The purpose of this study was to model the effect of 3 divergent strains of Holstein-Friesian cows in 3 pasture-based feed systems on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The 3 strains of Holstein-Friesian compared were high-production North American (HP), high-durability North American (HD), and New Zealand (NZ). The 3 feed systems were a high grass allowance system (MP, control); high stocking rate system (HS); and high concentrate supplementation system (HC). The MP system had an overall stocking rate of 2.47 cows/ha and received 325 kg of dry matter concentrate per cow in early lactation. The HS system had a similar concentrate input to the MP system, but had an overall stocking rate of 2.74 cows/ha. The HC system had a similar overall stocking rate to the MP system, but 1,445 kg of dry matter concentrate was offered per cow. A newly developed integrated economic-GHG farm model was used to evaluate the 9 milk production systems. The GHG model estimates on-farm (emissions arising within the farm's physical boundaries) and production system (incorporating all emissions associated with the production system up to the point milk leaves the farm gate) GHG emissions. Production system GHG emissions were always greater than on-farm emissions, and the ranking of the 9 systems was usually consistent under both methods. The exception was the NZ strain that achieved their lowest GHG emission per unit of product in the HC system when indirect emissions were excluded, but their lowest emission was in the HS system when indirect emissions were included. Generally, the results showed that as cow strain changed from lower (HD and NZ) to higher genetic potential (HP) for milk production, the GHG emission per kilogram of milk solids increased. This was because of a decline in cow fertility in the HP strain that resulted in a higher number of nonproductive animals, leading to a lower total farm milk solids production and an increase in emissions from nonproductive animals. The GHG emission per hectare increased for all strains moving from MP to HS to HC feed systems and this was associated with increases in herd total feed intake. The most profitable combination was the NZ strain in the HS system and this combination resulted in a 12% reduction in production system GHG emission per hectare compared with the NZ strain in the HC system, which produced the highest emissions. This demonstrates that grass-based systems can achieve high profitability and decreased GHG emissions simultaneously.  相似文献

New data are presented describing the retention time and longitudinal dispersion of a solute tracer across circular surcharged manhole structures of different diameters. The variations with both discharge and surcharge level are described and the relationships quantified. The variation of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient exhibits poorly defined trends, however using an aggregated dead zone technique both the reach time delay and travel time show clear variations. A surcharge threshold level for these parameters is evident at the larger manhole diameters and this is explained in relation to jet theory. The variation of the surcharge mean time delay and postthreshold mean travel time are quantified, while the prethreshold travel times are shown to be dependent on both discharge and surcharge. The relationships allow for inclusion in sewer water quality modeling and provide a method for improving predictive techniques.  相似文献

Several isotopes are examined as alternatives to 238Pu that is traditionally used in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) and heating units (RHUs). The radioisotopes discussed include 241Am, 208Po, 210Po, and 90Sr. The aim of this study is to facilitate the design of an RTG with a minimal radiation dose rate and mass including any required shielding. Applications of interest are primarily space and planetary exploration. In order to evaluate the properties of the alternative radioisotopes a Monte Carlo model was developed to examine the radiation protection aspect of the study. The thermodynamics of the power generation process is examined and possible materials for the housing and encapsulation of the radioisotopes are proposed. In this study we also present a historical review of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) and the thermoelectric conversion mechanism in order to provide a direct comparison with the performance of our proposed alternative isotope systems.  相似文献

Two interlinked and complex problems face energy policy‐makers: future energy supplies and climate change. The choices made on energy mix will lock development pathways for some considerable time ahead. Climate change is a challenging problem. Decarbonising the energy system requires sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies that work within the context of the planetary environment and do not cause “collateral damage”. Several approaches are available. But nuclear power is an unsustainable technology that has already caused “collateral damage” and will leave a toxic legacy of waste, for which there appears to be no solution. A set of procedural guidelines have been developed in 1991 for evaluating the environmental impact of scientific research programs and their associated logistic support facilities in Antarctica. In view of this, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study of the Indian Antarctic station — Maitri was conducted during the austral summer of 1994–95. Studies covered different components of environment, viz. air, noise, water, wastewater, solid waste and land. Different sources of pollution were identified and the samples were analyzed to assess the current status of environment. The present communication delineates not only the details of the studies undertaken, but also suggests guidelines towards effective Environmental Management Plan (EMP) so as to mitigate the adverse impacts likely to be caused by various activities.  相似文献

In this paper, based on recent research on BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles, BT/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposites, frequency-dependent dielectric properties of such a material system with high energy density have been investigated as functions of the volume fraction of the nanoparticles at room temperature by several theoretical models. For single domain and single crystals of BT, a Debye type of dissipation and soft mode theory have been adopted to obtain a more precise frequency-dependent dielectric spectrum of BT. For nanodielectric composites, among the others, Wiener Rule, Lichtenecker model, Maxwell–Wagner model, Yamada, and modified Kerner model were applied to evaluate the frequency-dependent dielectric spectrum of nanocomposites. A simple rule of mixture for the dielectric loss tangent was obtained using Lichtenecker logarithmic rule. The results from theoretical calculations are compared with the experimental data. For the dielectric constant, Lichtenecker model, Maxwell–Wagner model, and Yamada model show reasonable agreements with the experimental data up to 50 % volume fraction of the nanoparticles. At the higher volume fraction of the nanoparticles, the experimental data show a decreasing trend of the dielectric constant of the composites due to an increase in porosity of the system. In this case, a three-phase model (nanoparticles/pores/matrix) was developed to predict dielectric properties of the system at higher volume fraction of the nanoparticles (up to 80 %). The results showed reasonable agreements for a wide range of frequency. This theoretical study provides an essential information on dielectric properties of polymer-based BT nanocomposites with a wide frequency range instead of the trial-and-error strategy of experiments and can be used for designing high energy density dielectric materials in the future.  相似文献

Monolayers of heptadecenoic acid (vinyl acid) were spread at a gas-water interface. The terminal double bond of the vinyl acid enabled it to be polymerized on exposure to UV radiation. Pressure-area isotherms for both monomer and polymer vinyl acid were then recorded and compared with isotherms from similar compounds.Preliminary studies were conducted to minimize the degree of dissolution of the fatty acid. The polymerization kinetics were examined by the use of UV spectroscopy and measurements of the reduction in the area occupied by the film at a constant surface pressure. The reaction appeared to follow zero-order kinetics after an initial acceleration period. The rate constant for the reaction increased with increasing surface pressure.A dynamic mechanical test was performed to determine the mechanical properties of monolayers at the gas-water interface. Films were polymerized to various conversions and then examined to determine the relation between mechanical properties and conversion. A simple model is proposed to correlate the monolayer's structure and the dynamic mechanical data.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to validate a previously published point score system for predicting the likelihood of a postoperative blood transfusion following hip or knee replacement. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were collected prospectively on 460 sequential patients undergoing elective hip and knee replacement at two academic hospitals. Blood transfusion frequency was determined for patients in each of the four risk strata, as defined by the point score system. The accuracy of the system was validated by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for each site. Data were then combined and inappropriate blood transfusions were eliminated, by using the American College of Physicians guidelines. The frequencies of blood transfusion within each strata were recalculated along with an ROC curve. RESULTS: The point score system accurately predicted the likelihood of blood transfusion at both hospitals, despite marked differences in overall transfusion frequencies. The calculated areas under the ROC curves were 0.78 and 0.79 for the two sites. The point score system also proved valid when only appropriate blood transfusions were considered, with a calculated area under the ROC curve of 0.74. CONCLUSION: The point score system can accurately predict the likelihood of postoperative blood transfusion following hip or knee replacement. Such a system can be used to target high-risk patients for preoperative autologous blood donation.  相似文献

The assay for cassava cyanogens developed at the Natural Resources Institute has been modified to overcome some of the problems encountered when the assay is applied to cassava products. Inclusion of 25% ethanol in the extraction medium increased the volume of recovered extract from heat-processed cassava products, eliminated the need for centrifugation and did not interfere with any aspect of the assay. Greater cyanohydrin recovery was noted and the calculation for cyanogen contents was changed to take into account the total extract volume. The separate assay of the three cyanogens (glucosides, cyanohydrins and free cyanide) was achieved by buffering aliquots of the extract followed by appropriate treatment. The importance of assaying for free cyanide (HCN) at pH 4 was demonstrated. Above this pH, cyanohydrin degradation also produces free cyanide, giving rise to misleading values. The efficiency of the extraction medium in recovering added linamarin and cyanohydrin from cassava foods was determined. Recoveries of cyanohydrin were improved using the ethanol/acid medium. The stability of the cyanogens in the ethanol/acid extraction medium was tested at ambient and refrigeration temperatures. Over a two-month period, refrigerated extracts showed acceptable variation as compared with normal variation within the assay (5%) for total and non-glycosidic cyanogens but the levels of free cyanide showed heavy losses (15–56% lost). Since the relative toxicities of the three cyanogens have yet to be ascertained, the relative amount of each cyanogen may be important when assessing the safety of cassava products.  相似文献
