There is recognition that both stress and immune responses are important factors in a variety of neurological disorders. Moreover, there is an important role of several neurotransmitters that connect these factors to several neurological diseases, with a special focus in this paper on serotonin. Accordingly, it is known that imbalances in stressors can promote a variety of neuropsychiatric or neurodegenerative pathologies. Here, we discuss some facts that link major depressive disorder, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s to the stress and immune responses, as well as the connection between these responses and serotonergic signaling. These are important topics of investigation which may lead to new or better treatments, improving the life quality of patients that suffer from these conditions.  相似文献

The highly enantioselective organo‐co‐catalytic aza‐Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH)‐type reaction between N‐carbamate‐protected imines and α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. The organic co‐catalytic system of proline and 1,4‐diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) enables the asymmetric synthesis of the corresponding N‐Boc‐ and N‐Cbz‐protected β‐amino‐α‐alkylidene‐aldehydes in good to high yields and up to 99% ee. In the case of aza‐MBH‐type addition of enals to phenylprop‐2‐ene‐1‐imines, the co‐catalytic reaction exhibits excellent 1,2‐selectivity. The organo‐co‐catalytic aza‐MBH‐type reaction can also be performed by the direct highly enantioselective addition of α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes to bench‐stable N‐carbamate‐protected α‐amidosulfones to give the corresponding β‐amino‐α‐alkylidene‐aldehydes with up to 99% ee. The organo‐co‐catalytic aza‐MBH‐type reaction is also an expeditious entry to nearly enantiomerically pure β‐amino‐α‐alkylidene‐amino acids and β‐amino‐α‐alkylidene‐lactams (99% ee). The mechanism and stereochemistry of the chiral amine and DABCO co‐catalyzed aza‐MBH‐type reaction are also discussed.  相似文献

We present a novel method for extracting and classifying motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) from one-channel electromyographic recordings. The extraction of MUAP templates is carried out using a symbolic representation of waveforms, a common technique in signature verification applications. The assignment of MUAPs to their specific trains is achieved by means of repeated template matching passes using pseudocorrelation, a new matched-filter-based similarity measure. Identified MUAPs are peeled off and the residual signal is analyzed using shortened templates to facilitate the resolution of superimpositions. The program was tested with simulated data and with experimental signals obtained using fine-wire electrodes in the biceps brachii during isometric contractions ranging from 5% to 30% of the maximum voluntary contraction. Analyzed signals were made of up to 14 MUAP trains. Most templates were extracted automatically, but complex signals sometimes required the adjustment of 2 parameters to account for all the MUAP trains present. Classification accuracy rates for simulations ranged from an average of 96.3% +/- 0.9% (4 trains) to 75.6% +/- 11.0% (12 trains). The classification portion of the program never required user intervention. Decomposition of most 10-s-long signals required less than 10 s using a conventional desktop computer, thus showing capabilities for real-time applications.  相似文献

Several studies have suggested an increased prevalence of osteopenia in dialysis. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is a new technique that allows the noninvasive evaluation of trabecular and cortical bone separately. The aim of the study was: (1) to evaluate cortical bone by pQCT in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients and compare the data with that obtained in healthy controls; and (2) to correlate cortical bone parameters with bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and femoral neck and total bone mineral content (TBMC). Cortical bone parameters were obtained in 22 CAPD patients and 27 healthy individuals at the distal radius using a Stratec XCT 960 pQCT machine. In the dialysis patients, we also determined BMD and TBMC by bone densitometry. Dialysis patients, compared with controls, showed a significant reduction in volumetric cortical BMD (VcBMD) (p = 0.04) and cortical thickness (cThk) (p < 0.0001) with a significant increase in radial total cross-sectional area (TA) (p = 0.006), endosteal circumference (p < 0.0001), and buckling ratio (p < 0.0001). In CAPD patients, total time on dialysis correlated negatively with radial total BMD (p < 0.01) and VcBMD (p < 0.01). Age correlated positively with TA (p < 0.01), endosteal (p < 0.01), and periosteal circumferences (p < 0.01). Serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels correlated positively with endosteal (p = 0.04) and periosteal perimeter (p = 0.01). Total alkaline phosphatase correlated negatively with VcBMD (p < 0.01), and positively with endosteal perimeter (p = 0.02). Total bone mineral content correlated significantly with radial cortical content (p < 0.001), cross-sectional cortical area (cA; p < 0.001), and cThk (p < 0.01) but not with total radial BMD, VcBMD, or buckling ratio. No correlations were found between radial cortical parameters and BMD measured at the lumbar spine or femoral neck. We conclude that dialysis patients show cortical osteopenia with marked cortical thinning partially mediated by PTH action on bone. Total bone mineral content correlated with various radial cortical parameters (content, area, and thickness) but not with others. No correlations were found between cortical bone parameters measured at the peripheral skeleton with areal bone density measured at the axial skeleton. These findings suggest that pQCT may be a new tool in the assessment of bone fragility in dialysis patients.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide reforming of methane to synthesis gas was studied over Ni/ZrO2–SiO2 catalyst under different pretreatment atmospheres. Characterization using powder X-ray diffraction, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, H2 temperature-programmed hydrogenation, TG/DTA, XPS, Raman spectra and transmission electron microscopy techniques revealed that gas atmospheres employed in the catalyst pretreatment have a significant influence on the catalytic performance. The helium-pretreated catalyst was found to be the most suitable catalyst for this application, showing the improved catalytic performance. More specifically, helium pretreatment facilitated the generation of well-distributed active metal sites while the heterogeneity of Ni components upon H2 pretreatment degraded catalytic activity of metal sites considerably. Pretreatment under CO atmosphere resulted in the formation of carbon encapsulated metal species thus causing catalyst deactivation severely. Inefficient reduction under CH4 activation and the presence of a great amount of carbonaceous species, disfavor the production of synthesis gas during the dry reforming.  相似文献

The effects of wood species on mechanical, thermal and accelerated weathering behaviors of high-density polyethylene based wood plastic composites (WPC) were investigated. The selected wood species are poplar, Douglas-fir, black locust, white oak, and ponderosa pine. Hybrid poplar and Douglas-fir based composite ranked highly in flexural properties. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that thermal stability of the WPC is species dependent. The final decomposition of hemicelluloses in the hardwoods occurred at higher temperatures compared to that of softwoods. Color and chemical changes that occurred due to accelerated weathering were monitored using colorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Weathered WPCs showed that color change and lightness increased with exposure time; degree of increase depends on wood species. WPC oxidation by weathering was assessed by carbonyl group concentration and was shown to increase with exposure. Hybrid poplar and ponderosa pine were shown to have good color stability among the wood species examined for WPC.  相似文献

The objective of the current research was to determine if pasteurization of nonsaleable waste milk influences fecal Salmonella concentrations and prevalence, or antimicrobial susceptibility and serotype of the cultured isolates. Holstein dairy calves (n = 211) were housed on a single commercial dairy in the southwestern United States and randomly allotted to be fed either pasteurized (PWM; n = 128 calves) or nonpasteurized waste milk (NPWM; n = 83 calves). Fecal samples were collected via rectal palpation or from freshly voided, undisturbed fecal pats, weekly during the first 4 wk of the animal's life and then again at weaning. Eight total collections were made and 1,117 fecal samples cultured for Salmonella. One isolate from each culture-positive fecal sample was preserved for antimicrobial susceptibility screening and serotyping. Sixty-nine percent of the fecal samples were culture positive for Salmonella with no difference due to treatment (67.7 and 69% Salmonella positive for PWM and NPWM treatments, respectively). Few fecal samples (178/1,117; 15.9%) contained Salmonella concentrations above the limit of detection (~1 cfu/g of feces) with concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 6.46 cfu (log10)/g of feces. Concentration was not affected by treatment. Seventeen different serotypes were identified, the majority of which were Montevideo and Anatum. A greater percentage of Typhimurium (87 vs. 13%), Muenchen (88 vs. 12%), and Derby (91 vs. 9%) were recovered from calves fed PWM compared with NPWM-fed calves. Conversely, Newport (12.5 vs. 86%), Bredeney (22.2 vs. 77.8%), and Muenster (12.5 vs. 87.5%) were lower in PWM compared with NPWM treatments. The majority (66.7%) of isolates were susceptible to all of the antibiotics examined. Results from this one commercial dairy suggest that milkborne Salmonella is not an important vector of transmission in dairy neonates, nor does pasteurization of waste milk influence fecal shedding of this pathogen. Caution should be used, however, when extrapolating results to other farms as Salmonella contamination of milk on farm is well documented. The potential benefits of pasteurization in disease prevention outweigh the potential risks of feeding a nonpasteurized product and warrants incorporation into any calf-rearing program using nonsaleable waste milk for feeding young dairy neonates.  相似文献

The alternative technologies discussed in this review are able to eliminate pathogenic bacteria while retaining bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, phenols, pigments, and vitamins, improve the extraction processes of fruit or vegetable juices. The use of nonthermal processing technologies in beverages might provide a higher quality value to the final product and consumers tended to prefer more natural products with minimum preservative substances. This review is analyze and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of alternative technologies applied in beverages, evaluating the parameters that can optimize beverage processing such as time, temperature, pressure, frequency, tension, among others. Additionally, finding solutions to beverage processing issues will be considered analyzing the results obtained with other applied methods, and an overview of new strategies such as microfiltration or the combination of two alternative technologies to improve the quality of the final product will also be evaluated.

Practical applications

The applications of alternative technologies mentioned in this article, are a feasible option for the preservation of beverages in the area of industry. The capacity of each of them has been demonstrated, in addition to the use of microfiltration and ultrafiltration, but the combination between them sounds very encouraging to achieve the quality and safety of beverages, with an extended shelf life and greater protection of its main components. This provides a wide range of research opportunities for any type of beverage.  相似文献
