution, following standard U.S. EPA protocols. The mean pH of soil and water samples were found to be 2.69 and 2.07, respectively. The mean sulfur content of the soil samples was 0.5 %. The AMD-impacted soils contained high concentrations of Fe, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb, and As. The AMD also contained high concentrations of Fe, As, Zn, Pb, Cr, Al, Cd, Cu, and Ni, as well as \({\text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }\), all of which were significantly above their U.S. EPA permissible limits for surface water. 相似文献

The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analytical technique is invaluable for determining the crystallography of bulk alloys, thin films, and nanoparticles. However, our physical understanding of EBSD pattern generation is incomplete, which hinders our ability to push the limits of EBSD analysis. Here, by using an energy filter with better than 10 eV resolution, an improvement in the spatial resolution of the EBSD pattern was experimentally demonstrated. A signal depth of less than 15 nm for an aluminum film was achieved by controlling the cutoff energy of the energy filter. The chevron geometry in the SmC* phase of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLC) has been a major obstacle in the use of FLC in displays as it results in poor electro‐optical performance. The present paper reports a novel method to overcome this problem, by doping a small amount of polymer in the FLC matrix. In addition to the improvement in smectic ordering, polymer doping is also found to be useful in improving the vital electro‐optical properties. The various electro‐optical parameters like switching time, tilt angle, contrast ratio etc. show improvement in polymer mixed guest host mixture of FLC samples. POLYM. The interactive multiobjective genetic algorithm (IMOGA) is a promising new approach to calibrate models. The IMOGA combines traditional optimization with an interactive framework, thus allowing both quantitative calibration criteria as well as the subjective knowledge of experts to drive the search for model parameters. One of the major challenges in using such interactive systems is the burden they impose on the experts that interact with the system. This paper proposes the use of a novel image-based machine-learning (IBML) approach to reduce the number of user interactions required to identify promising calibration solutions involving spatially distributed parameter fields (e.g., hydraulic conductivity parameters in a groundwater model). The first step in the IBML approach involves selecting a few highly representative solutions for expert ranking. The selection is performed using unsupervised clustering approaches from the field of image processing, which group potential parameter fields based on their spatial similarities. The expert then ranks these representative solutions, after which a machine-learning model (augmented with the spatial information of the selected fields) is trained to learn user preferences and predict rankings for solutions not ranked by the expert. To better mimic the “visual” information processing of human experts, algorithms from the field of image processing are used to mine information about the spatial characteristics of parameter fields, thus improving the performance of the clustering and machine-learning algorithms. The IBML approach is tested and demonstrated on a groundwater calibration problem and is shown to lead to significant improvements, reducing the amount of user interaction by as much as half without compromising the solution quality of the IMOGA. 相似文献

The present study investigated regional modifications of glycosylation status, sperm association and functional significance of N- and O-linked glycoproteins in epididymal luminal fluid of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). The predominant glycoproteins of the epididymal luminal fluid that increase in the extent of glycosylation or unmasking of exposed epitopes in a region-specific, maturation-dependent manner, included those of 150, 116, 68, 64, 58 (N- and O-linked) and 170 kDa (O-linked). The higher expression of 40 (N-linked), 38 (N- and O-linked) and 60, 56 and 33 kDa (O-linked) glycoproteins in the proximal caput epididymal fluid was followed by alteration or reorganization of 60, 38 and 33 kDa (O-linked) glycoproteins in the distal segments of the epididymis. The association of epididymal fluid glycoproteins with maturing spermatozoa was identified by generating polyclonal antiserum against monkey caudal sperm membrane in female albino rabbits. The antiserum crossreacted strongly with 58 and 33 kDa epididymal fluid glycoproteins of monkeys and also reacted with 116, 68, 58, 56 and 33 kDa glycoproteins from Triton X-100 extracts of human spermatozoa, indicating the presence of antigenically related components in both species. The functional significance of epididymal fluid glycoproteins in sperm functions was investigated by raising antiserum against a heavily glycosylated 58 kDa glycoprotein (MEF1) of caudal epididymal fluid, which crossreacted with the Triton X-100 extracts of epididymal spermatozoa of monkey and ejaculated human spermatozoa on immunoblots. In an in vitro micro-sperm agglutination assay, anti-MEF1 serum agglutinated both rat caudal epididymal spermatozoa and human spermatozoa. MEF1 seemed to be involved in fertilization as demonstrated by inhibition of fertility (100%) in female albino rabbits and rats immunized with this protein. A sperm-agglutinating 58 kDa glycoprotein of rhesus monkey epididymis with functional significance in fertility was identified, thus indicating that it is a potential candidate for contraceptive vaccine development. 相似文献

Utilization of CO2 as a soft oxidant in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, a remarkable V2O5–Sb2O5–CeO2/TiO2–ZrO2 catalyst has been accomplished. Preparation of TiO2–ZrO2 support by co-precipitation followed by a single step deposition of V and Ce and Sb as stabilizers yielded a highly active and selective catalyst. Acid–base and redox properties including sustained stability of active species (V5+) are responsible for high activity of V2O5–Sb2O5–CeO2/TiO2–ZrO2 catalyst. The redox cycle is related to the dispersed V5+ and lattice reduced vanadium site in the VSbO4 phase. The antimony oxide inhibits the easy redox cycle between different vanadia species. 相似文献

Crosslinked guar gum‐g‐polyacrylate (cl‐GG‐g‐PA) superabsorbent hydrogels were prepared to explore their potential as soil conditioners and carriers. The hydrogels were prepared by in situ grafting polymerization and crosslinking of acrylamide onto a natural GG followed by hydrolysis. Microwave‐initiated synthesis under the chosen experimental conditions did not exhibit any significant improvement over the conventional technique. The optimization studies of various synthesis parameters, namely, monomer concentration, crosslinker concentration, initiator concentration, quantity of water per unit reaction mass, particle size of backbone, and concentration of alkali were performed. The hydrogels were characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and solid‐state 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. Swelling behavior of a candidate hydrogel [GG‐superabsorbent polymer (SAP)] in response to external stimuli, namely, salt solutions, fertilizer solutions, temperature, and pH, was studied. The GG‐SAP exhibited significant swelling in various environments. The effect of GG‐SAP on water absorption and the retention characteristics of sandy loam soil and soil‐less medium were also studied as a function of temperature and moisture tensions. The addition of GG‐SAP significantly improved the moisture characteristics of plant growth media (both soil and soil‐less), showing that it has tremendous potential for diverse applications in moisture stress agriculture. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
