A Fenton‐like process, involving oxidation and coagulation, was evaluated for the removal of odorous compounds and treatment of a pulp and paper wastewater. The main parameters that govern the complex reactive system [pH and Fe(III) and hydrogen peroxide concentrations] were studied. Concentrations of Fe(III) between 100 and 1000 mg L?1 and of H2O2 between 0 and 2000 mg L?1 were chosen. The main mechanism for color removal was coagulation. The maximum COD, color and aromatic compound removals were 75, 98 and 95%, respectively, under optimal operating conditions ([Fe(III)] = 400 mg L?1; [H2O2] = 500–1000 mg L?1; pH = 2.5; followed by coagulation at pH 5.0). The biodegradability of the wastewater treated increased from 0.4 to 0.7 under optimal conditions and no residual hydrogen peroxide was found after treatment. However, partially or non‐oxidized compounds present in the treated wastewater presented higher acute toxicity to Artemia salina than the untreated wastewater. Based on the optimum conditions, pilot‐scale experiments were conducted and revealed a high efficiency in relation to the mineralization of organic compounds. Terpenes [(1S)‐α‐pinene, β‐pinene, (1R)‐α‐pinene and limonene] were identified in the wastewater and were completely eliminated by the Fenton‐like treatment. We present experimental and analytical results for the pyrolysis reactions underlying the conversion of a cross-linked polymer into an amorphous ceramic material. The activation energies, obtained from thermogravimetric data, and chemical analysis of the volatiles by mass spectroscopy are used to identify the reaction pathways. The reaction is determined to be first-order, which is consistent with its solid-state nature. The magnitude of the weight loss is analyzed to calculate the number of molecular sites in the polymer that participate in the reaction. The experiments were conducted on a polymer made from silsesquioxanes that convert into silicon oxycarbide ceramics on pyrolysis. The results show that <2.5% of the silicon atoms in the polymer are removed as volatile silanes, and less than one-half of the carbon atoms are lost as methane. These results are a first step in understanding the molecular basis for the ceramic yield, as well as the evolution of the nanostructure as the material changes from an organic into a ceramic state by reactions that can occur at <850°C. 相似文献

Predicting the fate of microorganisms in the environment is increasingly warranted, especially for pathogenic strains. A major habitat of Escherichia coli, which encompasses commensal as well as pathogenic strains, is the gastrointestinal tract with conditions very different from the environment it encounters after shedding from the host or during cultivation in the laboratory. We developed two relevant growth conditions representative of intestinal (host-associated) and external (postshedding) environments to investigate the surficial properties and behaviors of a diverse subset of E. coli feedlot isolates. Surficial properties may determine an isolate's physical fate. A pronounced increase in cell hydrophobicity and concomitant biofilm mass formation was observed for isolates grown under external conditions. Isolates that exhibited the highest surface hydrophobicity also formed visible suspended aggregates under external conditions. Other than hydrophobicity, flagella-mediated motility was determinant in affecting E. coli biofilm formation under external conditions, with all four nonmotile E. coli isolates characterized as thin-biofilm formers. The majority (88%) of Ag43+ (outer membrane protein, antigen 43) isolates formed thick biofilms, whereas the majority (75%) of Ag43- isolates formed thin biofilms. The tested E. coli O157:H7 strain behaved differently from the environmental E. coli isolates: it displayed a low electrostatic charge, a small decrease in hydrophobicity upon shifts to external conditions, and very little biofilm formation. On the other hand, the commonly used laboratory strain E. coli K-12 displayed low hydrophobicity both intestinally and externally, but it formed significant biofilm mass under external conditions. Clearly, various E. coli strains manifest significant variability in surficial behavior. This variability is further modulated by growth conditions. The interacting strain-inherent and cultivation-dependent effects on surficial behavior may have broad consequences for the fate and ecology of pathogenic and commensal E. coli strains. 相似文献

A full-length cDNA, encoding a Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor (BBI), was isolated from lentil immature seeds. The deduced amino acid sequence was longer than that of the BBI extracted from lentil seeds and contained two binding sites; the first inhibitory site inhibits trypsin whereas the second one inhibits chymotrypsin. In order to characterize this lentil BBI, a longer (complete) and its C-terminally processed (mature) form were heterologously expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris. The recombinant BBI proteins proved to be active against trypsin and chymotrypsin, showing Ki values at nanomolar levels. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that complete BBI was composed of an array of molecular masses, whereas mature BBI showed the presence of a major peak of the expected size. The effects of mature BBI on the growth of human colon adenocarcinoma HT29 and colonic fibroblast CCD-18Co cells were evaluated. Lentil BBI was able to inhibit the growth of such cells at concentrations higher than 19 μM, in a concentration-dependent manner; by contrast, the CCD18-Co cells were unaffected. These data broaden our knowledge of the beneficial biological activities of naturally-occurring BBI proteins and address the need for systematic evaluation of natural variants in order to design novel strategies in preventive medicine. 相似文献

Solar plants that use molten salts as heat transfer fluid need careful control to avoid the freezing of the salt in the pipes; if such a problem occurs, a diagnostic instrument to localize where is the frozen salt plug and to determine its length is useful. If the salt contains potassium (as is the case of the most common mixture used in solar plants, NaNO3/KNO3 60/40% by weight), the gamma decay of the natural unstable isotope 40K can be exploited to detect the frozen salt in a non-invasive way. The coupling between biomass gasification and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells can represent a sustainable and efficient system for electricity production. This work aims to develop a preliminary model for the operation of a tubular, electrolyte-supported fuel cell (SOFC) fed by a syngas mixture. The fuel required by the SOFC system is produced inside the energy generator box from an integrated biomass gasification system. This study stems from the European DB-SOFC project, that proposed the exploitation of the abundant biomasses deriving from agricultural residues for energetic purposes (as from olive oil and wine production). In this study, the main processes have been simulated to find a possible configuration to obtain a power value of 200 W. 25 cells were used in the model to produce the required power. The results showed that at 0.7 V it is possible to achieve 12.3 W, when the biomass gasification was integrated into the SOFC box, while it was possible to achieve 9.6 W when the system was fed by externally produced syngas. 相似文献

The aim of this work is to experimentally and numerically analyze the performance of a integrated power plant composed by a steam oxygen fluidized bed biomass gasifier fed by woods, a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and a micro Gas Turbine (mGT). The numerical analysis is carried out by using ChemCAD software. In particular, SOFC and gasifier were modeled using proper developed Fortran subroutines interfaced to the basic software. The adopted SOFC model was already validated by the authors in previous works, while the gasifier model was here developed and validated by means of experimental activities carried out by using a bench scale gasifier. Different compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Naphthalene, Phenols) were chosen to analyze the tar evolution in the gaseous stream during the gasification process. Hot gas cleaning (based on catalytic ceramic filter candles inserted in the freeboard of the gasifier – UNIQUE concept) was adopted to remove tar and particulates from the fuel hot gas stream. Different moisture contents in the range between 10 and 30% (i.e. in a deviation of 10% around the usual wood moisture content of 20%) were numerically simulated as well as the degree of purity of the oxygen utilized in the power plant (between 25% and 95%, the rest being N2). The power requirement for pure oxygen production leads to a reduction of the electrical efficiency of the whole power plant. For this reason, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to find the optimal operation conditions in order to maximise the syngas (H2, CO) content in the produced gas, while maintaining a high overall electrical efficiency. 相似文献

The goal of this paper is to describe a method to solve a class of time optimal control problems which are equivalent to finding the sub-Riemannian minimizing geodesics on a manifold M. In particular, we assume that the manifold M is acted upon by a group G which is a symmetry group for the dynamics. The action of G on M is proper but not necessarily free. As a consequence, the orbit space M/G is not necessarily a manifold but it presents the more general structure of a stratified space. The main ingredients of the method are a reduction of the problem to the orbit space M/G and an analysis of the reachable sets on this space. We give general results relating the stratified structure of the orbit space, and its decomposition into orbit types, with the optimal synthesis. We consider in more detail the case of the so-called K?P problem where the manifold M is itself a Lie group and the group G is determined by a Cartan decomposition of M. In this case, the geodesics can be explicitly calculated and are analytic. As an illustration, we apply our method and results to the complete optimal synthesis on S O(3). 相似文献

Italy produces approximately 4,520,000 tons of pasta annually, which is about 67% of its total productive potential. As factories need electric and thermal energy simultaneously, combined heat and power (CHP) systems are the most suitable. This paper describes a feasibility study of a CHP plant in a pasta factory in Italy while analyzing energy saving and environmental benefits. Commercially available CHP systems suitable for the power range of energy demand in pasta production use reciprocating engines or gas turbines. This study demonstrates how their use can reduce both energy costs and CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emission in the environment. An economic analysis was performed following the methodology set out by Italian National Agency for Technology, Energy and Environment (ENEA) based on a discounted cash flow (DCF) method called “Valore Attuale Netto” (VAN), which uses a cash flow based on the saving of energy when using different energy processes. 相似文献
