Application of Work-of-sintering concepts in powder metals

One of the current challenges facing the particulate materials industry is developing simple, accurate models to predict sintered properties. Work-of-sintering concepts, where time-temperature integrals are used in such models, offer a solution to this problem. In this study, the master sintering curve concept is applied to several powder metal systems: 17 to 4PH stainless steel, 316L stainless steel, nickel, niobium, tungsten heavy alloys with two different compositions, and molybdenum. A detailed explanation of the construction of these curves is given, including methods used to calculate the apparent activation energy for sintering and to curve-fit experimental data to a sigmoid function describing the master sintering curve. Discussion of the results shows that the master sintering curve can be applied to powder metal systems, even those that use liquid phase during sintering.     

Design of an integrating cavity absorption meter

The design of integrating cavity absorption meters of general geometry is analyzed for cases in which the incident illumination of the cavity is spatially uniform and isotropic, such as the meter of Fry et al. [Appl. Opt. 31, 2055 (1992)]. The analysis by Kirk [Appl. Opt. 34, 4397 (1995)] for the probability of photon survival in a spherical meter is extended to general geometries. An estimate of the effect of the shape of the cavity on the estimated absorption coefficient is given.     

Development of orally active oxytocin antagonists: studies on 1-(1-[4-[1-(2-methyl-1-oxidopyridin-3-ylmethyl)piperidin-4-yloxy]-2- methoxybenzoyl]piperidin-4-yl)-1,4-dihydrobenz[d][1,3]oxazin-2-one (L-372,662) and related pyridines

The previously reported oxytocin antagonist L-371,257 (2) has been modified at its acetylpiperidine terminus to incorporate various pyridine N-oxide groups. This modification has led to the identification of compounds with improved pharmacokinetics and excellent oral bioavailability. The pyridine N-oxide series is exemplified by L-372,662 (30), which possessed good potency in vitro (Ki = 4.1 nM, cloned human oxytocin receptor) and in vivo (intravenous AD50 = 0.71 mg/kg in the rat), excellent oral bioavailability (90% in the rat, 96% in the dog), good aqueous solubility (>8.5 mg/mL at pH 5.2) which should facilitate formulation for iv administration, and excellent selectivity against the human arginine vasopressin receptors. Incorporation of a 5-fluoro substituent on the central benzoyl ring of this class of oxytocin antagonists enhanced in vitro and in vivo potency but was detrimental to the pharmacokinetic profiles of these compounds. Although lipophilic substitution around the pyridine ring of compound 30 gave higher affinity in vitro, such substituents were a metabolic liability and caused shortfalls in vivo. Two approaches to prevent this metabolism, addition of a cyclic constraint and incorporation of trifluoromethyl groups, were examined. The former approach was ineffective because of metabolic hydroxylation on the constrained ring system, whereas the latter showed improvement in plasma pharmacokinetics in some cases.     

A P1-based physical map of the region from D17S776 to D17S78 containing the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1

BRCA1, a breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility locus, has been isolated and maps to 17q21. A physical map of the BRCA1 region which extended from the proximal boundary at D17S776 to the distal boundary at D17S78 was constructed and consists of 51 sequence tagged sites (STSs) from P1 and YAC ends, nine new short-tandem repeat (STR) polymorphic markers, and eight identified genes. The contig, which spans the estimated 2.3 Mb region, contains 29 P1s, 11 YACs, two BACs, and one cosmid. Based on key recombinants in two linked families, BRCA1 was further localized to a region bounded by D17S1321 on the proximal side and D17S1325 on the distal side. Within this estimated 600 kb region, the contig was composed completely of P1s and BACs ordered by STS-content mapping and confirmed by DNA restriction fragment fingerprinting.     

On deceiving ourselves about deception: Reply to Rubin.

Replies to the comments of Z. Rubin (see record 1985-16257-001) on the present authors' study (see record 1984-00117-001) of the role of debriefing in ameliorating harmful effects of deception or other potentially harmful manipulations in psychology experiments. It is suggested that Rubin misunderstood the purpose of the study, which was to focus on Ss' global perceptions of their cumulative research experiences rather than the specific effects of particular kinds of experimental manipulations. Education reform: Challenges for psychology and psychologists.

National, state, and local education reform agendas have been on a fast track for more than a decade. Although some psychologists have been active in promoting psychology and psychological services in education reform initiatives, knowledge about their efforts is fragmented. In order to educate psychologists about education reform, this article highlights the impetus for the recent education reform movement, briefly reviews the latest waves of education reform, and discusses the development of the National Education Goals. Then, an argument is made for the integration of education, health, and social reform initiatives; state-level education reform principles and initiatives are highlighted, illustrated by the systemic education reform mandate in Kentucky. Next, progress toward the development and implementation of an APA-sponsored response to the National Education Goals is discussed. Finally, objectives and roles for psychologists in advancing education reform are presented, and guidelines for the education and training of future psychologists are introduced. Expansion and shrinkage of oversulphated portland cements

Expansion and shrinkage tests on mortars made from a range of cements with SO₃ contents in excess of the limits specified in BS 12 are described. The mortar specimens were cured under water from 24 hours to 7 days and then dried at 65% RH and 20°C. It is shown that there is a small range of SO₃ contents within which sharp increases in 7 day expansion occur ranging from 80 to 170 micro-strain/SO₃% and that within this small range of SO₃ contents the subsequent drying shrinkage is not adversely affected.     

Memory and aging: The role of retrieval processes.

A review of the literature demonstrates that production deficiency hypotheses are unable to account fully for the fact that older adults perform more poorly on memory tasks than young adults. The possibility is explored that age-related differences are due to changes in fundamental processes involved in retrieval of information from memory, namely, (a) utilization of contextual information and (b) activation processes occurring in semantic memory. Abusive and nonabusive parental treatment from the child's perspective.

Interviewed 14 8–14 yr old boys who had been abused by their parents and 10 nonabused counterparts. Ss' perceptions of parental characteristics, discipline techniques, and emotional acceptance/rejection were examined in addition to Ss' attributions for parental treatment. Differences between the perceptions of abused and nonabused Ss were found, and wide variation was discovered in the perceptions of abused Ss.
