Modeling the development of biofilm density including active bacteria, inert biomass, and extracellular polymeric substances 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We present the unified multi-component cellular automaton (UMCCA) model, which predicts quantitatively the development of the biofilm's composite density for three biofilm components: active bacteria, inert or dead biomass, and extracellular polymeric substances. The model also describes the concentrations of three soluble organic components (soluble substrate and two types of soluble microbial products) and oxygen. The UMCCA model is a hybrid discrete-differential mathematical model and introduces the novel feature of biofilm consolidation. Our hypothesis is that the fluid over the biofilm creates pressures and vibrations that cause the biofilm to consolidate, or pack itself to a higher density over time. Each biofilm compartment in the model output consolidates to a different degree that depends on the age of its biomass. The UMCCA model also adds a cellular automaton algorithm that identifies the path of least resistance and directly moves excess biomass along that path, thereby ensuring that the excess biomass is distributed efficiently. The current work investigates the effect of collision angle on the breakage of particles under impact loads. The experiments were performed using a homemade experimental system that accelerates the particles horizontally toward the target using compressed air. The design of the system allows the angle of the target and the air velocity, both adjustable to check different collision angles at different impact velocities; and the tested material that was blown to the target to be collectible for measuring the percentage of broken particles for the analysis. In this study, six different materials were tested by conducting experiments with different collision angles and impact velocities. As expected, the results showed that the collision angle affects the breakage of the particles. When the collision angle becomes acute, i.e., less than 90° (perpendicular collision with the target), it results in less breakage of the particles for all tested materials and at all tested velocities. Consequently, an empirical model got established. This model can predict the median impact velocity that causes half of the particle population to break, depending upon collision angle and particle size. 相似文献

The contributions of text meaning, new between-word associations, and single-word repetition to priming in text rereading in younger and older adults, and in patients with Alzheimer's disease. (AD), were assessed in Experiment 1. Explicit recognition memory for text was also assessed. Equivalent single-word and between-word priming was observed for all groups, even though patients with AD showed impaired explicit memory for individual words in the text. The contribution of generalized reading task skill to priming in meaningless text rereading in younger adults was assessed in Experiment 2. Generalized reading task skill was also found to contribute to priming. These results reveal 3 mechanisms of priming: new between-word associations for meaningful and meaningless text, individual word repetition for meaningless text, and general task or skill factors for meaningless text. All priming mechanisms appear to be intact in older adults and in patients with AD. 相似文献

To examine the status of conceptual memory processes in amnesia, a conceptual memory task with implicit or explicit task instructions was given to amnesic and control groups. After studying a list of category exemplars, participants saw category labels and were asked to generate as many exemplars as possible (an implicit memory task) or to generate exemplars that had been in the prior study list (an explicit memory task). After incidental deep or shallow encoding of exemplars, amnesic patients showed normal implicit memory performance (priming), a normal levels-of-processing effect on priming, and impaired explicit memory performance. After intentional encoding of exemplars, amnesic patients showed impaired implicit and explicit memory performance. Results suggest that although amnesic patients can show impairments on implicit and explicit conceptual memory tasks, their deficit does not generalize to all conceptual memory tasks. The ability to effectively define disease status in ovarian cancer after initial therapy or to selectively screen high-risk populations remains a major challenge for in vivo monoclonal antibody (mAb)-targeted approaches. Antitumour murine mAbs (HMFG1, HMFG2, H317, and H17E2) and the reshaped human antibody Hu2PLAP (against placental alkaline phosphatase; PLAP), labelled with indium-111 and iodine-123, were evaluated for their ability to localise ovarian tumours in sequential studies of our group. Thirty patients with ovarian cancer, aged 40-78 years (median 60 years) were studied with HMFG1/G2: 11, and H317/H17E2: 19 murine mAbs. Six patients with ovarian cancer aged between 36 and 65 years (median 49 years) were studied with the reshaped human Hu2PLAP mAb (5 patients) or the murine H17E2 mAb (2 patients) labelled with 111In via a new macrocyclic chelating agent (DOTA). One of these was imaged twice, with H17E2- and Hu2PLAP-DOTA-111In, respectively. In 20 out of 22 patients with radiologically measurable ovarian cancer, the presence of tumour was confirmed by the murine mAb scan and correlated well with the findings of conventional radiology diagnostic methods. One of these patients with a negative H17E2 scan and a large abdominal mass at laparotomy was found to have a PLAP-negative tumour on immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the antibody scan revealed the presence of active disease, confirmed at laparotomy/laparoscopy, in 6 out of 8 patients considered to be in clinical complete remission. Best images were obtained at 24 and 48 h after the 123I and 111In mAbs, respectively. Successful imaging with the reshaped human antibody, Hu2PLAP, was seen in 2 patients with PLAP-positive tumours. Antibodies to DOTA developed in 2 patients. In conclusion, immunolocalisation of ovarian tumours is feasible with both murine and reshaped human mAbs. The sensitivity and specificity of the method appear very high in this pilot study, and in view of the absence of toxicity, the diagnostic contribution of this approach should be evaluated prospectively. Given the low number of patients without surgically detectable disease in the present study, future investigations should include more patients with no evidence of disease in order to provide more meaningful estimates of specificity. 相似文献

Fluent reprocessing of perceptual aspects of recently experienced stimuli is thought to support repetition priming effects on implicit perceptual memory tests. Although behavioral and neuropsychological dissociations demonstrate that separable mnemonic processes and neural substrates mediate implicit and explicit test performance, dual-process theories of memory posit that explicit recognition memory judgments may be based on familiarity derived from the same perceptual fluency that yields perceptual priming. Here we consider the relationship between familiarity-based recognition memory and implicit perceptual memory. A select review of the literature demonstrates that the fluency supporting implicit perceptual memory is functionally and anatomically distinct from that supporting recognition memory. In contrast to perceptual fluency, recognition familiarity is more sensitive to conceptual than to perceptual processing, and does not depend on modality-specific sensory cortices. Alternative possible relationships between familiarity in explicit memory and fluency in implicit memory are discussed. 相似文献

The participation of medial temporal-lobe structures in memory performance was examined by functional magnetic resonance imaging of local blood oxygenation level-dependent signals. Signals were measured during encoding into memory complex scenes or line drawings and during retrieval from memory of previously studied line drawings or words. Encoding tasks yielded increased signals for unfamiliar information in a posterior medial-temporal region that were focused in the parahippocampal cortex. Retrieval tasks yielded increased signals for successfully remembered information in an anterior medial-temporal region that were focused in the subiculum. Behavioral studies have shown that spatial skills, such as mental rotation, are correlated with preferences for certain types of spatial information. To be more specific, better mental rotation is associated with a preference for survey (maplike) spatial information relative to route (landmark or wayfinding) information. Functional MRI was used to investigate how individual differences in spatial skills (mental rotation) interact with encoding information from these 2 spatial perspectives. Despite similarities in performance across individuals for route and survey learning, differences between route and survey encoding activation increased with increased mental rotation ability in anterior cingulate, middle frontal gyrus, and postcentral gyrus. This correlation appeared to be due to decreasing activation during survey encoding and not activation changes during route learning. The results suggest that mental rotation skill contributes to survey or map learning but that alternative strategies can be used under the circumstances of this study to achieve equal performance. Font-specificity in visual word-stem completion priming was examined in patients with global amnesia and Patient M.S., who had a right-occipital lobectomy. Word-stems appeared in the same or different font as study words. Amnesic patients showed normal font-specific priming (greater priming for words studied in the same than different font as test), despite impaired word-stem cued recall. Patient M.S. failed to exhibit font-specific priming, despite preserved declarative memory. Therefore, perceptual specificity in visual priming depends on visual processes mediated by the right-occipital lobe rather than medial temporal and diencephalic regions involved in declarative memory. Working memory and its contribution to performance on strategic memory tests in schizophrenia were studied. Patients (n?=?18) and control participants (n?=?15), all men, received tests of immediate memory (forward digit span), working memory (listening, computation, and backward digit span), and long-term strategic (free recall, temporal order, and self-ordered pointing) and nonstrategic (recognition) memory. Schizophrenia patients performed worse on all tests. Education, verbal intelligence, and immediate memory capacity did not account for deficits in working memory in schizophrenia patients. Reduced working memory capacity accounted for group differences in strategic memory but not in recognition memory. Working memory impairment may be central to the profile of impaired cognitive performance in schizophrenia and is consistent with hypothesized frontal lobe dysfunction associated with this disease.
