The use of diffusers around the horizontal-axis wind turbines has been widely studied since the diffuser improves the power coefficient of the turbine and it is often called DAWTs (diffuser augmented wind turbines).Turbines using diffuser are called DWATs (Diffuser Augmented Turbines),and have efficiency bigger than the Betz limit (maximum energy flow extracted = 59.26%). Thus, this study presents a mathematical model describing the behavior of the velocity profile internally to a diffuser according to the characteristics of flow and geometry of a conical diffuser. Increasing use of petroleum, coupled with concern for global warming, demands the development and institution of CO2 reducing, non-fossil fuel-based alternative energy-generating strategies. Ethanol is a potential alternative, particularly when produced in a sustainable way as is envisioned for sugarcane in Brazil. We consider the expansion of sugarcane-derived ethanol to displace 5% of projected gasoline use worldwide in 2025. With existing technology, 21 million hectares of land will be required to produce the necessary ethanol. This is less than 7% of current Brazilian agricultural land and equivalent to current soybean land use. New production lands come from pasture made available through improving pasture management in the cattle industry. With the continued introduction of new cane varieties (annual yield increases of about 1.6%) and new ethanol production technologies, namely the hydrolysis of bagasse to sugars for ethanol production and sugarcane trash collection providing renewable process energy production, this could reduce these modest land requirements by 29–38%. 相似文献

The extent of ischemic injury has been studied in the isolated working rat heart utilizing an aortic ball valve that reduces the coronary flow. A number of factors were tested including high heart rate, noradrenaline, acidosis, alkalosis, high afterload, beta-blockade, glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK), palmitate and methylprednisolone. Mechanical performance, myocardial contents of ATP, creatine phosphate, glycogen and lactate and the leakage of creatine phosphokinase (CK) from the myocardium to the perfusion buffer were measured and used for determination of the ischemic injury. Tachycardia, noradrenaline and palmitate are factors that markedly increase the ischemic injury in this preparation. GIK and probably metoprolol decrease the release of CK compared with the controls. 相似文献

A simple mathematical model to predict dehydration and impregnation process during osmotic dehydration of orange‐fleshed honeydew in sucrose and corn syrup solutions was proposed. Results showed low dispersion and a good fitting capability for WL and SG kinetics. Diffusivity values for WL ranged from 0.96 × 10?10 to 2.22 × 10?10 and 1.04 × 10?10 to 3.10 × 10?10 m2 s?1 in corn syrup and sucrose solutions, respectively. For SG, the obtained range was 0.72 × 10?10 to 2.35 × 10?10 and 0.71 × 10?10 to 2.46 × 10?10 m2 s?1 in corn syrup and sucrose solutions, respectively. The half‐life of dehydration rates (t1/2) was from 30.9 to 71.2 min and from 19.4 to 57.5 min in corn syrup and sucrose solutions, respectively. Diffusivities values obtained according to the proposed model were close to the ones observed from diffusive model; t1/2 was a promising criterion for the process time definition. 相似文献

Cell membranes are fundamental for cellular function as they protect the cell and control passage in and out of the cell. Despite their clear significance, cell membranes are often difficult to study, due to their complexity and the lack of available technologies to interface with them and transduce their functions. Overcoming this complexity by developing simple, reductionist models can facilitate their study. Indeed, lipid layers represent a simplified yet representative model for a cell membrane. Lipid layers are highly insulating, a property that is directly affected by changes in lipid packing or membrane fluidity. Such physical changes in the membrane models can be characterized by coupling them with an electronic transducer. Herein, a lipid monolayer that is stabilized between two immiscible solvents is integrated with an organic electrochemical transistor, which is capable of operating in a biphasic solvent mixture. The platform is used to evaluate how lidocaine, a widely used anesthetic the working mechanism of which is still a matter of debate, interacts with the cell membrane. The present study provides evidence that the anesthetic directly interacts with the lipids in the membrane, affecting their packing and therefore the monolayer permeability. The proposed platform provides an elegant solution for studying compound–membrane interactions. 相似文献

The intestinal epithelium is a principal site for environmental agents’ detection. Several inflammation- and stress-related signalling pathways have been identified as key players in these processes. However, it is still unclear how the chronic intake of inadequate nutrients triggers inflammatory signalling pathways in different intestinal regions. We aimed to evaluate the impact of unhealthy dietary patterns, starting at a younger age, and the association with metabolic dysfunction, intestinal inflammatory response, and obesity in adulthood. A rat model was used to evaluate the effects of the consumption of sugary beverages (HSD) and a Western diet (WD), composed of ultra-processed foods. Both diets showed a positive correlation with adiposity index, but a positive correlation was found between the HSD diet and the levels of blood glucose and triglycerides, whereas the WD diet correlated positively with triglyceride levels. Moreover, a distinct inflammatory response was associated with either the WD or HSD diets. The WD induced an increase in TLR2, TLR4, and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) intestinal gene expression, with higher levels in the colon and overexpression of the inducible nitric oxide synthase. In turn, the HSD diet induced activation of the TLR2-mediated NF-κB signalling pathway in the small intestine. Altogether, these findings support the concept that early intake of unhealthy foods and nutrients are a main exogenous signal for disturbances of intestinal immune mechanisms and in a region-specific manner, ultimately leading to obesity-related disorders in later life. 相似文献

Considering the high levels of materials used in the fields of electronics and energy storage systems, it is increasingly necessary to take into consideration environmental impact. Thus, it is important to develop devices based on environmentally friendlier materials and/or processes, such as additive manufacturing techniques. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) are prepared by direct-ink-writing (DIW) by varying solvent evaporation temperature and fill density percentage. Different morphologies for both polymers are obtained, including dense films and porous membranes, as well as different electroactive β-phase content, thermal and mechanical properties. The dielectric constant and piezoelectric d33 coefficient for dense films reaches up to 16 at 1 kHz and 4 pC N−1, respectively for PVDF-HFP with a fill density of 80 and a solvent evaporation temperature of 50 °C. Porous structures are developed for battery separator membranes in lithium-ion batteries, with a highest ionic conductivity value of 3.8 mS cm−1 for the PVDF-HFP sample prepared with a fill density of 100 and a solvent evaporation temperature of 25 °C, the sample showing an excellent cycling performance. We studied the effect of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) by a diode laser at 810 nm combined with episcleral ruthenium-106 plaque treatment (106Ru) on lens transparency in patients with choroidal melanoma. Lens transmission of blue-green light was measured by fluorophotometry in 17 patients treated with 106Ru treatment and TTT (measured 0.36 years after treatment), 12 patients treated with 106Ru alone (measured 19 years after treatment) and 25 age-matched healthy controls. Differences in lens transmission were not significant between treated and untreated fellow eyes (p > 0.15) nor between patient and control eyes (p > 0.25). TTT of choroidal melanoma combined with 106Ru plaque irradiation did not have a significant effect on the lens transparency up to 6 years after treatment. 相似文献

The CD56+ lymphomas are a recently characterized high-grade malignancy of putative natural killer cell origin. They are mostly localized to the nasal areas but show a propensity to spread to or recur in the skin. We describe a unique case of CD56+ natural killer lymphoma that recurred in scrotal skin in a patient 8 years after an initial limited resection. Although this case was unusual in showing a prolonged period of apparent remission, it illustrated a characteristic clinicopathologic behavior of this rare tumor. 相似文献
