Green nanochemistry: metal oxide nanoparticles and porous thin films from bare metal powders

A universal, simple, robust, widely applicable and cost-effective aqueous process is described for a controlled oxidative dissolution process of micrometer-sized metal powders to form high-purity aqueous dispersions of colloidally stable 3-8 nm metal oxide nanoparticles. Their utilization for making single and multilayer optically transparent high-surface-area nanoporous films is demonstrated. This facile synthesis is anticipated to find numerous applications in materials science, engineering, and nanomedicine.     

L'effet Flynn et la déficience intellectuelle.

In 1984, Flynn pointed out a 3 to 5 point increase per decade in major IQ tests in the United States. To respect the golden standard of the 100 point average and 15 point standard deviation, it became necessary to regularly restandardize the American IQ tests. In the first part of this paper we tackle three subjects: The observation of the "Flynn effect," its probable causes and its possible limit. In the second part we show that the "Flynn effect" might present a misdiagnosis risk for mental retardation when professionals use an obsolete version of an IQ test. This caveat especially applies given that the greatest risk of misdiagnosis is for borderline cases (with scores from 70 to 85). We also raise the possibility that a more complex environment due to the evolution of technologies might necessitate adjustment of the functional adaptability criteria for mental retardation. Generalization of association rules through disjunction

Several efforts were devoted to mining association rules having conjunction of items in premise and conclusion parts. Such rules convey information about the co-occurrence relations between items. However, other links amongst items—like complementary occurrence of items, absence of items, etc.—may occur and offer interesting knowledge to end-users. In this respect, looking for such relationship is a real challenge since not based on the conjunctive patterns. Indeed, catching such links requires obtaining semantically richer association rules, the generalized ones. These latter rules generalize classic ones to also offer disjunction and negation connectors between items, in addition to the conjunctive one. For this purpose, we propose in this paper a complete process for mining generalized association rules starting from an extraction context. Our experimental study stressing on the mining performances as well as the quantitative aspect proves the soundness of our proposal.     

Porous medium modeling and parameter sensitivity analysis of 1-MCP distribution in boxes with apple fruit

1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a gas used commercially in cold storage rooms to delay ripening of fruit. It is currently not known how the gas distributes in the bins and is taken up by the fruit. Here a porous-medium model is developed based on volume averaging of the transport equations of momentum and 1-MCP in the air and product. The proposed model was compared with experimental data and validated direct-CFD model. The velocity field in and around the stack were well reproduced by the porous medium model. Concentration predictions were in average 4% and maximally 7% over the average measured values. The porous medium model also agrees well with the direct-CFD model. Influential model parameters were identified through parameter sensitivity study. Porosity, skin mass transfer coefficient and specific surface area strongly affect the simulation. Accordingly model simplifications were suggested and recommended for commercial cold storage rooms.
