The plastic-crystalline phase of succinonitrile as a universal matrix for solid-state ionic conductors

Solid ionic conductors are actively sought for their potential application in electrochemical devices, particularly lithium batteries. We have found high ionic conductivity for a large variety of salts dissolved in the highly polar medium based on the plastic-crystal form of succinonitrile (N[triple bond]C[bond]CH(2)[bond]CH(2)[bond]C[triple bond]N). Its high diffusivity, plasticity and solvating power allowed the preparation of a large number of materials with high ionic conductivity, reaching values of 3 mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C (two orders of magnitude above polymers). Their ease of preparation and processing allowed us to study the influence of the solute on ionic conduction within this medium. Comparisons revealed a dichotomy between plastic crystals and conventional polymer media. The usefulness of these new, easily processed electrolytes was asserted in electrochemical tests with lithium intercalation electrodes.     

Synthesis of artificial neural networks by transconductors only

Hardware implementation of artificial neural networks has been attracting great attention recently. In this work, the analog VLSI implementation of artificial neural networks by using only transconductors is presented. The signal flow graph approach is used in synthesis. The neural flow graph is defined. Synthesis of various neural network configurations by means of neural flow graph is described. The approach presented in this work is technology independent. This approach can be applied to new neural network topologies to be proposed or used with transconductors designed in future technologies.     

Numerical optimization of hole making in GFRP composite using abrasive water jet machining process

Machining of composite materials for the production of bolt holes is essential in the assembly of the structural frames in many industrial applications of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP). Abrasive water jet cutting technology has been used in industry for such purposes. This technology has procured many overlapping applications and as the life of the joint in the assembled structure can be critically affected by the quality of the holes, so it is important for the industry to understand the application of the abrasive water jet cutting process on GFRP composite materials. The aim of the present work is to assess the influence of abrasive water jet machining parameters on the hole making process of woven-laminated GFRP material and to find the optimum values of the process parameters. Statistical approach was used to understand the effects of the predicted variables on the response variables. Analysis of variance was performed to isolate the effects of the parameters affecting the hole making in abrasive water jet cutting. The results show that the optimum values of cutting feed, fiber density, water jet pressure, standoff distance, and abrasive flow rate upon the response variables are 0.3 m/min, 0.82 g/cm³, 150 MPa, 2 mm, and 100 g/min, respectively.     

Introducing a novel integrated NGL recovery process configuration (with a self-refrigeration system (open–closed cycle)) with minimum energy requirement

In this study a novel process configuration for recovery of hydrocarbon liquids from natural gas is proposed. The required refrigeration in this configuration is obtained by a self-refrigeration system (open–closed cycle). High performance of the multi-stream heat exchangers, high recovery levels of the hydrocarbon liquids and low required compression power (in the internal refrigeration section) are three of most important characteristic of the proposed configuration. The effects of the mixed self-refrigerant flow rate and pressure on the performance of the process are discussed. Various values for feed composition are tested and the results show that the process can work efficiently with different feeds. In order to analyze the need of external refrigeration by a close or open cycle that is related to the composition of the inlet gas, a configuration with external refrigeration is designed the manner that it is similar with the purposed configuration in the separation section.     

Investigation of the catalytic activity of LaBO3 (B = Ni, Co, Fe or Mn) prepared by the microwave-assisted method for hydrogen evolution in acidic medium

LaBO₃ (B = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn) were prepared by microwave-assisted citrate method. The electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was investigated. XRD characterization showed that pure perovskite crystals were indeed formed. SEM images showed that changing the type of the B-site metal ion affected the morphology of the prepared perovskites. The influence of the type of B-cation on the catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution was studied and the order of the electrocatalytic activity was LaFeO₃ > LaCoO₃ > LaNiO₃ > LaMnO₃, that was related to the calculated values of the activation energy 51.61, 45.37, 41.15 and 55.05 kJ mol⁻¹ for LaBO₃ (B = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn), respectively. The reaction order and the reaction mechanism for all the prepared perovskites were identified. In addition, the effect of the partial substitution at the B-site in LaNi_{1 − x}Co_xO₃ was also studied. It was found that among ternary perovskites, the catalytic activity of LaNiO₃ decreased by increasing the fraction of doped-Co.     

A dual‐broadband circularly polarized halved falcate‐shape printed monopole antenna

A halved falcate‐shape dual‐broadband circularly polarized printed monopole antenna is proposed. To generate the equal amplitude orthogonal modes, two halved falcate‐shaped antenna are used. Also, to provide the 90° phase difference between the two modes, three stubs are used in the ground plane of the antenna. The proposed antenna provides 22.6 (1.36–1.72 GHz) and 44.4% (5.25–8.25 GHz) 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth over the lower and upper bands, respectively. By adjusting the parameters of the antenna, the lower and upper band center frequencies can be tuned individually. The proposed antenna is fabricated, and results are compared with those of the simulation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2011.
