Biological treatment plants are frequently used to degrade organic substances in wastewater from wood refinement processes. Aeration ponds in such plants provide an optimal growth environment for many microorganisms, including Legionella species. To investigate whether legionellae could be dispersed as aerosols from the ponds and transported by the wind, the wetted-wall cyclone SASS 2000(PLUS) and the impactors MAS-100 and STA-204 were used to collect air samples directly above, upwind, and downwind of aeration ponds during a 4-month period. Computational fluid dynamics was used a priori to estimate the aerosol paths and to determine suitable air-sampling locations. Several Legionella species, including Legionella pneumophila, were identified in air samples at the biological treatment plant using microbiological and molecular methods. L. pneumophila was identified up to distances of 200 m downwind from the ponds, but, in general, not upwind nor outside the predicted aerosol paths. The highest concentration level of viable legionellae was identified directly above the aeration ponds (3300 CFU/m3). This level decreased as the distance from the aeration ponds increased. Molecular typing indicated that a single clone of L. pneumophila was dispersed from the ponds during the period of the study. Thus, our study demonstrated that aerosols generated at aeration ponds of biological treatment facilities may contain L. pneumophila, which then can be transported by the wind to the surroundings. The methods used in this study may be generically applied to trace biological aerosols that may pose a challenge to environmental occupational health.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Olive trees are generally grown under rain‐fed conditions. Since yield response to application of water in the growing season may be considerable, irrigation is increasingly introduced to existing, mature orchards. An additional feature of modernization of olive cultivation is mechanical harvesting. To investigate the effect of irrigation level on the quality of virgin olive oil (VOO) produced from cv. Souri, six regimes, ranging from deficit to excess, were applied to trees in a mature, traditional orchard as it was converted to irrigation. Furthermore, in order to investigate the effect of damage incurred during harvest, oil quality of hand‐picked fruit was compared to that of mechanically harvested olives. RESULTS: Data were collected from two consecutive growing seasons. Increased irrigation quantity increased the free acidity level of the oil and decreased the total phenol content of VOO, while the peroxide level of the oil was not affected. Oil of hand‐picked fruits had lower free acidity, higher polyphenol content and slightly lower peroxide level compared to the oil of mechanically harvested olives. CONCLUSION: Fruits from irrigated trees demonstrated an apparent sensitivity to mechanical wounding that subsequently led to increased free acidity, increased peroxide level and decreased total phenol content in oil. Management of irrigated orchards including method and timing of harvest and oil extraction techniques should consider these results in order to optimize production of high‐quality oil. Energy supply companies and industrial plants are likely to face new situations due to, for example, the introduction of new energy legislation, increased fuel prices and increased environmental awareness. These new prerequisites provide companies with new challenges but also new possibilities from which to benefit. Increased energy efficiency within companies and increased cooperation between different operators are two alternatives to meet the new conditions. A region characterized by a high density of energy-intensive processes is used in this study to find the economic potential of connecting three industrial plants and four energy companies, within three local district heating systems, to a regional heat market, in which different operators provide heat to a joint district heating grid. Also, different investment alternatives are studied. The results show that the economical potential for a heat market amounts to between 5 and 26 million EUR/year with payback times ranging from two to eleven years. However, the investment costs and the net benefit for the total system need to be allotted to the different operators, as they benefit economically to different extents from the introduction of a heat market. It is also shown that the emissions of CO2 from the joint system would decrease compared to separate operation of the systems. However, the valuation of CO2 emissions from electricity production is important as the difference of emitted CO2 between the accounting methods exceeds 650 kton/year for some scenarios.  相似文献

Soil samples were screened for microorganisms selectively transforming FA. One of the isolated strains was identified as the bacterium Stenotrophomonas maltophilia by its phenotypic features and genotypic characterization by sequencing the ribosomal RNA gene. Using linoleic acid as substrate resulted in the formation of two major compounds. After liquid chromatographic isolation and separation, their structures were elucidated by HPLC-tandem MS, GC-MS, and NMR techniques to be 3-hydroxy-Z6-dodecenoic acid and 3-hydroxy-Z5, Z8-tetradecadienoic acid. In additional experiments, other FA, such as α-linolenic, oleic, palmitoleic, myristoleic, and cis-vaccenic acids, were converted to 3-hydroxylated metabolites of shorter chain lengths as well. Determination of the enantiomeric composition revealed highly enriched (R)-hydroxylation (88–98% enantiomeric excess).  相似文献

In some wheat growing countries, considerable quantities of commercial wheat are rendered unusable in standard milling because of pre-harvest damage of the grain by protease-injecting insects. The possibility of mitigating the detrimental effects of bug damage by eliminating the mill streams of lower quality from straight run flour was investigated. The changes in the amount of damaged kernels by cleaning and washing prior to milling were also examined. Dry cleaning decreased the level of insect damage from 26.4% to 23.0%. A further improvement to 12.8% was obtained by removing the light-density bug-damaged kernels by washing. There were substantial differences among the mill streams of the commercial mill as evaluated by the standard and modified sedimentation tests and standard alveograph test. The best streams were those from the first, second, third and fourth reductions.  相似文献

Productivity research has focused on simple jobs with the individual as the unit of analysis. Most jobs are more complex and, because of the interdependencies in the work, require group-level interventions and more complex measures of performance or productivity. This research presents a new method of measuring productivity, the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System (ProMES), and uses measures from this approach as a foundation for group-based feedback, goal setting, and incentives. The experimental design consisted of a baseline period of 8 to 9 months, followed by a 5-month period of feedback based on the ProMES. Goal setting was then added to feedback for 5 months. Finally, incentives in the form of time off from work were added to feedback and goal setting for another 5 months. Results indicated that group-level feedback increased productivity an average of 50% over baseline, group goal setting increased productivity 75% over baseline, and group incentives increased productivity 76% over baseline. Control group data showed no or only a slight increase in productivity over the same period, and level of personnel either stayed the same or decreased. In addition, work attitudes such as job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and morale were as good or better following the interventions. Abstract. We consider time series models obtained by replacing the parameters of autoregressive models by stochastic processes. Special attention is given to the problem of finding conditions for stationarity and to the problem of forecasting. For the first problem we are only able to obtain solutions in special cases, and the emphasis is on techniques rather than obtaining the most general results in each case. For the second problem more complete results are obtained by exploiting similarities with discrete time (nonlinear) filtering theory. The methods introduced are illustrated on two standard examples, one of state space type and one where the parameter process is a Markov chain.  相似文献

Abstract. We study nonstationary autoregressive time series where the variance of the residual process is allowed to depend on time. In earlier publications the variance has been modelled by a step function. We look at more general classes of functions and propose two estimates of the autoregressive coefficients, both of which are consistent under weak assumptions. We also show how it is possible to obtain an estimate in practice using an iterative regression procedure.  相似文献

Abstract. In the univariate case the problem of empirical identification consists in determining the order parameters p , d and q of ARIMA ( p, d, q ) processes. In this paper we introduce some new techniques for handling the corresponding problem for a multiple time series X ( t ) with the main emphasis on AR and MA models. Types of joint nonstationarity (or rather almost nonstationarity) are defined and a method of analyzing such structures based on the ordered eigenvalues of the function C ( t ) = K ( t ) K -1(0) is discussed, where K ( t ) is the covariance function of X ( t ). It is proposed that the further identification procedure should be based on two X 2 statistics and on the estimated trace and eigenvalues of C ( t ), the matrix correlation function p ( t ) and the matrix partial correlation function P ( t ). The suitability for identification purposes of each of these functions is examined in terms of such properties as scale-invariance, existence of normalized eigenvalues and standard errors. The methods introduced are illustrated on a 5-dimensional economic time series first studied by Quenouille and on a 4-dimensional smulated MA series.  相似文献

If empirical software engineering is to grow as a valid scientific endeavor, the ability to acquire, use, share, and compare data collected from a variety of sources must be encouraged. This is necessary to validate the formal models being developed within computer science. However, within the empirical software engineering community this has not been easily accomplished. This paper analyses experiences from a number of projects, and defines the issues, which include the following: (1) How should data, testbeds, and artifacts be shared? (2) What limits should be placed on who can use them and how? How does one limit potential misuse? (3) What is the appropriate way to credit the organization and individual that spent the effort collecting the data, developing the testbed, and building the artifact? (4) Once shared, who owns the evolved asset? As a solution to these issues, the paper proposes a framework for an empirical software engineering artifact agreement. Such an agreement is intended to address the needs for both creator and user of such artifacts and should foster a market in making available and using such artifacts. If this framework for sharing software engineering artifacts is commonly accepted, it should encourage artifact owners to make the artifacts accessible to others (gaining credit is more likely and misuse is less likely). It may be easier for other researchers to request artifacts since there will be a well-defined protocol for how to deal with relevant matters.  相似文献
