An investigation of the wettability of the intermetallic compound NiAl by a liquid Ni–4.5 wt% Si–3.2 wt% B filler metal is presented in this paper. Dynamic observations of spreading of Ni–Si–B droplets, conducted using hot-stage light microscopy, are correlated with post-cooling microscopy and analysis. The paper examines the influence of the oxide layer on the NiAl substrates, on the progression of spreading of the Ni–Si–B liquid. Termination of spreading of the Ni–Si–B droplets by the onset of isothermal solidification at the spreading front is considered. Spreading of the Ni–Si–B droplets was found to be rapid until the onset of isothermal solidification at the spreading front. However, once isothermal solidification commenced, negligible further spreading was observed. The Ni–Si–B filler metal was observed to spread by undermining of the substrate oxide. However, a marked reaction occurred between the substrate oxide and the Ni–Si–B filler metal. This reaction served to remove the substrate oxide layer. The paper contrasts the mechanisms of substrate oxide undermining and isothermal solidification of liquid Ni–Si–B droplets on NiAl with those occurring during the spreading of the same liquid on pure nickel and Ni–Cr alloys. Bioanalytical THz sensing techniques have proven to be an interesting and viable tool for the label-free detection and analysis of biomolecules. However, a major challenge for THz bioanalytics is to perform investigations in the native aqueous environments of the analytes. This review recapitulates the status and future requirements for establishing THz biosensing as a complementary toolbox in the repertoire of standard bioanalytic methods. The potential use in medical research and clinical diagnosis is discussed. Under these considerations, this article presents a comprehensive categorization of biochemically relevant analytes that have been investigated by THz sensing techniques in aqueous media. The detectable concentration levels of ions, carbohydrates, (poly-)nucleotides, active agents, proteins and different biomacromolecules from THz experiments are compared to characteristic physiological concentrations and lower detection limits of state-of-the-art bioanalytical methods. Finally, recent experimental developments and achievements are discussed, which potentially pave the way for THz analysis of biomolecules under clinically relevant conditions.

The optical properties of 3D metacrystals made of gold nanoparticles in protein nanocages are studied. These metacrystals have sizes of tens of micrometers and are of high structural and optical quality. Through microspectroscopy measurements and model calculations it is demonstrated that the metacrystals show plasmonic absorption in the green wavelength range and are largely transparent in the red and infrared ranges. By using empty nanocages as placeholders in the metacrystal lattice, it is possible to control how strongly the metamaterial absorbs. Measurements on a pyramidal metacrystal show that it deflects visible light. The deflection shows evidence for anomalous refraction at short wavelengths and normal refraction at long wavelengths. The refractive dispersion is ascribed to the optical dispersion relation of the plasmonic metamaterial.  相似文献

The Adaptive Solar Facade (ASF) is a modular, highly integrated dynamic building facade.The energetic behavior as well as the architectural expression of the facade can be controlled with high spatio-temporal resolution through individually addressable modules. We present the general design process, the current mechanical design, and simulation results on photovoltaic power production and building energy consumption. We introduce the controller concept and show results on solar tracking as well as user interaction. Lastly, we present our current and planned prototypes.  相似文献

We present a new epoxy-based negative-tone dry film photoresist (DFR) for fabricating multilayer microfluidic devices using a lamination process combined with a standard photolithography technology. As proof-of-concept, a complex 3D-hydrodynamic focusing device was produced via a six-layer lamination process of 33 µm-thick DFR layers. The bonding strength of the new DFR was tested on silicon, glass, and titanium substrates, respectively. A maximum bonding strength of 37 MPa was obtained for the dry film photoresist laminated on glass. No leakage was found, and burst tests proved excellent robustness and sealing reliability of the microchannels.  相似文献

Organic semiconductors are the centerpiece of several vibrant research fields from single‐molecule to organic electronics, and they are finding increasing use in bioelectronics and even classical polymer technology. The versatile chemistry and broad range of electronic functionalities of conjugated materials enable the bridging of length scales 15 orders of magnitude apart, ranging from a single nanometer (10?9 m) to the size of continents (106 m). This work provides a taste of the diverse applications that can be realized with organic semiconductors. The reader will embark on a journey from single molecular junctions to thin film organic electronics, supramolecular assemblies, biomaterials such as amyloid fibrils and nanofibrillated cellulose, conducting fibers and yarns for e‐textiles, and finally to power cables that shuffle power across thousands of kilometers.  相似文献

Real-time nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) is an isothermal method specifically designed for amplification of RNA. Fluorescent molecular beacon probes enable real-time monitoring of the amplification process. Successful identification, utilizing the real-time NASBA technology, was performed on a microchip with oligonucleotides at a concentration of 1.0 and 0.1 microM, in 10- and 50-nL reaction chambers, respectively. The microchip was developed in a silicon-glass structure. An instrument providing thermal control and an optical detection system was built for amplification readout. Experimental results demonstrate distinct amplification processes. Miniaturized real-time NASBA in microchips makes high-throughput diagnostics of bacteria, viruses, and cancer markers possible, at reduced cost and without contamination.  相似文献

Proposed modifications of the standard sludge volume index (SVI) to eliminate its unpredictable variation with suspended solids (SS) concentration include stirring, conduct of the test at constant SS concentration, and dilution. We have tested these modifications by making correlations between the respective indices and the content of filamentous organisms in activated sludge expressed in terms of total extended filament length. The results indicate that diluted SVI is the best index of sludge settleability among those tested. Correlation of diluted SVI with specific functional relationships between settling velocity and SS concentration would enable the application of this parameter to prediction of thickening capacity in secondary clarifiers.  相似文献
