Re-educating inactive radiologic technologists to re-enter practice may be an untapped source of personnel to ease the current shortage. Inactive technologists in Indiana were surveyed to learn if they were interested in returning to the work force. Results indicate that nearly 60% would consider returning to work and more than 90 percent would consider taking reentry courses.  相似文献

The units of knowledge that form cognitive plans for music performance were examined in production errors. In Exp 1, pianists performed multivoice homophonic music (containing strong across-voice associations) and polyphonic music (containing strong within-voice associations). Pitch errors reflected more chordal (across-voice) units in homophonic performances and more single-note units in polyphonic performances. Error instructions were harmonically and diatonically related to their intended pitches more often than chance, which demonstrates retrieval-based influences on planning. In Exp 2, pianists conceptualized 1 of several voices as melody. Both the melody and the voice controlled by outer right-hand fingers (a common location of melody) contained fewer errors, which implies that there are conceptual, retrieval-based, and articulatory influences on units of knowledge that contribute to planning music performance. Improvements in the processing speed of multiprocessors are outpacing improvements in the speed of disk hardware. Parallel disk I/O subsystems have been proposed as one way to close the gap between processor and disk speeds. In a previous paper we showed that prefetching and caching have thepotential to deliver the performance benefits of parallel file systems to parallel applications. In this paper we describe experiments withpractical prefetching policies that base decisions only on on-line reference history, and that can be implemented efficiently. In the opportunistic pathogen Pneumocystis carinii, dihydroneopterin aldolase function is expressed as the N-terminal portion of the multifunctional folic acid synthesis protein (Fas). This region encompasses two domains, FasA and FasB, which are 27% amino acid identical. FasA and FasB also share significant amino acid sequence similarity with bacterial dihydroneopterin aldolases. In the present study, this enzyme function has been overproduced as an independent monofunctional activity in Escherichia coli. Recombinant FasAB-Met23 (amino acids 23-290 of the predicted open reading frame) was purified and shown to contain dihydroneopterin aldolase activity. The native FasAB-Met23 is a tetramer of the 30-kDa subunit, demonstrating characteristics of an associating-dissociating equilibrium system in which only the multimeric form of the enzyme is active. Multiple sequence alignment of FasA and FasB with other dihydroneopterin aldolases highlights only three positions where the amino acid is invariable between all the predicted proteins. The role of these conserved amino acid residues in enzyme function was investigated using site-directed mutagenesis. Mutant FasAB-Met23 species were overproduced and purified to near homogeneity. Three FasA domain mutants and two FasB domain mutants had little or no detectable dihydroneopterin aldolase activity, implicating both FasA and FasB in the catalytic mechanism. We show that each mutant protein containing an inactivating amino acid substitution has lost its ability to form stable tetramers.  相似文献

The ErbB signaling network consists of four transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinases and more than a dozen ligands sharing an epidermal growth factor (EGF) motif. The multiplicity of ErbB-specific ligands is incompletely understood in terms of signal specificity because all ErbB molecules signal through partially overlapping pathways. Here we addressed the action of epiregulin, a recently isolated ligand of ErbB-1. By employing a set of factor-dependent cell lines engineered to express individual ErbBs or their combinations, we found that epiregulin is the broadest specificity EGF-like ligand so far characterized: not only does it stimulate homodimers of both ErbB-1 and ErbB-4, it also activates all possible heterodimeric ErbB complexes. Consistent with its relaxed selectivity, epiregulin binds the various receptor combinations with an affinity that is approximately 100-fold lower than the affinity of ligands with more stringent selectivity, including EGF. Nevertheless, epiregulin's action upon most receptor combinations transmits a more potent mitogenic signal than does EGF. This remarkable discrepancy between binding affinity and bioactivity is permitted by a mechanism that prevents receptor down-regulation, and results in a weak, but prolonged, state of receptor activation.  相似文献

A tactile stimulator was built for studying motion processing in the somatic sensory system of primates. This stimulator is used for assessing the responses of neurons of the somatic sensory system to stimuli moving in any traverse distance (range: 2-20 mm), with a variety of velocities (range: 4-120 mm/s), forces (range: 0-60 gf), and in any scanning direction. The stimulator is highly automated and can be used in combined psychophysical and neurophysiological studies in humans and in behaving monkeys.  相似文献

A 24-year-old woman with ataxia-telangiectasia had traumatic arthritis, elevated serum transaminase values, polyuria, polydipsia, and a serum glucose level of 575 mg/dL. A relatively high daily dose of insulin (2.8 U/kg) was required to achieve near normoglycemia. The fasting insulin concentration was elevated. During an insulin-modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test, the first phase of insulin release in response to the administration of glucose was blunted. The insulin sensitivity was similar to that found in individuals with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Insulin receptor antibodies were not detected in the serum. We conclude that insulin resistance and islet beta-cell dysfunction are characteristics of diabetes mellitus in ataxia-telangiectasia. Contrary to a previous report, our findings do not support a cause-and-effect relationship between insulin receptor antibodies and insulin resistance in this disorder.  相似文献

The primary objective in the surgery of extra large vestibular schwannoma is the total removal of the tumour mass while preserving the facial nerve. Preservation of the facial nerve in extra large tumours is reported as being notoriously difficult in the majority of cases. This study was undertaken to evaluate the accuracy in predicting displacement of the facial nerve by preoperative radiological imaging studies in 19 cases of extra large vestibular schwannoma. The direction of displacement of the facial nerve was predicted with preoperative axial and coronal MRI scans and verified intraoperatively. We achieved total removal of tumours in 84.2%, facial nerve displacement was predicted in 80% and we accomplished anatomical preservation in 80%. Prediction of displacement was difficult in tumours with little or no intracanalicular components or with severe bony destruction of the internal acoustic meatus. The preoperative prediction of facial nerve displacement in extra large tumours allows safe internal decompression of the tumour and careful dissection near the predicted area of the facial nerve during the operation. Consequently, a high rate of anatomical preservation of the facial nerve can be achieved.  相似文献

A socioeconomic and medicodemographic analysis of modern problems related to population health protection in the oil and gas extraction regions of Tyumen Province has been carried out under conditions of radical reconstruction of the national economy. Changes in the parameters of natural migration of the population for each year over a period of 1991 to 1995 are followed up, and specific features of the migration processes, effects of socioeconomic and medical factors on the health status of individual population groups, rates of increment in the number of disabled subjects, and population mortality from various causes analyzed. The authors discuss the status of public health services and offer measures for improving their efficacy in the above regions.  相似文献
