Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually. For this reason, keeping up to date with the literature is often difficult. This paper is a five year update of the sports nutrition review article published as the lead paper to launch the JISSN in 2004 and presents a well-referenced overview of the current state of the science related to how to optimize training and athletic performance through nutrition. More specifically, this paper provides an overview of: 1.) The definitional category of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements; 2.) How dietary supplements are legally regulated; 3.) How to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4.) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and enhance recovery; and, 5.) An overview of our current understanding of the ergogenic value of nutrition and dietary supplementation in regards to weight gain, weight loss, and performance enhancement. Our hope is that ISSN members and individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice and consultation with their clients. 相似文献

The passivity of titanium, binary Ti‐15Mo and ternary Ti‐15Mo‐5Al alloys in hydrochloric acid solutions was studied by potentiostatic, potentiodynamic, linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The anodic passivity of binary Ti‐15Mo and ternary Ti‐15Mo‐5Al titanium alloys differs from that of the base metal in hydrochloric acid solutions. The corrosion potentials of both alloys are nobler than of the titanium because the beneficial effect of molybdenum. The critical passivation current density for binary Ti‐15Mo alloy is higher than of titanium; this fact can be explained by the instability of the constituent phases in hydrochloric acid solutions. Ternary Ti‐15Mo‐5Al alloy exhibits two critical passivation current densities (icr1 and icr2) with higher values than of the base metal and two critical passivation potentials (Ecr1 and Ecr2); at the first critical passivation potential (Ecr1) the porous titanium trioxide (Ti3O5) is formed and at the second critical passivation potential (Ecr2) this oxide is converted to a still higher valence oxide, the compact and protective titanium dioxide (TiO2). The dissolution current densities in the passive range of alloys are higher than of the base metal due the dissolution of the alloying elements in this potential range. The alloys are more resistant than titanium presenting lower corrosion rates. A three time constants equivalent circuit was fitted: one time constant is for the double layer capacity (Cdl) and for the passive film (Rp); another time constant is for the charge transfer reactions visualised by a constant phase element (CPE) and a resistance (R1); the third time constant is for diffusion processes through the passive film represented by a resistance (R2) and a Warburg element (W). 相似文献

Nanodiamonds that were prepared by high pressure/high temperature were functionalized with biomolecules for biological applications. Nanodiamonds (NDs, < or =35 nm) that were coated by silanization or with polyelectrolyte layers were grafted with a fluorescent thiolated peptide via a maleimido function; this led to an aqueous colloidal suspension that was stable for months. These substituted NDs were not cytotoxic for CHO cells. Their capacity to enter mammalian cells, and their localisation inside were ascertained after labelling the nucleus and actin, by examining the cells by confocal, reflected light and fluorescence microscopy. 相似文献

Lubricious thin films are used in plastic medical syringes in order to reduce the frictional forces between the syringe barrel and the rubber plunger. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) liquid films are the current accepted technology for reducing the friction forces in plastic medical syringes. However, major issues with these PDMS films exist, including interactions of the film with the stored injectable drugs and variations in the frictional response as the syringes are aged over time. A new silicon based, lubricious octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (L-OMCTS) thin film solid lubricant has been developed as a replacement for PDMS that provides acceptable and stable frictional responses without interacting with injectable drugs. A novel test method has been developed that can be used to successfully characterise the sliding frictional response of the L-OMCTS thin films at the syringe barrel and plunger interface. This test method will be used to provide future insight into how the frictional response of the L-OMCTS thin films is affected by various system parameters. This paper will mainly discuss the design of this new test method and provide some preliminary frictional response data. 相似文献

The ability of dendrimer 2G‐[Si{O(CH2)2N(Me)2+(CH2)2NMe3+(I?)2}]8 (NN16) to transfect a wide range of cell types, as well as the possible biomedical application in direct or indirect inhibition of HIV replication, was investigated. Cells implicated in HIV infection such as primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and immortalized suspension cells (lymphocytes), primary macrophages and dendritic cells, and immortalized adherent cells (astrocytes and trophoblasts) were analyzed. Dendrimer toxicity was evaluated by mitochondrial activity, cell membrane rupture, release of lactate dehydrogenase, erythrocyte hemolysis, and the effect on global gene expression profiles using whole‐genome human microarrays. Cellular uptake of genetic material was determined using flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Transfection efficiency and gene knockdown was investigated using dendrimer‐delivered antisense oligonucleotides and small interfering RNA (siRNA). Very little cytotoxicity was detected in a variety of cells relevant to HIV infection and erythrocytes after NN16 dendrimer treatment. Imaging of cellular uptake showed high transfection efficiency of genetic material in all cells tested. Interestingly, NN16 further enhanced the reduction of HIV protein 24 antigen release by antisense oligonucleotides due to improved transfection efficiency. Finally, the dendrimer complexed with siRNA exhibited therapeutic potential by specifically inhibiting cyclooxygenase‐2 gene expression in HIV‐infected nervous system cells. NN16 dendrimers demonstrated the ability to transfect genetic material into a vast array of cells relevant to HIV pathology, combining high efficacy with low toxicity. Synthetic diacylglycerol‐lactones (DAG‐lactones) are effective modulators of critical cellular signaling pathways, downstream of the lipophilic second messenger diacylglycerol, that activate a host of protein kinase C (PKC) isozymes and other nonkinase proteins that share similar C1 membrane‐targeting domains with PKC. A fundamental determinant of the biological activity of these amphiphilic molecules is the nature of their interactions with cellular membranes. This study examines the biological properties of charged DAG‐lactones exhibiting different alkyl groups attached to the heterocyclic nitrogen of an α‐pyridylalkylidene chain, and particularly the relationship between membrane interactions of the substituted DAG‐lactones and their respective biological activities. Our results suggest that bilayer interface localization of the N‐alkyl chain in the R2 position of the DAG‐lactones inhibits translocation of PKC isoenzymes onto the cellular membrane. However, the orientation of a branched alkyl chain at the bilayer surface facilitates PKC binding and translocation. This investigation emphasizes that bilayer localization of the aromatic side residues of positively charged DAG‐lactone derivatives play a central role in determining biological activity, and that this factor contributes to the diversity of biological actions of these synthetic biomimetic ligands. 相似文献

Susceptibility to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) was evaluated in steel welds for quenched and tempered armouring steel of 4.5 mm thickness. The welds were produced using the shielded metal arc welding process with low heat support and AWS E11018M 2.4 mm consumable. The susceptibility to HIC was evaluated by means of an implant test with modified geometry in welded joints with and without preheating being applied, using consumables in ideal stock conditions and exposed to the atmosphere. It was found that the consumable stock conditions were more relevant than preheating in regard to susceptibility to HIC. 相似文献

Wet filament winding technology has been extensively used for the manufacture of rotationally symmetric parts made of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). As the design and modeling of FRP-parts require numerous assumptions, deviations between calculated and achieved mechanical properties are expected. One aspect that contributes to this discrepancy is the assumption of a homogeneous rectangular cross-section of the fiber-band. In this work, the fiber-band geometry in a wet-winding process of carbon fiber cylinders is analyzed. An Infrared-optical system for the detection of the fiber bandwidth and winding-angle is implemented. The influence of the winding speed and the resin temperature is analyzed. An image processing algorithm for the automatic measurement of the fiber's bandwidth and winding-angle is developed. Manual and adaptive gamma corrections are implemented to improve image quality. In this study, the effect of the chemical nature of different calcium (Ca)-based minerals as flame retardant additives in combination with ammonium polyphosphate (APP), in 1:1 proportions, on the flame retardancy behavior and performance of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer was discussed. Combining APP with partly and completely hydrated calcium oxide led to superior flame-retardant function detected in mass loss calorimeter measurements with respect to the corresponding system containing carbonated calcium. This privileged character was attributed to the higher reactivity of hydrated Ca-based fillers toward APP in comparison with Ca carbonate, which induced the formation of an intumescent residue. The difference between reactivity potential of hydrated and dry Ca was demonstrated by the newly formed thermally stable species, and further evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis performed on APP/fillers blends. Moreover, the presence of more crystalline domains in the Ca/phosphorus-based compounds was evidenced by XRD analysis of the mass loss calorimeter test residues. The results of this work highlight the role of blend additive systems on the performance of flame retardancy of polymer materials. 相似文献

Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathies that leads to irreversible vision loss. The optic nerve head (ONH) is the site of initial optic nerve damage in glaucoma. ONH-derived lamina cribrosa (LC) cells synthesize extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins; however, these cells are adversely affected in glaucoma and cause detrimental changes to the ONH. LC cells respond to mechanical strain by increasing the profibrotic cytokine transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGFβ2) and ECM proteins. Moreover, microRNAs (miRNAs or miR) regulate ECM gene expression in different fibrotic diseases, including glaucoma. A delicate homeostatic balance between profibrotic and anti-fibrotic miRNAs may contribute to the remodeling of ONH. This study aimed to determine whether modulation of miRNAs alters the expression of ECM in human LC cells. Primary human normal and glaucoma LC cells were grown to confluency and treated with or without TGFβ2 for 24 h. Differences in expression of miRNAs were analyzed using miRNA qPCR arrays. miRNA PCR arrays showed that the miR-29 family was significantly decreased in glaucomatous LC cell strains compared to age-matched controls. TGFβ2 treatment downregulated the expression of multiple miRNAs, including miR-29c-3p, compared to controls in LC cells. LC cells transfected with miR-29c-3p mimics or inhibitors modulated collagen expression. 相似文献
