The inflammatory effects of carbon nanoparticles (NPs) are highly disputed. Here it is demonstrated that endotoxin‐free preparations of raw carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are very limited in their capacity to promote inflammatory responses in vitro, as well as in vivo. Upon purification and selective oxidation of raw CNTs, a higher dispersibility is achieved in physiological solutions, but this process also enhances their inflammatory activity. In synergy with toll‐like receptor (TLR) ligands, CNTs promote NLRP3 inflammasome activation and it is shown for the first time that this property extends to spherical carbon nano‐onions (CNOs) of 6 nm in size. In contrast, the benzoic acid functionalization of purified CNTs and CNOs leads to significantly attenuated inflammatory properties. This is evidenced by a reduced secretion of the inflammatory cytokine IL‐1β, and a pronounced decrease in the recruitment of neutrophils and monocytes following injection into mice. Collectively, these results reveal that the inflammatory properties of carbon NPs are highly dependent on their physicochemical characteristics and crucially, that chemical surface functionalization allows significant moderation of these properties.  相似文献

Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the causative agent of listeriosis, in food processing facilities presents considerable challenges to food producers and food safety authorities. Design of an effective, risk‐based environmental monitoring (EM) program is essential for finding and eliminating Lm from the processing environment to prevent product contamination. A scoping review was conducted to collate and synthesize available research and guidance materials on Listeria EM in food processing facilities. An exhaustive search was performed to identify all available research, industry and regulatory documents, and search results were screened for relevance based on eligibility criteria. After screening, 198 references were subjected to an in‐depth review and categorized according to objectives for conducting Listeria sampling in food processing facilities and food sector. Mapping of the literature revealed research and guidance gaps by food sector, as fresh produce was the focus in only 10 references, compared to 72 on meat, 52 on fish and seafood, and 50 on dairy. Review of reported practices and guidance highlighted key design elements of EM, including the number, location, timing and frequency of sampling, as well as methods of detection and confirmation, and record‐keeping. While utilization of molecular subtyping methods is a trend that will continue to advance understanding of Listeria contamination risks, improved study design and reporting standards by researchers will be essential to assist the food industry optimize their EM design and decision‐making. The comprehensive collection of documents identified and synthesized in this review aids continued efforts to minimize the risk of Lm contaminated foods.  相似文献

C-reactive protein (CRP) levels predict coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Levels are raised among smokers, but the effect of smoking cessation is unclear. Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) may be a confounder. Lifetime smoking exposure may have a dose effect on CRP among smokers, but it is unclear if this persists after cessation. We analyzed cross-sectional data on 4,072 adults recruited to a Scotland-wide population health survey who did not have CHD and were not on nicotine replacement therapy. CRP fell with time from cessation but was still raised up to 5 years after adjustment for case-mix (p<.001). SHS exposure was greater among ex-smokers than never-smokers (median cotinine 0.5 ng/ml vs. 0.4 ng/ml, p<.001) but did not explain the difference. Among smokers, there was a dose relationship between pack years and CRP on both univariate, F(4,1279) = 31.841, p<.001, and multivariate, F(4,1085) = 3.499, p = .008, analysis. Among ex-smokers there was also a dose relationship between pack-years and CRP, F(4,751) = 14.108, p<.001, which was independent of time from cessation and case-mix, F(4,466) = 3.744, p = .005. That CRP does not fall to normal levels immediately and that lifetime smoking exposure continues to impact on CRP levels post cessation suggest that CRP is not raised as a direct effect of cigarette smoke but rather via a secondary mechanism, such as tissue damage causing an inflammatory stimulus. Our results reinforce the need to encourage smoking cessation as early as possible.  相似文献

The praseodymium nickelate oxide Pr2NiO4+δ, a mixed conducting oxide with the K2NiF4-type structure, was evaluated as cathode for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (T = 873 K). The electrochemical performance of the cathode has been improved by optimization of the microstructure of the porous cathode combined with the use of a ceria barrier layer in between the cathode and zirconia electrolyte. Both low polarization and ohmic resistances were obtained using Pr2NiO4+δ-powders with a median particle size of 0.4 μm, and sintering the screen printed layer at a sintering temperature of about 1353 K for 1 h. These manufacturing conditions resulted in a cathode microstructure with well established connections between the cathode particles and good adhesion of the cathode on the electrolyte. Full-sized anode supported cells have been manufactured using the same process conditions for the Pr2NiO4+δ cathode and tested. The best results were obtained when using a dense Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 (20CGO) barrier layer. While a complete optimization of the cell preparation has not yet been achieved, the electrochemical performances of anode supported cells with Pr2NiO4+δ are higher than those with the well known state-of-the-art La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3−δ (LSFC) material.  相似文献

Palaeoenvironmental research in the Southern Levant presents a series of challenges, partly due to the unequal distribution of palaeoenvironmental records and potential archives throughout the region. Our knowledge of climatic evolution, during the last approximately 25,000 years, is of crucial importance to understand cultural developments. More local, well-dated, multi-proxy studies are much needed to obtain an accurate picture of environmental change in respect of the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene. This contribution reviews the current state of knowledge regarding Late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental changes in the Southern Levant, including some examples of more recent developments in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction in Israel and the Dead Sea area, and introduces the major challenges researchers face in the region. It also presents the first results of a new case study in Jordan, based on an analysis of peaty deposits located in the mountain slopes east of the Dead Sea. Such new studies help refine our knowledge of local environmental changes in the Southern Levant and especially the more arid areas, for which little information is presently available. More material suitable for palaeoenvironmental research, for example extensive tufa and travertine series, still awaits consideration in Jordan, opening up exciting perspectives for future research in the area.  相似文献

Guavas cv. ‘Kumagai’ were packed in several plastic materials and stored at 10°C and 85–90% relative humidity (RH) for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days (+3 days at 25°C). The plastic materials studied were: multilayer co‐extruded polyolephine film with selective permeability (PSP), low‐density polyethylene film (LDPE), LDPE film with mineral incorporation (LDPEm) and heat‐shrinkable polyolephine film (SHR). Guavas not packed were taken as control samples. The physicochemical characteristics of the fruits, O2 and CO2 transmission rates of the packaging materials and gas composition at the package headspace were evaluated. The LDPE film, 69 µm in thickness, with the lowest permeability to both O2 and CO2, led to anaerobiosis and high CO2 concentration inside the packages and promoted physiological disturbances and changes in fruit flavour. The SHR film, 15 µm in thickness, was the most permeable to CO2 and had quite high O2 transmission, which modified the inner atmosphere of the packages slightly. The fruits packed in this film showed a poorer quality than the controls, possibly due to the heat produced during the shrinking of the film. The LDPEm film, 24 µm in thickness, was almost as permeable to CO2 but had reduced O2 transmission, promoting an atmosphere of equilibrium of 3% O2 and 4.5% CO2. Fruits packed in this film kept their skin colour and pulp firmness, suitable for consumption up to 14 days. The PSP film, 35 µm in thickness, had the greatest O2 transmission but just over half of the CO2 transmission of LDPEm, promoting an atmosphere of equilibrium of 0.5% O2 and 4.5% CO2 inside the packages. This paper describes the development of an analyser intended to measure the concentrations of CO2 and O2 present as part of the gas mixture in the head‐space of food packages. The efficiency of the measuring device was evaluated by analysing the atmosphere of packages containing the following food products: grated Parmesan cheese, milk powder and fresh pasta. A comparison between the results of the analysis performed with the newly developed analyser and those obtained by gas chromatography showed good correlation between the two methods. The O2 and CO2 analyser presented satisfactory accuracy (absolute error smaller than 2.5%, v/v) and precision (relative standard deviation varying from 0.2% to 8.5%). In addition, final results of the levels of both gas types present in the atmosphere submitted to analysis are obtained after about 2 min. The proposed analyser constitutes an alternative solution for the analysis of gases present in the head‐space of packages, especially when gas samples of very small volumes—about 200 μl—are to be used. This study compares and evaluates the mechanical performance of two types of PET bottle of different nominal weights but identical design and filled with 900 ml vegetable cooking oil. The air in the headspace of all the bottles was replaced with liquid or gaseous nitrogen upon conclusion of the filling operation and immediately before capping. Two different closures, with an internal or external tamper‐evident feature, were used on the 20 g bottles. The 27 g bottle was closed exclusively with the closure fitted with an external seal. The 20 g PET bottles prior to capping were either flushed with gaseous nitrogen or pressurized with liquid nitrogen. The air contained in the headspace of the 27 g bottle was removed by injection of gaseous nitrogen only. Corrugated fibreboard cases containing 20 bottles each were submitted to a vibration test and all the components of the packaging system were subsequently evaluated with respect to important mechanical properties, such as stacking strength, drop impact strength and package integrity. The results show that the closure with external seal provided considerably better protection against leakage. Also tests conducted with stacks of five corrugated cases each and arranged onto two pallets placed one upon the other demonstrated that reducing total bottle weight by 26% is viable in terms of mechanical performance. We describe a framework for analyzing probabilistic reachability and safety problems for discrete time stochastic hybrid systems within a dynamic games setting. In particular, we consider finite horizon zero-sum stochastic games in which a control has the objective of reaching a target set while avoiding an unsafe set in the hybrid state space, and a rational adversary has the opposing objective. We derive an algorithm for computing the maximal probability of achieving the control objective, subject to the worst-case adversary behavior. From this algorithm, sufficient conditions of optimality are also derived for the synthesis of optimal control policies and worst-case disturbance strategies. These results are then specialized to the safety problem, in which the control objective is to remain within a safe set. We illustrate our modeling framework and computational approach using both a tutorial example with jump Markov dynamics and a practical application in the domain of air traffic management.  相似文献

Pulse crops have received growing attention from the agri-food sector because they can provide advantageous health benefits and offer a promising source of starch and protein. Pea, lentil, and faba bean are the three leading pulse crops utilized for extracting protein concentrate/isolate in food industry, which simultaneously generates a rising volume of pulse starch as a co-product. Pulse starch can be fractionated from seeds using dry and wet methods. Compared with most commercial starches, pea, lentil, and faba bean starches have relatively high amylose contents, longer amylopectin branch chains, and characteristic C-type polymorphic arrangement in the granules. The described molecular and granular structures of the pulse starches impart unique functional attributes, including high final viscosity during pasting, strong gelling property, and relatively low digestibility in a granular form. Starch isolated from wrinkled pea—a high-amylose mutant of this pulse crop—possesses an even higher amylose content and longer branch chains of amylopectin than smooth pea, lentil, and faba bean starches, which make the physicochemical properties and digestibility of the former distinctively different from those of common pulse starches. The special functional properties of pulse starches promote their applications in food, feed, bioplastic and other industrial products, which can be further expanded by modifying them through chemical, physical and/or enzymatic approaches. Future research directions to increase the fractionation efficiency, improve the physicochemical properties, and enhance the industrial utilization of pulse starches have also been proposed. The comprehensive information covered in this review will be beneficial for the pulse industry to develop effective strategies to generate value from pulse starch.  相似文献
