Since the first prehistoric people started to dig for stone to make implements, rather than pick up loose material, humans have modified the landscape through excavation of rock and soil, generation of waste and creation of artificial ground. In Great Britain over the past 200 years, people have excavated, moved and built up the equivalent of at least six times the volume of Ben Nevis. It is estimated that the worldwide deliberate annual shift of sediment by human activity is 57,000 Mt (million tonnes) and exceeds that of transport by rivers to the oceans (22,000 Mt) almost by a factor of three. Humans sculpt and transform the landscape through the physical modification of the shape and properties of the ground. As such, humans are geological and geomorphological agents and the dominant factor in landscape evolution through settlement and widespread industrialization and urbanization. The most significant impact of this has been since the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, coincident with increased release of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The anthropogenic sedimentological record, therefore, provides a marker on which to characterize the Anthropocene.  相似文献

The use of thermoresponsive surfaces as platforms for cell culture and cell regeneration has been explored over the last couple of decades. Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAm) is a well characterized thermoresponsive polymer which has an aqueous lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in a physiologically useful range, which allows it to reversibly attract (T < 32 °C) and repel water (T > 32 °C). It is this phenomenon that is exploited in temperature-controlled cell harvesting. pNIPAm coatings are generally poorly cell compatible and a number of complex or expensive techniques have been developed in order to overcome this issue. This study seeks to design a simple one-step system whereby commercially sourced pNIPAm is used to achieve similar results. Films were deposited using the operationally simple but rheologically complex spin coating technique. Reversible temperature modulated cell adhesion was achieved using a variety of different cell lines. This system offers a simplistic and cheaper alternative to methods used elsewhere.  相似文献

The growth and ordering of {5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)porphyrinato}nickel(II) (NiTBrPP) molecules on the Au(111) surface have been investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy, X-ray absorption, core-level photoemission, and microbeam low-energy electron diffraction. When deposited onto the substrate at room temperature, the NiTBrPP forms a well-ordered close-packed molecular layer in which the molecules have a flat orientation with the porphyrin macrocycle plane lying parallel to the substrate. Annealing of the NiTBrPP layer on the Au(111) surface at 525 K leads to dissociation of bromine from the porphyrin followed by the formation of covalent bonds between the phenyl substituents of the porphyrin. This results in the formation of continuous covalently bonded porphyrin networks, which are stable up to 800 K and can be recovered after exposure to ambient conditions. By controlling the experimental conditions, a robust, extended porphyrin network can be prepared on the Au(111) surface that has many potential applications such as protective coatings, in sensing or as a host structure for molecules and clusters.  相似文献

We report a unique mechanism‐guided reaction that enhances and expands the chemical space that readily generated gold(I) acetylides currently operate in. Our strategy exploits the propensity of gold(I) carbophilic catalysts with specific counteranions (LAuX – X=triflate or triflimidate) to efficiently activate and desilylate trimethylsilylalkynes, thereby mediating the in situ formation of equal and catalytic quantities of a silyl Lewis acid (TMSX) of tunable strength and a nucleophilic gold(I) acetylide. This unprecedented manifold opens avenues for developing synergistic silyl‐gold(I)‐catalyzed alkynylation strategies of diverse pro‐electrophiles which were heretofore unattainable, the proof of concept being principally exemplified herein with the first catalytic alkynylation of N,O‐acetals. The reaction proceeds at low catalyst loading, employs mild reaction conditions, is easily scalable, and affords propargylic lactam products in good to excellent yields. Furthermore, it is fully amenable to a diverse array of structure and function substrates, and also expands to other pro‐electrophiles beyond N,O‐acetals. Control experiments have been carried out that strongly support our dual reaction mechanism proposal which, furthermore, itself outlines an inextricable link between the strength of the ancillary silyl Lewis acid (TMSOTf versus TMSNTf2) and the coordinating ability of the gold counter anion employed. This underlying feature of our system underscores its significant potential and flexibility, which indeed manifests with the demonstration that by carefully selecting the gold counter ion, it is possible to manipulate the strength of the ancillary silyl Lewis acid so that it can be tailored to the ionizing ability of a particular pro‐electrophile.

While political opposition or regulatory agencies themselves may impede natural gas infrastructure projects, it is often the various environmental and citizen groups protesting these projects that create significant challenges. From the Keystone XL oil pipeline to liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, the strategies for derailing or slowing these projects often depend on the statutory and regulatory tools available, which differ by the governing statute—e.g., the Natural Gas Act (NGA) and the Interstate Commerce Act. Of course, other statutes, such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), influence how the applicable agency reviews a natural gas infrastructure project.  相似文献

We investigate wintertime indoor air quality and personal exposures to carbon monoxide (CO) in a rural village in Jilin province, where relatively homogeneous climatic and sociocultural factors facilitate investigation of household structural, fuel-related, and behavioral determinants of air pollution as well as relationships between different measures of air quality. Our time-resolved wintertime measurements of carbon monoxide and respirable particles (RSP) enable exploration of peak pollution periods in a village in Jilin Province, China, characterized by household use of both coal and biomass, as well as several "improved" (gas or electric) fuels. Our data indicate a 6-fold increase in peak 1 h PM (1.9 mg/m3) concentrations relative to 24 h mean PM (0.31 mg/m3). Peak 1 h CO concentrations (20.5 ppm) routinely approached and often (27%) exceeded the World Health Organization's 1 h guideline of 26 ppm, although the vast majority (95%) of kitchens were within China's residential indoor air quality guideline for CO on a 24 h basis. Choice of heating fuel and household smoking status were significant predictors of indoor air quality. Whether solid or "improved" (gas or electric) fuel was used for cooking had an even stronger effect, but in the opposite direction from expected, on both peak and daily average measures of air pollution. Peak pollution period concentrations of CO and PM were strongly correlated to daily concentrations of CO and RSP, respectively. Our results suggestthat due to the primary role of heating as a determinant of wintertime indoor air quality in northern Chinese villages, health-oriented interventions limited to provision of improved cooking fuel are insufficient. Our results illustrate that peak pollution periods may routinely exceed exposure regulations and evacuation limits, although this and previous studies document typical 24 h CO concentrations in rural Chinese kitchens to be within guidelines. Within a given village and for a given pollutant, daily pollutant concentrations may be strong predictors of peak pollution period concentrations.  相似文献
