Microbial fuel cells (MFCS) can be used in wastewater treatment and to simultaneously produce electricity (renewable energy). MFC technology has already been applied successfully in lab-scale studies to treat domestic wastewater, focussing on organic matter removal and energy production. However, domestic wastewater also contains nitrogen that needs to be treated before being discharged. The goal of this paper is to assess simultaneous domestic wastewater treatment and energy production using an air-cathode MFC, paying special attention to nitrogen compound transformations. An air-cathode MFC was designed and run treating 1.39 L d(-1) of wastewater with an organic load rate of 7.2 kg COD m(-3) d(-1) (80% removal efficiency) and producing 1.42 W m(-3). In terms of nitrogen transformations, the study demonstrates that two different processes took place in the MFC: physical-chemical and biological. Nitrogen loss was observed increasing in line with the power produced. A low level of oxygen was present in the anodic compartment, and ammonium was oxidised to nitrite and nitrate.  相似文献

Human practices entail inputs of nutrients and toxicants such as heavy metals to the fluvial ecosystems. While nutrient dynamics in fluvial ecosystems have been widely studied for over three decades, dynamics of toxicants still remain unclear. In this investigation, the nutrient spiraling concept and associated methodologies to quantify nutrient retention in streams were applied to study copper (Cu) dynamics in streams. The present study aimed to quantify total dissolved Cu retention using a simplified system of indoor channels colonized with fluvial biofilms. Cu retention was studied at sub-toxic concentrations to avoid negative/lethal effects on biota. In addition, Cu retention was compared with retention estimates of a macronutrient, phosphate (PO43−), which has been widely studied within the context of the nutrient spiraling concept. The methodology used allowed a successful quantification of Cu and PO43− retention. The results showed higher retention efficiency for PO43− than for Cu. The biofilm played a key role in retaining both solutes. Although retention efficiency for both solutes was higher in the experiments with colonized substrata compared to uncolonized substrata, we found a positive relationship between uptake rate and chlorophyll-a only for PO43−. Finally, retention efficiency for both solutes was influenced by water discharge, showing lower retention efficiencies under higher flow conditions. These results suggest that the fate and toxic effects of copper on stream biota may be strongly influenced by the prevailing environmental conditions. Our results indicate that the experimental approach considered can provide new insights into the investigation of retention of toxic compounds in fluvial systems and their controlling mechanisms.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of phenolic antioxidants with a similar structure but having a different polarity in dried microencapsulated sunflower oil. The antioxidants tested were, on one hand, α-tocopherol and its water soluble analogue, Trolox, and on the other, gallic acid and its ester derivatives, propyl gallate and dodecyl gallate. At a moderate temperature (40 °C), the samples were oxidized under accelerated conditions by using Cu(II) as an oxidation catalyst. The progress of oxidation was followed up over time in the free and encapsulated oil fractions. The peroxide value, the total content of polymers and, when appropriate, the content of α-tocopherol were determined. Quantitative analysis of the total fraction of the non-volatile oxidation products and their distribution in oligomers, dimers and monomers was applied to samples to obtain a complete evaluation of oxidation. Finally, as a complementary measure, the antioxidants were also assessed by direct application of the Rancimat test at 100 °C on the dried microencapsulated oil samples. Results showed that the antioxidants of lower polarity in each series, i.e. tocopherol and dodecyl gallate, were to a great extent the most protective antioxidants. The results obtained by the Rancimat test were consistent with those found during oxidation at moderate temperature. Furthermore, the addition of Cu(II) reduced proportionally the oxidative stability index of the dried microencapsulated samples.  相似文献

In this study, different physico-chemical analyses were carried out on mussels cultured at three different Spanish areas: Ría de Vigo (Galicia), the Ebro Delta (Catalonia) and Valencia Harbour (Valencian Community), in order to evaluate the influence of origin on the biometric parameters, chemical composition, and water holding capacity. Mussels from the three sites showed different proximate composition. Molluscs from Valencia showed the smallest size and the highest meat yield. All samples exhibited low concentrations of Cu and Mn, and high contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, and P. The highest level of total free amino acids (FAA) was found in mussels from the Ebro Delta and the lowest in those from Valencia. Taurine was the main FAA in all mussels. Saturated fatty acids predominated over monounsaturated and polyunsaturated ones. Contents of palmitic acid were the highest in all samples. Galician mussels exhibited the highest amount of eicosapentaenoic acid and the lowest of docosahexaenoic acid. Mussels from the three sites showed a characteristic volatile fraction which conferred a typical flavour depending on their origin.  相似文献

The possibilities of detecting hazelnut paste adulterated with refined and non-refined vegetable oils have been studied. Research was focussed mainly on peanut, high oleic-acid sunflower, corn and soybean oils which have a similar composition to hazelnut oil. The analytical procedures to detect fatty acid (FA), triacylglycerol (TAG) and tocopherol profiles as indicators of adulteration were determined. The better indicators experimentally determined were seven FA (palmitic, stearic, linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic, behenic and lignoceric acids) and different TAG with three unsaturated FA (the code letters used for FA are: P = C16:0; S = C18:0; O = C18:1; L = C18:2;; Ln = C18:3) (LLLn, LLL and OOO), two unsaturated FA (POL, PLL and SOO), and one unsaturated FA (PPL). As expected, when refined vegetable oils were added to hazelnut paste, the increment of stigmasta-3,5-diene allowed detection at levels of 2% oil added. Limits of detection were measured using standard and adulterated hazelnut with different amounts of non-refined vegetable oils added (5%, 10%, 20% and 30%). The distribution of tocopherols and tocotrienols is highly useful, except in the case of added sunflower oil. The differences between the experimental and theoretical values of the TAG with equivalent carbon number (ΔECN) of 42 does not improve the detection limit of hazelnut paste adulterated with peanut or sunflower oils. Similarly, tocopherols usually added to refined vegetable oils as an antioxidant were also determined.  相似文献

The objective of this research is to evaluate an impact of asphalt mixture beams with varying sizes of aggregate in the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) for testing/predicting thermal cracking properties of asphalt pavements. The BBR test has following benefits: the equipment is cheaper, it uses smaller specimens, faster conditioning, easier availability for quality control, easier to manage, etc. However some concerns have been raised: some consider that the size of the aggregate may affect the test’s results; the other concern is that such small beams cannot represent the whole properties of the asphalt pavement. To address these criticisms, imaging techniques, statistical analysis, and viscoelastic modeling are used. Asphalt thin beams prepared with three different nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) (12.5mm, 9.5 mm, and 4.75 mm) were tested at three different temperatures (-18°C, -24°C, and -30°C). Based on results from statistical analyses and viscoelasticity, the ratio of asphalt binders and voids and stiffness differences among the three NMAS specimens are not significant, meaning that the impact of asphalt thin beams prepared with the three NMAS on the prediction of thermal cracking is minimal and can be neglected.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Blends of epoxy resin oligomers, diglycidylether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA), and a bislactone, 1,6‐dioxaspiro[4.4]nonan‐2,7‐dione (s(γBL)), were anionically copolymerized using two tertiary amines as anionic initiators. Their curing rheology and gelation behaviour were studied to provide a more comprehensive knowledge of the curing of these previously studied systems. RESULTS: The activation energy for gelation was found to be similar to that previously measured using differential scanning calorimetry and appeared to increase in the presence of the bislactone. The reaction rate during copolymerization of DGEBA with s(γBL) was slower than DGEBA homopolymerization alone because the alkoxide attack on the epoxide is faster than the reaction of the carboxylate ion and the epoxy group. The effect of the initiator type on the gel conversion was small and was presumably due to differences in the kinetic chain length caused by amine regeneration from the quaternary amine. For the same initiator and at a constant ratio of DGEBA/s(γBL), an increase in the hydroxyl concentration of the DGEBA oligomer raised the gel conversion. For a DGEBA oligomer with low hydroxyl levels, an increase in the concentration of s(γBL) increased the gel conversion; however, for a DGEBA oligomer with high hydroxyl levels, increasing s(γBL) concentration decreased the gel conversion. CONCLUSION: These results are interpreted in terms of the effect of initiation rate and chain transfer rate on the kinetic chain length. The glass transition temperature of the gel was found to be controlled by the fraction of the aliphatic s(γBL) and the amount of plasticizing sol in the matrix. Non‐digestible carbohydrate fraction (NDCF) consists of a range of bioactive compounds that escape digestion in the small intestine. NDCF is mainly composed of dietary fibre (DF) and non‐digestible oligosaccharides (NDO). The objective of this work was to analyse directly and compare the NDCF in two Brazilian cultivars of soybean seed with commercial flour. Brazil is the second major soybean producer in the world. The seed cultivars showed on average a NDCF value of 32.80 g per 100 g dry weight (dw). Regarding DF, insoluble DF (IDF) was the main fraction amounting on average to 98%. Uronic acids were significantly higher than neutral sugar (NS) in IDF and soluble DF (SDF) fractions. There was a considerable amount of Klason lignin – on average 84.14% of DF. Regarding NS profile, mannose was the most important sugar in SDF, whereas galactose and arabinose were predominant in IDF. Stachyose was the main oligosaccharide in NDO. DF and NDO were in the same proportion (94.2:5.8) in tested cultivars. No differences in swelling, water retention, or oil retention capacities between seed cultivars were detected. This study on non‐digestible carbohydrate components in soybean seed gives a different approach to the current nutritional knowledge on protein and oil constituents.  相似文献

The interest of the scientific community in the effects of plant polyphenols on animal nutrition is increasing. These compounds, in fact, are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom, especially in some spontaneous plants exploited as feeding resources alternative to cultivated crops and in several agro-industry by-products. Polyphenols interact with rumen microbiota, affecting carbohydrate fermentation, protein degradation, and lipid metabolism. Some of these aspects have been largely reviewed, especially for tannins; however, less information is available about the direct effect of polyphenols on the composition of rumen microbiota. In the present paper, we review the most recent literature about the effect of plant polyphenols on rumen microbiota responsible for unsaturated fatty acid biohydrogenation, fiber digestion, and methane production, taking into consideration the advances in microbiota analysis achieved in the last 10 yr. Key aspects, such as sample collection, sample storage, DNA extraction, and the main phylogenetic markers used in the reconstruction of microbial community structure, are examined. Furthermore, a summary of the new high-throughput methods based on next generation sequencing is reviewed. Several effects can be associated with dietary polyphenols. Polyphenols are able to depress or modulate the biohydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids by a perturbation of ruminal microbiota composition. In particular, condensed tannins have an inhibitory effect on biohydrogenation, whereas hydrolyzable tannins seem to have a modulatory effect on biohydrogenation. With regard to fiber digestion, data from literature are quite consistent about a general depressive effect of polyphenols on gram-positive fibrolytic bacteria and ciliate protozoa, resulting in a reduction of volatile fatty acid production (mostly acetate molar production). Methane production is also usually reduced when tannins are included in the diet of ruminants, probably as a consequence of the inhibition of fiber digestion. However, some evidence suggests that hydrolyzable tannins may reduce methane emission by directly interacting with rumen microbiota without affecting fiber digestion.  相似文献

Several hop derived compounds in wort are known to be converted by yeast during fermentation, influencing the overall perception of the beer. A deeper understanding of such metabolic processes during fermentation is needed to achieve better control of the outcome. Here, the interaction between hop derived compounds and the yeast genera Brettanomyces was studied. Several Brettanomyces strains with different genomic backgrounds were selected, focusing on two traits: beta-glucosidase activity and nitrate assimilation. The role of three beta-glucosidases present in Brettanomyces bruxellensis and Brettanomyces anomalus and their impact on the final monoterpene alcohol profile was analysed. The beta-glucosidase activity was highly strain dependent, with B. anomalus CRL-49 exhibiting the highest conversion. Such activity could not be related to the release of aglycones from hops during fermentation, as a substantial part of such activity was intracellular. Nevertheless, the reduction of geraniol to β-citronellol was remarkably efficient for all Brettanomyces strains during fermentation, and it is suggested that two oxidoreductases BbHye2 and BbHye3 may have an influence. Moreover, the transfer of nitrate from hops to wort and its further assimilation by Brettanomyces species was analysed. The amount of nitrate in wort proved to be linearly proportional to the contact time of the hops with the wort. The level of nitrate assimilation by yeast was shown to be dependent on the nitrate assimilation cluster (YNR, YNI, YNT). Hence, the desired yeast strains may be selected according to the genetic make-up. © 2020 The Authors.
