Hurricane Katrina continues to capture attention and influence scholarship including official reports that focus more on event chronologies than on conceptual patterns. Our paper explores conceptual patterns crisis management behaviour, drawing upon Lalonde's (2004) archetypes of crisis managers as collectivists, integrators, and reactives. We add a paralytics archetype for our analysis. Key findings include an imbalance between counterproductive and constructive archetypes. Reactive and paralytic crisis manager behaviours were over‐represented, significantly contributing to conflict, communication failures, and the systemic failure of governments. Collectivist and integrator archetypes were badly under‐represented, limiting intergovernmental relations, cooperation, and communication embedded in these behaviour types. Crisis management performance with future crises would benefit from a systematic assessment of crisis management styles and behaviours.  相似文献

The high-temperature (1500?°C) interactions of two promising dense, polycrystalline EBC ceramics, YAlO3 (YAP) and γ-Y2Si2O7, with a calcia-magnesia-aluminosilicate (CMAS) glass have been explored as part of a model study. Despite the fact that the optical basicities of both the EBC ceramics and the CMAS are similar, they both react with the CMAS. In the case of the Si-free YAlO3, the reaction zone is small and it comprises three regions of reaction-crystallization products, including Y-Ca-Si apatite solid-solution (ss) and Y3Al5O12 (YAG)(ss). In contrast, only Y-Ca-Si apatite(ss) forms in the case of Si-containing γ-Y2Si2O7, and the reaction zone is an order-of-magnitude thicker. These CMAS interactions are analyzed in detail, and are found to be strikingly different than those observed in Y-free EBC ceramics (β-Yb2Si2O7 and β-Sc2Si2O7) in the accompanying Part II paper. This is attributed to the presence of the Y in the YAlO3 and γ-Y2Si2O7 EBC ceramics.  相似文献

Understanding the links between aerosol and cloud and radiative properties remains a large uncertainty in predicting Earth's changing energy budget. Surfactants are observed in ambient atmospheric aerosol particles, and their effect on cloud droplet growth is a mechanism that was, until recently, neglected in model calculations of particle activation and droplet growth. In this study, coarse mode aqueous aerosol particles were created containing the surfactant Igepal CA-630 and NaCl. The evaporation and condensation of these individual aqueous particles were investigated using an aerosol optical trap combined with Raman spectroscopy. For a relative humidity (RH) change from 70% to 80%, droplets containing both Igepal and NaCl at atmospheric concentrations exhibited on average more than 4% larger changes in droplet radii, compared to droplets containing NaCl only. This indicates enhanced water uptake in the presence of surfactants, but this result is unexpected based on the standard calculation of the effect of surfactants, using surface tension reduction and/or hygroscopicity changes, for particles of this size. One implication of these results is that in periods with increasing RH, surfactant-containing aqueous particles may grow larger than similarly sized aqueous NaCl particles without surfactants, thus shifting atmospheric particle size distributions, influencing particle growth, and affecting aerosol loading, visibility, and radiative forcing.

While the infection rate after primary total joint replacements (TJR) sits at 1–2%, for trauma-related surgery, it can be as high as 3.6 to 21.2% based on the type of trauma; the risk of reinfection after revision surgery is even higher. Current treatments with antibiotic-releasing PMMA-based bone cement/ beads and/or systemic antibiotic after surgical debridement do not provide effective treatment due to fluctuating antibiotic levels at the site of infection, leading to insufficient local antibiotic concentration. In addition, non-biodegradable PMMA does not support bone regrowth in the debrided void spaces and often must be removed in an additional surgery. Here, we report a bioactive glass or bioglass (BG) substrate-based biodegradable, easy to fabricate “press fitting” antibiotic-releasing bone void filling (ABVF-BG) putty to provide effective local antibiotic release at the site of infection along with support for bone regeneration. The ABVF-BG putty formulation had homogenously distributed BG particles, a porous structure, and showed putty-like ease of handling. Furthermore, the ABVF-BG putty demonstrated in vitro antibacterial activity for up to 6 weeks. Finally, the ABVF-BG putty was biodegradable in vivo and showed 100% bacterial eradication (as shown by bacterial cell counts) in the treatment group, which received ABVF-BG putty, compared to the infection control group, where all the rats had a high bacterial load (4.63 × 106 ± 7.9 × 105 CFU/gram bone) and sustained osteomyelitis. The ABVF-BG putty also supported bone growth in the void space as indicated by a combination of histology, µCT, and X-ray imaging. The potential for simultaneous infection treatment and bone healing using the developed BG-based ABVF-BG putty is promising as an alternative treatment option for osteomyelitis.  相似文献

Proteins containing intrinsic disorder often form secondary structure upon interaction with a binding partner. Modulating such structures presents an approach for manipulating the resultant functional outcomes. Translational repressor protein 4E-BP1 is an example of an intrinsically disordered protein that forms an α-helix upon binding to its protein ligand, eIF4E. Current biophysical methods for analyzing binding-induced structural changes are low-throughput, require large amounts of sample, or are extremely sensitive to signal interference by the ligand itself. Herein, we describe the discovery and development of a conditionally fluorescent 4E-BP1 peptide that reports structural changes of its helix in high-throughput format. This reporter peptide is based on conditional quenching of fluorescein by thioamides. In this case, fluorescence signal increases as the peptide becomes more ordered. Conversely, destabilization of the α-helix results in decreased fluorescence signal. The low concentration and low volume of peptide required make this approach amenable for high-throughput screening to discover ligands that alter peptide secondary structure.  相似文献

The silicone elastomer latex formulated with polyethylene glycol and colloidal silica produced a controlled release film coating on potassium chloride tablets. The release rate of potassium chloride was controlled by the total amount of polyethylene glycol and the weight fraction of polyethylene glycol 8000 and 1450 incorporated in the coating. A mathematical model was developed to quantitate the effect of coating components on the drug release rate using the statistical extreme vertices design. The predictive capability of this functional relationship was tested and validated experimentally.  相似文献
