Polymers of N-substituted glycines ("peptoids") containing chiral centers at the alpha position of their side chains can form stable structures in solution. We studied a prototypical peptoid, consisting of five para-substituted (S)-N-(1-phenylethyl)glycine residues, by NMR spectroscopy. Multiple configurational isomers were observed, but because of extensive signal overlap, only the major isomer containing all cis-amide bonds was examined in detail. The NMR data for this molecule, in conjunction with previous CD spectroscopic results, indicate that the major species in methanol is a right-handed helix with cis-amide bonds. The periodicity of the helix is three residues per turn, with a pitch of approximately 6 A. This conformation is similar to that anticipated by computational studies of a chiral peptoid octamer. The helical repeat orients the amide bond chromophores in a manner consistent with the intensity of the CD signal exhibited by this molecule. Many other chiral polypeptoids have similar CD spectra, suggesting that a whole family of peptoids containing chiral side chains is capable of adopting this secondary structure motif. Taken together, our experimental and theoretical studies of the structural properties of chiral peptoids lay the groundwork for the rational design of more complex polypeptoid molecules, with a variety of applications, ranging from nanostructures to nonviral gene delivery systems.  相似文献

Most verification approaches assume a mathematical formalism in which functions are total, even though partial functions occur naturally in many applications. Furthermore, although there have been various proposals for logics of partial functions, there is no consensus on which is “the right” logic to use for verification applications. In this paper, we propose using a three-valued Kleene logic, where partial functions return the “undefined” value when applied outside of their domains. The particular semantics are chosen according to the principle of least surprise to the user; if there is disagreement among the various approaches on what the value of the formula should be, its evaluation is undefined. We show that the problem of checking validity in the three-valued logic can be reduced to checking validity in a standard two-valued logic, and describe how this approach has been successfully implemented in our tool, CVC Lite.  相似文献

Symbolic Model Checking extends the scope of verification algorithms that can be handled automatically, by using symbolic representations rather than explicitly searching the entire state space of the model. However even the most sophisticated symbolic methods cannot be directly applied to many of today's large designs because of the state explosion problem. Approximate symbolic model checking is an attempt to trade off accuracy with the capacity to deal with bigger designs. This paper explores the idea of using overlapping projections as the underlying approximation scheme. The idea is evaluated by applying it to several modules from the I/O unit in the Stanford FLASH Multiprocessor, and some larger circuits in ISCAS89 benchmark suite.  相似文献

Plant extracts have been proposed as substitutes for chemical feed additives due to their potential as rumen fermentation modifiers and because of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, possibly reducing methane emissions. This study aimed to evaluate the use of oregano (OR), green tea extracts (GT), and their association as feed additives on the performance and methane emissions from dairy between 28 and 87 d of lactation. Thirty-two lactating dairy cows, blocked into 2 genetic groups: 16 Holstein cows and 16 crossbred Holstein-Gir, with 522.6 ± 58.3 kg of body weight, 57.2 ± 20.9 d in lactation, producing 27.5 ± 5.0 kg/cow of milk and with 3.1 ± 1.8 lactations were evaluated (means ± standard error of the means). Cows were allocated into 4 treatments: control (CON), without plant extracts in the diet; oregano extract (OR), with the addition of 0.056% of oregano extract in the dry matter (DM) of the diet; green tea (GT), with the addition of 0.028% of green tea extract in the DM of the diet; and mixture, with the addition of 0.056% oregano extract and 0.028% green tea extract in the DM of the diet. The forage-to-concentrate ratio was 60:40. Forage was composed of corn silage (94%) and Tifton hay (6%); concentrate was based on ground corn and soybean meal. Plant extracts were supplied as powder, which was previously added and homogenized into 1 kg of concentrate in natural matter, top-dressed onto the total mixed diet. No treatment by day interaction was observed for any of the evaluated variables, but some block by treatment interactions were significant. In Holstein cows, the mixture treatment decreased gross energy and tended to decrease the total-tract apparent digestibility coefficient for crude protein and total digestible nutrients when compared with OR. During the gas measurement period, GT and OR increased the digestible fraction of the ingested DM and decreased CH4 expressed in grams per kilogram of digestible DMI compared with CON. The use of extracts did not change rumen pH, total volatile fatty acid concentration, milk yield, or most milk traits. Compared with CON, oregano addition decreased fat concentration in milk. The use of plant extracts altered some milk fatty acids but did not change milk fatty acids grouped according to chain length (short or long), saturation (unsaturated or saturated), total conjugated linoleic acids, and n-3 and n-6 contents. Green tea and oregano fed separately reduced gas emission in cows during the first third of lactation and have potential to be used as feed additives for dairy cows.  相似文献

A 12-month field study was conducted consecutively from June 2003 to May 2004 to quantify temporal variations of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) concentrations in Cane Creek Lake, a southern reservoir lake (Cookeville, TN). Diurnal changes of DGM concentrations in two periods (morning increase vs afternoon decrease with an around-noon peak) were observed, and the changes closely followed daily solar radiation variation trends. The diurnal patterns prevailed in the late spring and summer, but became vague in the late fall and winter. The monthly mean DGM concentrations peaked at 40.8 pg L(-1) in July and reached the lowest at 14.2 pg L(-1) in December and 21.9 pg L(-1) in January; this DGM concentration change closely followed the monthly mean solar radiation variation trend. The increase of the lake DGM concentration from January to July and its decrease from July to December mirror the typical daily rhythm of DGM concentration variations in the two periods. This finding supports the following hypothesis: The natural phenomenon of daily oscillation of freshwater DGM concentrations that follows diurnal solar radiation variation would manifest on a seasonal scale. High DGM concentrations were found in the spring and summer and low in the fall and winter (seasonal mean: 34.2, 37.5, 20.0, 24.4 pg L(-1), respectively). This seems to suggest an annual occurrence of two periods of the seasonal DGM level fluctuation (spring and summer high vs fall and winter low DGM levels). Linear relationships of the monthly mean DGM concentrations were found with the monthly mean global solar radiation (R2 = 0.82, P < 0.05) and UVA radiation (R2 = 0.84, P < 0.05). Linear relationships of the seasonal mean DGM concentrations were also found with the seasonal mean global solar radiation (R2 = 0.85, P = 0.08) and UVA radiation (R2 = 0.93, P < 0.05).  相似文献

The properties of silicon implanted with boron ions through thermal SiO2 films were studied using sheet resistivity measurements (corroborated by Hall data). Electrical properties for implants through 0.1 μm of SiO2, as compared to bare silicon, showed no unusual behavior as a function of anneal temperature. Sheet resistivity measurements as a function of SiO2 thickness for fixed ion energy, and as a function of energy for fixed oxide thickness were made after 525 and 925°C anneals, for boron doses of 1013, 1014 and 1015 ions/cm2. The profile of boron ions in SiO2 is near Gaussian for the energy range investigated and the stopping power is 0 to 20% lower than the theoretical value currently in the literature. Considerations for device manufacture are discussed in light of the results.  相似文献

Uniform dispersions of high-molecular-weight poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) in a matrix of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) are prepared where the degree of crosslinking in the elastomer and its extent of grafting to the SAN matrix are controlled. This gives an impact resistant plastic at ambient and low temperatures which is resistant to outdoor exposure. The Tg of PDMS is shown to be greatly reduced when grafted to the SAN matrix. Plots of impact resistance versus shift factor aT of the elastomer added for toughening coincide for PDMS and polybutadiene over a 150°C temperature range.  相似文献

A highly virulent strain of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus produced less severe histopathologic changes in brain tissues of mice previously exposed to sublethal total-body x-irradiation than it caused in nonirradiated mice. Prior exposure to 600 R of x-irradiation virtually eliminated the lesions of vasculitis and encephalitis that were found in the infected nonirradiated control mice. Mean peak brain lesion scores generally decreased as radiation exposure dose was increased. Irradiation of mice before inoculation often decreased median time to death, whereas the severity of pathologic changes in brain tissues from inoculated irradiated mice was often reduced, without significantly altering ultimate host survival. The inflammatory response did not appear to have a significant role in clearance of this virus from the brain. There was no evidence that participation of the immune response contributed to total mortality from VEE virus encephalitis, as indicated by the failure of radiation immunosuppression to reduce mortality. Death apparently was caused by the direct cytocidal effects of VEE virus replication.  相似文献
