A thermally compensated temperature sensor capable of highly accurate determination of surface temperatures has been demonstrated. The probe consists of a single crystal Y(3)Al(5)O(12) fiber terminating in a laser-heated Yb(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor. It has been shown to have a measurement accuracy of approximately 1 degrees C. Individual contractors exhibit different bidding behaviors when confronted with a given set of project decision environment factors, i.e., heterogeneity in the population of contractors. In examining the tenability of the bidder homogeneity assumption, a linear mixed modeling approach is applied to two data sets obtained from Hong Kong and Singapore contractors via a bidding experiment. Two linear mixed models were developed by relating the contractors’ mark-up decision to four project decision environment factors, namely, (1) market conditions; (2) number of bidders; (3) project type; and (4) project size. The results show that not only is there a significant heterogeneity between the Hong Kong and the Singapore contractors in terms of both their preferences (intercepts) and responses (slopes) to the project decision environment factors that affect their mark-up decision, but also that the individual Hong Kong and Singapore contractors have different degrees of sensitivity toward the project decision environment factors (which is reflected in the varying individual-specific intercepts and slopes). Abstract This article investigates some of the specific features involved in accommodating the idea of actual infinity as it appears in set theory. It focuses on the conceptions of two individuals with sophisticated mathematics background, as manifested in their engagement with variations of a well-known paradox: the ping-pong ball conundrum. The APOS theory is used as a framework to interpret participants’ efforts to resolve the paradoxes. The cases discussed focus on how transfinite subtraction may be conceptualized, and they suggest that there is more to accommodating the idea of actual infinity than the ability to act on a completed object—rather, it is the manner in which objects are acted upon that is also significant. 相似文献

The effects of projectile penetration into soft tissue are often studied using the tissue simulant ballistic soap. Consequently, a full understanding of the high strain-rate response of ballistic soap is desirable. Using the plate-impact technique, key shock parameters have been measured for impacts in the range 81–968 m/s, allowing derivation of the Hugoniot equation-of-state for soap in the US–uP and σX–uP planes. A polynomial Hugoniot relationship was found in the US–uP plane, with the general form US = 1.96 + 2.41uP − 0.72uP2 (ρ0 = 1.107 g/cc). Further, embedded lateral manganin stress gauges were employed to interrogate the evolution of lateral stress within the soap. A gradient in lateral stress, whose magnitude increased incrementally with impact stress, was apparent behind the shock for σX >1 GPa. It is proposed that at higher values of σX, increased compression of hydrocarbon chains acts to increase the materials resistance to shear, a phenomenon consistent with steric hindrance. 相似文献

We describe the performance of a drift tube-ion mobility spectrometry (DT-IMS) instrument for the measurement of aerosol particles. In DT-IMS, the electrical mobility of a measured particle is inferred directly from the time required for the particle to traverse a drift region, with motion driven by an electrostatic field. Electrical mobility distributions are hence linked to arrival time distributions (ATDs) for particles reaching a detector downstream of the drift region. The developed instrument addresses two obstacles that have limited DT-IMS use for aerosol measurement previously: (1) conventional drift tubes cannot efficiently sample charged particles at ground potential and (2) the sensitivities of commonly used Faraday plate detectors are too low for most aerosols. Obstacle (1) is circumvented by creating a “sample volume” of aerosol for measurement, defined by the streamlines of fluid flow. Obstacle (2) is bypassed by interfacing the end of the drift region with a condensation particle counter. The DT-IMS prototype shows high linearity for arrival time versus inverse electrical mobility (R 2 > 0.99) over the size range tested (2.2–11.1 nm), and measurements compare well with both analytical and numerical models of device performance. A dimensionless calibration curve linking drift time to inverse electrical mobility is developed. In less than 5 s, it is possible to measure 11.1 nm particles, while 2.2 nm particles are analyzable on a subsecond scale. The transmission efficiency is found to be dependent upon electrostatic deposition for short drift times and upon advective losses for long drift times.

The ingestion of dietary fibre has been correlated with the prevention of many health-threatening diseases and cancers. Plant cell walls are the major source of dietary fibre and this review investigates the relationship between the structure of different types of plant cell walls and their beneficial effects. The effects of processing and cooking on dietary fibre are also examined. Structure–function relationships between individual cell wall components and the beneficial effects of dietary fibre are not well defined and it may be that the physical, physiochemical and topochemical properties of plant cell walls and their components are also important. 相似文献
