99Tcm-MDP scintigraphy in high-voltage electrical burn patients

In high-voltage electrical burn injuries (> 1000 V), it is difficult to identify the site and extent of non-viable deep tissue damage for debridement to avoid further tissue injury from wound infection and the risk of sepsis. This prospective study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of 99Tcm-methylene di-phosphonate (99Tcm-MDP) scintigraphy in detecting the extent of tissue injury and determining the level of amputation required for electrical burn patients. Over a 5 year period, 33 high-voltage electrical burn patients were studied. Blood flow and blood pool studies revealed absent perfusion in 37 limbs, all of which eventually were amputated. In addition to a routine three-phase bone scan, images were obtained at 30-60 min (early images) to evaluate whether soft tissue injury could be detected better at that time. For comparison of the detection rate from the early images and bone (delayed) images, 164 corresponding spot views of both images were reviewed. Eighty-three and 125 tissue necrotic lesions were demonstrated by the early images and bone images respectively. All of the 83 lesions found by the early images were more clearly identified by the bone images. All but one of the 125 lesions underwent surgical debridement or amputation. We concluded that the blood flow and blood pool images correlated well with the level of amputation required. The site and extent of tissue necrotic lesions can be clearly identified on 99Tcm-MDP bone scans. Because the early images were less sensitive in detecting tissue necrosis, we suggest that early imaging is not necessary.     

Monolithic SiGe Up‐/Down‐Conversion Mixers with Active Baluns

The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of monolithically matching circuits, interface circuits, and RF core circuits to the same substrate. We designed and fabricated on‐chip 1 to 6 GHz up‐conversion and 1 to 8 GHz down‐conversion mixers using a 0.8 µm SiGe hetero‐junction bipolar transistor (HBT) process technology. To fabricate a SiGe HBT, we used a reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition (RPCVD) system to grow a base epitaxial layer, and we adopted local oxidation of silicon (LOCOS) isolation to separate the device terminals. An up‐conversion mixer was implemented on‐chip using an intermediate frequency (IF) matching circuit, local oscillator (LO)/radio frequency (RF) wideband matching circuits, LO/IF input balun circuits, and an RF output balun circuit. The measured results of the fabricated up‐conversion mixer show a positive power conversion gain from 1 to 6 GHz and a bandwidth of about 4.5 GHz. Also, the down‐conversion mixer was implemented on‐chip using LO/RF wideband matching circuits, LO/RF input balun circuits, and an IF output balun circuit. The measured results of the fabricated down‐conversion mixer show a positive power conversion gain from 1 to 8 GHz and a bandwidth of about 4.5 GHz.     

Maternal-fetal transmission of HIV

Rolipram inhibited U937 cell phosphodiesterase-4 in either the presence or absence of saturating (100 micrograms/ml) phosphatidic acid in an apparently phospholipid-independent manner, exhibiting similar kinetics (Ki values = 0.41 and 0.59 microM, respectively). At low concentrations (10 and 100 nM), however, rolipram caused a rightward shift of the phosphatidic acid concentration-response curve for phosphodiesterase-4 activation, suppressing activation by up to 70%. Maximum inhibition of phosphodiesterase-4 activation occurred at phosphatidic acid concentrations of 5-40 micrograms/ml. The results suggest that rolipram is capable of inhibiting phosphodiesterase-4 by both phospholipid-dependent and phospholipid-independent mechanisms.     

Interactions between normal and tumoral tissues at the boundary of human anterior pituitary adenomas. An immunohistochemical study

Previously, the species complex Oncomelania hupensis, individuals of which act as intermediate hosts for the human bloodfluke Schistosoma japonicum, has been characterised by morphological and isoenzyme criteria. We have examined genetic variation between and within three subspecies of Oncomelania hupensis, i.e. O. h. hupensis (China), O. h. quadrasi (Philippines) and O. h. nosophora (Japan), by direct means using a PCR-based RFLP method. The subspecies of O. hupensis were readily distinguished by their characteristic restriction patterns, supporting isoenzyme data which suggests these may warrant species-specific status. No genetic variation was observed between O. h. quadrasi from different islands within the Philippines. In contrast, geographical isolates of O. h. hupensis differed markedly by this method indicating several genetically distinct populations of O. h. hupensis occur in China.
