Properties of WN x /GaAs Schottky contacts prepared by ion implantation of nitrogen

The formation of WN _x /GaAs Schottky contacts using selective ion implantation of nitrogen into the sputtered tungsten film has been demonstrated. The contacts were characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy and current-voltage measurements. The composition of WN _x films and the thermal stability of WN _x /GaAs contacts were investigated. Good thermal stability of WN _x /GaAs contacts compared with a W/GaAs contact was observed after capless rapid thermal annealing at 450, 800 and 950°C for 10 s.     

Deciding bisimilarity is<Emphasis Type="Italic">P</Emphasis>-complete

In finite labelled transition systems the problems of deciding strong bisimilarity, observation equivalence and observation congruence areP-complete under many—oneNC-reducibility. As a consequence, algorithms for automated analysis of finite state systems based on bisimulation seem to be inherently sequential in the following sense: the design of anNC algorithm to solve any of these problems will require an algorithmic breakthrough, which is exceedingly hard to achieve.     

Effect of breed-type on the relationships between intramuscular and total body fat in steers

The partitioning of total dissectible body fat and the amounts of intramuscular fat in Psoas major, Semitendinosus and Biceps brachii muscles were determined in two groups of A. Angus and AA × Nelore steers with similar averages of total dissectible fat (27·7 kg). In addition, the fatty acid composition of total fat and the triglyceride fraction from dissectible and intramuscular fats were determined.

The AA × Nelore steers have higher levels of subcutaneous fat and lower levels of intermuscular fat than the A. Angus but contain lower levels of intramuscular fat in the three muscles. The allometric regressions varied according to the muscle and breed type. The fatty acid composition of subcutaneous and kidney fats were similar but differences in the percentages of 14:0, 18:0, 18:2 and 20:4 fatty acids in intramuscular fats between the two genetic groups were detected.     

A comparison of distribution and composition of intramuscular fat in Duroc Jersey and Hampshire pigs at 100 kg liveweight

The intramuscular fat content, its fatty acid composition and that from the triglyceride fraction, were determined in several muscles from the right sides of four Duroc Jersey and four Hampshire castrated male pigs slaughtered at 100 kg liveweight. The Hampshires had heavier muscles than the Duroc Jersey pigs, but did not show significant differences in the percentages of intramuscular fat. The concentrations of linoleic acid were, in general, higher in the Hampshire than in the Duroc Jersey pigs and in many muscles the differences were highly significant (p < 0·05) The concentrations of linoleic acid (18:2) in the triglyceride fraction did not differ among muscles within breeds but were higher in Hampshire than in Duroc Jersey pigs.     

Ortho-para conversion in hydrogen bubbles in copper

The low-temperature heat release in copper due to ortho-para conversion in hydrogen bubbles is investigated. Deviations from a model of free solid hydrogen are observed: a more intense heat release atT10 K and a rapid (10 h) heat release after cooling to 1.3 K. The experimental results can be explained by the assumption of autocatalytic conversion in the bulk and the catalytic influence of the bubble surface.     

A study of behavioural groupings of polyphenolic species in "fino" sherry wine. Evolution during vinification and mechanical treatment of the grape

The different groups and/or classes among phenolic acids and aldehydes identified during the elaboration process of "fino" sherry wine have been studied. The study was carried out using different processes during the elaboration of the wine and we have attempted to establish whether the different treatments of the grape affect these groupings. The study was undertaken by means of cluster and multifactorial analysis on the data obtained by the quantitative determination of phenolic acids and aldehydes during vinification and in experiments carried out on the grape under different mechanical treatments. The analysis of phenolic acids and aldehydes was done with HPLC, using a C-18 mu-Bondapak and a stepwise composite gradient. The samples were previously extracted with ethylic ether.     

DC and ac Josephson effects observed in high-temperature superconductor YBaCuO

We report the observation of the dc and ac Josephson effect and quasiparticle tunnelling in the high-temperature superconductor YBaCuO. The observation is made at 4.2 K. These effects were observed in a junction made by a niobium tip pressed against a high-T _c sample of YBaCuO ceramic. We observed a clean dc Josephson effect with a critical currentI _c 2 A and the ac effect with Shapiro steps corresponding toV=(hf/2e)n. The nature of the junction is not clear; however, we suggest that all observed effects can be explained by assuming a singlet pairing state in the ceramic. We have also observed a very peculiar noise behavior along theV-I characteristic.     

An algorithm for solving sparse Nonlinear Least Squares problems

We introduce a new method for solving Nonlinear Least Squares problems when the Jacobian matrix of the system is large and sparse. The main features of the new method are the following:

1. The Gauss-Newton equation is “partially” solved at each iteration using a preconditioned Conjugate Gradient algorithm.
2. The new point is obtained using a two-dimensional trust region scheme, similar to the one introduced by Bulteau and Vial.

We prove global and local convergence results and we present some numerical experiments.
