The behaviour of freshly generated electrode surfaces of Ni, Ni-30Cu, Ni-50Cu and Ni-70Cu in 1.0 M H2SO4 has been investigated. At low potentials all metals grow a monolayer of film designated as MOH when M is Cu+ or Ni+. The kinetics of formation of this monolayer follows Tafel's equation. At higher potentials passivation of the metals occurs by film growth under high electric field, with two different sets of high field parameters for different film thicknesses. The rate of film growth for all metals is controlled largely by the nickel oxide component of the film. 相似文献

Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) has been shown to be efficiently nucleated by exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP). The nucleating effect of xGnP was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Nonisothermal crystallization of PHB from the melt required lower activation energies for PHB containing 1 wt % and 3 wt % xGnP (?214 and ?102 kJ/mol respectively) than for pure PHB (?60 kJ/mol). A kinetic study of the PHB/xGnP crystallization employing a modified form of the Avrami equation revealed that the presence of xGnP increased the PHB crystallization temperature, as well as the crystallization rates, and generated smaller and more numerous spherulites. Optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed the incorporation of xGnP into the lamellar structure of the PHB spherulites and provided insight into the influence of xGnP on spherulite size and lamellae thickness. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface mechanical and tribological properties of a copolymer based on benzoyl-1,4-phenylene and 1,3-phenylene were evaluated using nanoprobe investigation techniques and compared to the properties obtained at the macroscale. These copolymers are commonly referred to as self-reinforced polymers (SRPs) because of their intrinsic high strength and modulus without addition of a reinforcing agent. Specimens were prepared by spin casting, solvent casting, and compression molding. Surface mechanical properties and film thickness were measured by nanoindentation and scratching techniques. Friction properties were found using lateral force microscopy (LFM), and surface topography was imaged by tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). Macroscale friction testing revealed a kinetic coefficient of friction of 0.08 for SRP, approaching that of Teflon. Similarly low relative friction coefficients were obtained in nanoprobe measurements. Nanoindentation of SRP, polycarbonate (PC), and polyetherimide (PEI) demonstrated superior surface hardness and modulus of SRP copolymer thin films. 相似文献

The effects of the glass‐bead content and size on the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP)/glass‐bead blends were studied with differential scanning calorimetry. The degree of crystallinity decreased with the addition of glass bead, and the crystallization temperature of the blends was marginally higher than that of pure PP at various cooling rates. Furthermore, the half‐time for crystallization decreased with an increase in the glass‐bead content or particle size, implying the nucleating role of the glass beads. The nonisothermal crystallization data were analyzed with the methods of Avrami, Ozawa, and Mo. The validity of various kinetic models for the nonisothermal crystallization process of PP/glass‐bead blends was examined. The approach developed by Mo successfully described the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PP and PP/glass‐bead blends. Finally, the activation energy for the nonisothermal crystallization of pure PP and PP/glass‐bead blends based on the Kissinger method was evaluated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The procedure for the classical chemical refining of vegetable oils consists of degumming, alkali neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization. Conventional refining of rice bran oil using alkali gives oil of acceptable quality, but the refining losses are very high. A critical work has been carried out to study the application of membrane technology in the pretreatment of crude rice bran oil. Oils intended for physical refining should have a low phosphorus content, and this is not readily achievable by the conventional acid/water degumming process. The application of membrane technology for the pretreatment of rice bran oil has been investigated. The process has already been successfully applied to other vegetable oils. Ceramic membranes, which are important from the commercial point of view, were examined for this purpose. The results showed that the membrane‐filtered oils met the requirements of physical refining, with a substantial reduction in color. It was observed that most of the waxy material was also rejected. Experiments were carried out to establish the relationship between permeate flux and rejection with membrane pore size, trans‐membrane pressure and micellar solute concentration. 相似文献

The alkylation of benzene with isopropyl alcohol was studied in an integral pressure reactor over silicon substituted aluminophosphate molecular sieves, SAPO-5. The influence of various process parameters such as temperature, pressure, time on stream, weight hourly space velocity, and mole ratio of reactants on cumene yield and selectivity were investigated. The activity of SAPO-5 was compared with that of Hbeta for this reaction under similar conditions and in the same reactor. At pressures higher than atmospheric, almost the theoretical maximum yields of cumene were achieved on this SAPO-5. Among the diisopropyl benzenes formed by the alkylation of cumene, the meta-isomer was found to form in a significant amount followed by the para-isomer. The ortho-isomer with relatively high strain energy of 4.26 kcal/mol was almost negligible. The cumene yield goes through a maximum in the temperature range 498-543 K studied. Cumene selectivity was found to decrease at higher temperatures, higher pressures and lower benzene to isopropanol mole ratios. 相似文献

Mechanical and Morphological properties of polyamide-6/ABS blend systems, compatibilized by styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer, have been studied. The strength, modulus, and impact properties improved upon the addition of SMA. Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a commercially successful thermoplastic polyester but has certain drawbacks such as low impact strength and low melt strength. An attempt has been made to modify the properties of PBT by blending it with polyolefin such as highdensity polyethylene (HDPE). Since PBT and HDPE are incompatible, an ionomer has been used as a compatibilizer to form an alloy. Alloys of PBT and HDPE with varying amounts (2-8%) of ionomer were prepared by melt blending. The ultimate mechanical properties improved significantly on the addition of the ionomer due to an increase in interfacial adhesion between PBT and HDPE. DSC studies show that the presence of ionomer facilitated the crystallization of PBT in the alloy. DMTA studies show that more of PBT (amorphous) is going in to the HDPE-rich phase in the presence of ionomer. The morphology of the alloys was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), polarizing microscopy (PM), and small-angle light scattering (SALS). They showed improved dispersion of HDPE domains in PBT matrix with increasing ionomer content and change in the type of superstructure on adding the ionomer. It has been shown that an alloy of PBT and HDPE with improved mechanical properties and homogeneous morphology can be made with use of ionomer as a compatibilizer. Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto acetylated chemically modified jute was carried out in the temperature range 40–60°C using V5+-cyclohexanone redox initiator system. The effects of temperature, time, concentrations of metal ion (V5+), monomer (AN), cyclohexanone, some inorganic salts, and organic solvents on percent grafting have been studied. IR spectra of acetylated chemically modified jute and grafted jute have been taken, and their characteristic bands have been identified. Grafting has improved the thermal stability and also the lightfastness rating of jute fibers dyed with basic dyes. 相似文献
