NEW RAPID METHODS FOR MOISTURE AND FAT ANALYSIS: A REVIEW

Methodology for rapid moisture and fat analysis in food products has advanced. There are new systems on the market using microwaves, nuclear magnetic resonance, electro-optical scanners, or measuring differential capacitance; near infrared transmittance, reflectance or absorbance; or specific gravity of a solvent-sample mixture. Some of these systems offer rapid, accurate, and repeatable measurements.     

Radiation Effects on the Physical Properties of Low-Expansion-Coefficient Glasses and Ceramics

The effects of irradiation on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), the density, and the elastic moduli of low-CTE materials such as amorphous SiO₂, ultra-low-expansion glass, β-SiC, Astrositall, and Zerodur were surveyed. It was found that the properties of all of these materials were affected by radiation exposures up to 2 × 10⁹ rd; SiO₂ and SiC were the most radiation-resistant of the materials studied.     

CONTRIBUTIONS OF PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES TO ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT POTENTIAL.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES TO ASSESSMENT-CENTER STAFF EVALUATIONS AND THE RELATIONSHIPS OF PROJECTIVE VARIABLES TO PROGRESS IN MANAGEMENT ARE PRESENTED. THE PROJECTIVE DATA WERE OBTAINED BY CODING REPORTS WRITTEN BY A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST FROM 3 PROJECTIVE INSTRUMENTS. ANALYSES OF THE DATA SHOW THAT THE PROJECTIVE REPORTS PARTICULARLY INFLUENCED THE ASSESSMENT STAFF IN RATING SUCH CHARACTERISTICS AS WORK MOTIVATION, PASSIVITY, AND DEPENDENCY. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL OF THE PROJECTIVE VARIABLES ARE RELIABLY RELATED TO PROGRESS IN MANAGEMENT, ESPECIALLY THOSE PERTAINING TO LEADERSHIP AND ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION. RESPONSE TENDENCIES IN THE SVIB: THE POPULAR, THE RARE, AND THE SOCIALLY DESIRABLE.

A NUMBER OF RESPONSE SETS- POPULAR, RARE, SOCIALLY DESIRABLE, LIKING, AND INDIFFERENCE-WERE EXAMINED FOR THEIR CORRELATIONS WITH EACH OTHER AND PERSONALITY SOCIAL DESIRABILITY (SD), AND FOR THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE SCALES OF THE SVIB-M. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE SCALE OF SD FORMED FROM PERSONALITY ITEMS IS INDEPENDENT OF SOCIALLY DESIRABLE INTEREST SCALES, AND THAT THE LATTER VARY MORE FREELY FROM ITEM PROBABILITY OF ENDORSEMENT. CERTAIN OF THE SCALES FOR WHICH THE SVIB IS SCORED VARY FAIRLY DIRECTLY WITH 1 OR MORE RESPONSE TENDENCIES. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE FINDINGS FOR INTERPRETATION OF THE PROFILE SHEET IS DISCUSSED. Behavior of Bubbles in Glassmelts: I, Dissolution of a Stationary Bubble Containing a Single Gas

The quasi-stationary approximation was used to calculate the rates of dissolution of O₂ and CO₂ gas bubbles from a soda-lime glassmelt. An analytic expression for the bubble radius as a function of time, R(t) , was obtained when surface tension was neglected and numerical results for R(t) were found when surface-tension effects were included. These results were compared with those found by previous investigators. Also, an asymptotic expression for R (t) was derived and used to calculate bubble dissolution times.     

Evaporation of Hypostoichiometric Plutonium Dioxide from 2070° to 2380°K

Total vapor pressures of PuO_2-x, compositions were measured gravimetrically with tungsten Knudsen cells from 2070° to 2380°K. The vapor pressure equation for the composition approximating the congruent one, PuO_1.82, is    
where P_c, is the pressure if the vapor is assumed to be entirely PuO₂(g). The evaporation of PuO_1.562 was univari-ant, indicating the presence of two condensed phases, and that of PuO_1.62 was bivariant from 2240° to 2380°K; this result confirms that the phase boundary of the PuO_2-x, phase remains at Pu_1.61 at temperatures close to the liquidus.
