To investigate the relationships between helminth infections and iron status among school-aged children, 1,115 Tanzanian children in grades 2 through 5 were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. The children in the treatment group were screened for infection with Schistosoma haematobium and hookworm at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months; infected children were given albendazole against hookworm and praziquantel against schistosomiasis. The control group received a placebo and did not undergo parasitological screening until 15 months after the baseline. Hematological variables were compared between the treatment and control groups. The main results were, first, that the hemoglobin concentration significantly improved after treatment for hookworm (p < .001) by 9.3 g/L in children treated for hookworm only and by 8.8 g/L in children treated for hookworm and schistosomiasis. The ferritin concentration also improved in children treated for schistosomiasis (p = .001) or hookworm (p = .019). Second, a longitudinal analysis of the data from the children in the control group showed that hookworm and schistosomiasis loads were negatively associated with hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations. Moreover, ferritin concentrations increased as C-reactive protein levels increased. Overall, the results showed that anthelmintic treatment is a useful tool for reducing anemia in areas with high hookworm and schistosomiasis endemicity. The empirical relationship between ferritin and C-reactive protein indicated that simple procedures for adjusting cutoff points for the use of ferritin as an indicator of low iron stores were unlikely to be useful in this population. 相似文献

In order to develop a microbiological baseline of meat produced for domestic consumption in the state of New South Wales, chilled carcases were sampled from 16 abattoirs. Aerobic Plate Counts (APCs) and Escherichia coli counts were obtained from samples taken by sponging sites specified for each species in the Microbiological Guidelines to the Australian meat standard. On beef carcases the mean log10 APC/cm2 was 2.21 and E. coli was detected on 25% of carcases (mean log positives ?0.61/cm2). For sheep carcases corresponding values were 2.4, 53% and log10 -0.06/cm2, respectively. For pig carcases values were 2.81, 63% and log10 -0.23/cm2, respectively. For skin-off goat carcases values were 1.15, 27% and log10 -0.38/cm2, respectively. In the present survey, levels of indicator bacteria on carcases processed via the co-regulatory system operated in Australia were similar to those established in surveys of abattoirs that operate the traditional system overseen by government inspectors. 相似文献

The oxidation products formed at 500 and 700°C on an amorphous Ta-44.5 at% Ir alloy in an Ar-0.1% O2 gas mixture were characterized using SEM, XRD, EPMA, TEM, STEM, AES, and XPS. Initially, a thin (3–4 nm) layer of Ta2O5 formed at the surface of the alloy. Continued growth of the Ta2O5, which occurred very rapidly, involved diffusion of oxygen anions from the Ta2O5/gas interface to the alloy/Ta2O5 interface, where tantalum was selectively oxidized. Because the oxide grew more quickly than iridium could diffuse back into the alloy, the iridium coalesced into platelets of crystalline iridium-rich alloy that were oriented approximately parallel to the oxide/alloy interface, and which became embedded in a matrix of Ta2O5. The unoxidized core remained in the glassy state. The oxidation process and/or the dissolution of oxygen into the unoxidized alloy caused the alloy to become embrittled. 相似文献

The antioxidative and anti‐allergic activities of fresh and aged black garlic extracts were investigated. The garlic samples were extracted with 70% ethanol (v/v) and the total phenolic content was measured. The antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by determining the scavenging activities on 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radicals, ferricyanide reducing power, ferrous ion‐chelating ability and inhibitory effect on linoleic acid peroxidation. The anti‐allergic activity of extracts was analysed by measuring their inhibitory effects against β‐hexosaminidase release. The aged black garlic exhibited significantly higher phenolic content and greater antioxidative activity than fresh garlic. Both garlic extracts showed strong antioxidant capacity in a dose‐dependent manner. On the other hand, a considerably higher suppression of β‐hexosaminidase release was found in fresh garlic extract at lower concentration compared with that of the black garlic. Results of this study illustrate that ageing of garlic could enhance its antioxidant capacity, but could decrease its anti‐allergic activity. 相似文献

The technological properties of 96 lactic acid bacteria isolated from Lebanese traditional fermented milk "laban" were characterised. They were classified by phenotypic and biochemical analyses as Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, thus indicating that laban is a fermented milk similar to yogurt. Most strains of L. bulgaricus (87.5%) exhibited a high acidification activity, whereas strains of streptococci showed low acidification ability. 33.3% of streptococci strains and 25% of lactobacilli strains displayed similar acidification performances as European strains. Results obtained for syneresis, texture and rheological parameters led us to consider that isolated strains were not low polymer-producing strains. Some of them displayed interesting characteristics such as low syneresis and high values for rheological parameters. The major flavour compounds found in pure cultures were acetaldehyde, acetone, 2-butanone, dimethyl disulfide, acetoin, 2,3-butanedione, 2,3-pentanedione, and acetic, hexanoic and butanoic acids. Acetaldehyde (7.4%) and organic acids (48.3%) were mainly produced by L. bulgaricus strains, whereas streptococci cultures contained high relative levels of 2,3-butanedione and acetoin, which represented around 82% of the total flavour compounds. Finally, strains isolated from laban samples exhibited different technological properties than those used in yogurt production, thus conferring specific characteristics to this product. 相似文献

Effects of deBDE and PCB-126 on hepatic concentrations of PBDEs and methoxy-PBDEs in Atlantic tomcod 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The biotransformation of high bromosubstituted polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) congeners contained in a commercial deca mixture (DeBDE) is of environmental concern because it might lead to the increase of toxic low brominated PBDEs in biota. A few studies have reported that freshwater fish dietary exposed to DeBDE or its main constituent, decabrominated PBDE congener (BDE-209), had their tissues enriched with PBDEs not initially present in fish or feed. In the present study, Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) were intraperitoneally (IP) injected with DeBDE to assess hepatic concentration changes of PBDEs and methoxy polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) in a marine fish species. Tomcod were also IP injected with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-126 to evaluate the impact of cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) induction on the biotransformation of injected PBDEs contained in DeBDE and PBDEs initially present in fish. Besides BDE-209, concentrations of BDE-203 and three other unidentified octabrominated PBDEs and the nonabrominated PBDEs (BDE-206, -207, and -208) were enriched in the liver of fish injected with DeBDE. All these PBDE congeners, essentially absent in control fish, were identified as impurities in DeBDE, and, thus, their presence could not be attributed exclusivelyto biotransformation. Despite a 4.3times increase of EROD activity in the liver of tomcod injected with both PCB-126 and DeBDE, compared to DeBDE alone, no further increases of PBDE hepatic concentrations were observed. However, depleted concentrations of BDE-17 (x 1.5) and 6-MeO-BDE-47 (x 1.4) were found in fish IP injected with DeBDE compared to control fish, likely due to activated hepatic metabolic enzymes other than CYP1A. Fish injected with PCB-126 showed an even more significant depletion of BDE-17 hepatic concentrations (x 3.5) than the one associated with the DeBDE treatment and a significantly lower proportion of fish with quantifiable concentrations of BDE-203. Thus, CYP1A inducers can promote the biotransformation of PBDEs in fish liver. This study shows that exposure of fish to DeBDE is expected to result in the enrichment of high brominated PBDEs in fish liver and that metabolic activities in fish can affect their PBDE bioaccumulation pattern and possibly the toxicity of PBDEs to fish. 相似文献

The prevalence of the Campylobacter multi-drug efflux pump (CmeABC) was evaluated in Campylobacter isolates recovered from freshly processed turkeys at two Midwestern processing plants. A total of 94 Campylobacter isolates recovered from processed turkeys were examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to determine the presence of the multi-drug efflux pump genes cmeA, cmeB, and cmeC. Results from this study found that 51% of all isolates tested were positive for CmeABC. 46.6% of these positive isolates were from plant A and 55.1% from plant B. Differences were observed in the prevalence of individual genes found among Campylobacter isolates from each plant. Additional analysis found that among the isolates positive for CmeABC, 85.5% were identified as C. jejuni and 14.5% identified as C. coli. There was a relatively high occurrence of the Campylobacter multi-drug efflux pump genes in Campylobacter spp. recovered from processed turkeys, however, the presence of the genes could not be significantly linked to antimicrobial resistance observed in the test strains and suggests that the CmeABC genes are only one factor associated with antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp. 相似文献

Despite the wide public and scientific interest in antioxidant nutrients and their roles in disease prevention, limited data are available to assess population consumption, individuals’ intake patterns, and trends in exposure. This article reviews data on levels of these nutrients in the food supply, intake patterns from food and supplement use derived from national surveys, and trends in exposure. The food supply and intake data indicate that levels of vitamins E and C and the carotenoids in the diet have increased since the 1970s, but the increases are not consistent among all age groups. Dietary supplements make a major contribution to intakes of vitamins E and C. Nutrient and nonnutrient antioxidants added to the food supply do not contribute appreciably to antioxidant exposure. Groups at high risk of poor dietary intakes of antioxidant nutrients are the poor, tobacco users, nonsupplement users, and the elderly, especially those living alone. 相似文献

Resilience in river ecosystems requires that organisms must persist in the face of highly dynamic hydrological and geomorphological variations. Disturbance events such as floods and droughts are postulated to shape life history traits that support resilience, but river management and conservation would benefit from greater understanding of the emergent effects in communities of river organisms. We unify current knowledge of taxonomic‐, phylogenetic‐, and trait‐based aspects of river communities that might aid the identification and quantification of resilience mechanisms. Temporal variations in river productivity, physical connectivity, and environmental heterogeneity resulting from floods and droughts are highlighted as key characteristics that promote resilience in these dynamic ecosystems. Three community‐wide mechanisms that underlie resilience are (a) partitioning (competition/facilitation) of dynamically varying resources, (b) dispersal, recolonization, and recruitment promoted by connectivity, and (c) functional redundancy in communities promoted by resource heterogeneity and refugia. Along with taxonomic and phylogenetic identity, biological traits related to feeding specialization, dispersal ability, and habitat specialization mediate organism responses to disturbance. Measures of these factors might also enable assessment of the relative contributions of different mechanisms to community resilience. Interactions between abiotic drivers and biotic aspects of resource use, dispersal, and persistence have clear implications for river conservation and management. To support these management needs, we propose a set of taxonomic, phylogenetic, and life‐history trait metrics that might be used to measure resilience mechanisms. By identifying such indicators, our proposed framework can enable targeted management strategies to adapt river ecosystems to global change. 相似文献
