Phytosterols and phytostanols (PAP) compete with cholesterol absorption in the intestine, resulting in a 5–15%-reduction in plasma total and LDL cholesterol. An important issue is the PAP potential to reduce the plasma concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins and provitamin A carotenoids. Here, an update of the scientific evidence is reviewed to evaluate plant PAP-enriched foods impact on plasma fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoid levels, and to discuss potential implications in terms of cardiovascular risk. Based on 49 human interventional and 3 bioavailability studies, results showed that regular consumption, particularly over the long term, of foods fortified with PAP as recommended in labeling does not significantly impact plasma vitamins A, D, and K concentration. A 10% significant median reduction was observed for α-tocopherol. Concerning carotenoids, while 13 studies did not demonstrate statistically significant plasma β-carotene reduction, 20 studies showed significant reductions, with median effect size of ?24%. This decline can be mitigated or offset by increased fruits and vegetables consumption. Furthermore, higher cardiovascular risk was observed for differences in plasma β-carotene concentration of the same magnitude as the estimated average decrease by PAP consumption. These results are supported by the only study of β-carotene bioavailability showing decrease in absorption by phytosterols daily intake.  相似文献

Abstract.  Prediction intervals in state–space models can be obtained by assuming Gaussian innovations and using the prediction equations of the Kalman filter, with the true parameters substituted by consistent estimates. This approach has two limitations. First, it does not incorporate the uncertainty caused by parameter estimation. Second, the Gaussianity of future innovations assumption may be inaccurate. To overcome these drawbacks, Wall and Stoffer [ Journal of Time Series Analysis (2002) Vol. 23, pp. 733–751] propose a bootstrap procedure for evaluating conditional forecast errors that requires the backward representation of the model. Obtaining this representation increases the complexity of the procedure and limits its implementation to models for which it exists. In this article, we propose a bootstrap procedure for constructing prediction intervals directly for the observations, which does not need the backward representation of the model. Consequently, its application is much simpler, without losing the good behaviour of bootstrap prediction intervals. We study its finite-sample properties and compare them with those of the standard and the Wall and Stoffer procedures for the local level model. Finally, we illustrate the results by implementing the new procedure to obtain prediction intervals for future values of a real time series.  相似文献

The authors analyzed the mechanical behavior of the calf pericardium employed in the construction of valve leaflets for cardiac bioprostheses. Forty samples of pericardium were subjected to uniaxial tensile testing, 20 as controls and 20 exposed to loads increasing stepwise until rupture, with a return to zero load between each new increment. Another 20 samples were used similarly in biaxial tensile tests involving loads increasing stepwise until rupture, again returning to zero load between steps. The ultimate stresses in the uniaxial study were very similar and were not influenced by the region of pericardial tissue being tested or the increments in load to which the tissue was exposed. The mean stresses at rupture in the stepwise biaxial assays were significantly greater (p<0.01). Using morphological and mechanical criteria for sample selection, it was possible to obtain mathematical fits for the stress/strain relationship in both types of assays, with excellent coefficients of determination (R 2>0.90). In uniaxial tests in which the selection criteria were not applied, the correlation improved as the load increased, a phenomenon that did not occur in the biaxial studies. The values varied throughout the different cycles, adopting exponential forms when the strain was greatest. These variations, which demonstrate that the increase in the energy consumed is a function of the stress applied and of the strain produced, should be good parameters for assessing the changes in the collagen fiber architecture of pericardial tissue subjected to cyclic stress, and may help to detect early failure.  相似文献

Poor mechanical properties of biological tissue are known to cause wear, leading to the failure of cardiac bioprostheses made of calf pericardium. Different chemical agents such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are presently being tested as possible inhibitors of the calcification process. The objective of this report was to determine the mechanical behavior of calf pericardium treated with SDS for 24 h and the influence of the suture on the mechanical properties of the tissue. Forty-eight samples were tested: 24 subjected to a standard treatment with glutaraldehyde (12 sewn with 4/0 silk suture thread) and 24 incubated with SDS for 24 h (12 sewn with the same suture thread). Each sutured and non-sutured sample was cut into two strips to yield paired samples. All were subjected to tensile stress to breaking point. The mean stress at breaking point in the non-sutured series treated with glutaraldehyde alone was 16.42 and 13.85 MPa depending on the region of the pericardium, while in the sutured samples subjected to glutaraldehyde the mean stress was 7.50 and 7.63 MPa, respectively, differences which were statistically significant (p = 0.03 and p = 0.003, respectively) when the means for non-sutured samples from equivalent regions treated with glutaraldehyde were compared. The stress at breaking point was lower in the SDS-treated series, ranging between 2.60 and 3.56 MPa. The mathematical functions that govern the stress/strain or deformation were obtained. In the series of pericardium treated with SDS, deformations of 10% were produced with stresses of under 0.4 MPa, an outcome that is intolerable from the constructive point of view. We established a regression model that enabled us to determine the mechanical behavior of a sutured sample by testing a contiguous piece of tissue, with a high correlation coefficient (r > 0.99). We consider this finding to be of interest in the selection of pericardium for use in the construction of leaflets for cardiac bioprostheses.  相似文献

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) was evaluated as a method to predict the botanical composition of seminatural grassland in ‘dehesa’ systems. Samples of herbaceous biomass were harvested over four consecutive years, determining in each—by manual separation—the proportion by weight of the following taxonomic groups: grasses, legumes and the rest of the families in a single block (‘others’). After reconstructing the natural samples they were analysed by NIRS. One set of samples (calibration set) was selected for the development of the equations, assaying different mathematical treatments (log l/R, first derivative and second derivative). The ranges of coefficients of multiple determination and standard errors of calibration, respectively, for the various components were: grasses, 0.86 to 0.92 and 6.66 to 9.14; legumes, 0.77 to 0.81 and 6.82 to 7.43; and ‘others’, 0.85 to 0.88 and 8.17 to 9.54. The remaining samples not included in the development of the NIRS equations (prediction set) were used for the purposes of validating the best equations. Standard errors of performance were: grasses, 6.12; legumes, 7.56 and ‘others’, 7.70.  相似文献

The literature suggests that seizure disorders are associated with an increased likelihood of intellectual problems, prompting researchers to investigate risk factors of cognitive impairment in epileptic patients. This study examined the contribution of certain variables (age of seizure onset, duration, etiology, seizure location and laterality, sex, handedness, and cerebral speech pattern) to cognitive outcome in patients with medically refractory seizures. Seizure location (temporal or extratemporal), age of onset of seizures, and handedness proved to be the best indicators of general intellectual ability. There was a relatively diverse pattern of relationships when neuropsychological tests of language, visuospatial ability, and memory were considered individually. However, a factor analytic approach revealed a simpler pattern in which location of dysfunction, age at seizure onset, hand preference, cerebral speech dominance, and gender were relevant and independent indicators of verbal and nonverbal ability. Chemical analyses have been made of the heptane extractable material ofEuphorbia lathyris, a plant which has been proposed as an “energy farm” candidate. Careful selection of the biological tissue to be used in cardiac bioprostheses and a thorough knowledge of its mechanical behavior, facilitating both the prediction of this behavior and the interactions between the tissue and the other materials employed, is the best approach to designing a durable implant. For this purpose, a study involving uniaxial tensile testing of calf pericardium was carried out. Two sets of three contiguous strips of tissue were obtained from each pericardial membrane, to perform a total of 144 trials. Two samples were sewn with one of four commercially available suture materials: Gore-Tex, nylon, Prolene and silk. In each set of three samples, the center strip remained intact and unsutured to serve as a control, while the left-hand strip was sutured at a 45° angle with respect to the longitudinal axis and the right-hand strip was sewn at a 90° angle. All the samples were tested until rupture. The results demonstrated a significant loss of mean load (p<0.01) in the sutured samples at rupture. The angle of the suture had no influence on these results, although the stress/strain curves showed that, as the tensile stress increased, the mechanical behaviors were less uniform. The rupture of the collagen fibers could explain this phenomenon. The pericardium sutured with Gore-Tex presented a greater strain, or deformation (elongation), at lower levels of stress, regardless of the angle of the suture. The tissue selection criteria, based on the use of paired samples, enabled a correct prediction of the mechanical behavior of the tissue, with excellent correlation coefficients (>0.98) and a high degree of homogeneity in the results.  相似文献
