We further investigate the properties of composite Poly(NIPAM) (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)) gel-filled giant vesicles, focusing here on i) the homogeneity of the membrane, ii) its coupling to the inner gel under strong suction pressures, and iii) the relation between the final elastic modulus of the vesicles and the amount of crosslinker in the pre-gel medium. We show that whereas the photo-polymerization process induces a decrease of the membrane homogeneity at the micrometer size range, the membrane still remains strongly coupled to the internal gel network. The vesicles studied here display average moduli in the range [0.5–25] kPa, confirming their potential as biomimetic mechanical systems.  相似文献

We present numerical results obtained by 3D-BPM concerning evanescent field coupling in monomode fibres. At first we study the coupling between a monomode fibre and a mode sink. We show the existence or the absence of guided modes. BPM, is also applied to the study of directional couplers consisting of two fibres separated by an index liquid. The transmission coefficient is computed for various geometries and the electric field intensity is visualised by plotting isovalues.  相似文献

Old and new algorithms for the Maximum Satisfiability problem are studied. We first summarize the different heuristics previously proposed, i.e., the approximation algorithms of Johnson and of Lieberherr for the general Maximum Satisfiability problem, and the heuristics of Lieberherr and Specker, Poljak and Turzik for the Maximum 2-Satisfiability problem. We then consider two recent local search algorithmic schemes, the Simulated Annealing method of Kirkpatrick, Gelatt and Vecchi and the Steepest Ascent Mildest Descent method, and adapt them to the Maximum Satisfiability problem. The resulting algorithms, which avoid being blocked as soon as a local optimum has been found, are shown empirically to be more efficient than the heuristics previously proposed in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a research on the organisation of common channel signalling network CCITTn° 7 for the French network. The rate of formation of spheroplasts of yeast can be used as an assay to study the structural integrity of cell walls. Lysis can be measured spectrophotometrically in hypotonic solution in the presence of Zymolyase, a mixture of cell wall-digesting enzymes. The optical density of the cell suspension decreases as the cells lyse. We optimized this assay with respect to enzyme concentration, temperature, pH, and growth conditions for several strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The level of variability (standard deviation) was 1–5% between trials where the replications were performed on the same culture using enzyme prepared from the same lot, and 5–15% for different cultures of the same strain. This assay can quantitate differences in cell wall structure (1) between exponentially growing and stationary phase cells, (2) among different S. cerevisiae strains, (3) between S. cerevisiae and Candida albicans, (4) between parental and mutated lines, and (5) between drug- or chemically-treated cells and controls. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Crosslinked carboxymethyl starch (CMS) was synthesized from potato starch in a single‐step procedure with mono‐ (MCA) and dichloroacetic acid (DCA), using the well‐known Williamson reaction. The products varied in their degree of substitution DS (average number of carboxymethyl groups per monomer unit) and crosslinker ratio Fz (number of crosslinker molecules offered per monomer unit). After neutralizing and removal of the formed salt, one part of the synthesized CMS networks was pre‐swollen in water in an additional purification step in order to wash out unlinked, soluble polymer chains. The rest of the product remained unwashed. Different swelling experiments were performed with the two samples, before being dried and ground. Both, the Free Swelling Capacity (FSC) and the Absorption Capacity Under Mechanical Load (AUL) of the hydrogels were strongly influenced by chemically unlinked CMS chains that were only physically entangled in the network structure. These mobile polymer segments were responsible for a significant weight loss of the swollen, unwashed hydrogels over the course of time. Rheological oscillatory experiments showed that, in order to achieve comparable values for the storage and loss moduli (G′ and G′′), the polymer content of an unwashed hydrogel had to be more than twice as high as that of the corresponding purified product. By using a special rheological test procedure with a cyclic temperature program, the long‐term stability of CMS gels could be measured and verified.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to measure diversity in nutrition with dietary scores, and to assess their relationship to vegetable production and the socio-economic status of women in rural Tanzania. A dietary diversity score (DDS) and a food variety score (FVS) were created from data gathered with three semi-quantitative 24-h recalls performed during three non-consecutive seasons during 2006/2007. Data on vegetable production, selling and buying and socio-economic data was gathered with a semi-quantitative questionnaire. A total of 252 randomly selected women from three districts of north-eastern and central Tanzania participated. The median DDS of 6 and the mean FVS of 8.3 were low, suggesting an overall poor dietary quality, with about one third of participants having an alarmingly low DDS of only two to four food groups per day. These women consumed a very basic diet consisting mainly of cereals and vegetables. Differences among districts were pronounced while those among seasons were less distinct. The DDS and FVS were both significantly associated with ethnicity, occupation and status within the household of participants. As a more varied diet is not necessarily healthier, integration of both quantity and quality in the scores is proposed for future studies. This can be achieved, for example, by weighing food types according to their importance in the diet. As both scores are linked to the production, selling and buying of vegetables, the promotion of homestead food production may be a good way to improve dietary diversity.  相似文献
