This paper presents 10 months of experience with two seawater-SZ (Storage Zone) solar ponds operated as a source of warm seawater which could have been used in an adjacent mariculture facility. Observations and extensive temperature, gradient and efficiency data are presented. This work demonstrated operation of and heat extraction from seawater-SZ solar ponds over a much longer interval than in previous work. It confirmed that seawater-SZ solar ponds can consistently give useful temperature elevations. A few phenomena not characteristic of conventional solar ponds were identified and are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Poly(propylene oxide), PPO, obtained using diphenylzinc, Ph2Zn, and using the diphenylzinc-water system at various molar ratios H2O/Ph2Zn, were studied through 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy establishing that the polymerization initiates by coordition of propylene oxide (PO) to a terminal zinc atom of the active species followed by consecutive insertions of PO units at this zinc atom. The PPO obtained showed Ph-and HO-, HO-and HO-end-groups depending on the molar ratio H2O/Ph2Zn used, and also HO-and PhO-end-groups when oxygen was present in the polymerization system.  相似文献

The Steady radial distribution of chemical species in a wire‐to‐cylinder ozone generator filled with pure oxygen has been computed by applying four different plasma chemistry models of increasing complexity. The most complete model considers ten species (e, O2 +, O2 ?, O3 ?, O?, O2, O2(1Δg), O2(1g +), O and O3) and 79 reactions, including ionization by electron impact, electron attachment and detachment, electron-ion recombination, charge transfer, etc. The chemical model is coupled with the electrical model through Poisson's equation. The spatially averaged ozone density has been computed as a function of the current intensity and compared with the experimental values obtained by UV spectroscopy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Many industrial discharges, such as those generated from petrochemical refineries, contain large amounts of sulfurous, nitrogenous and organic contaminants. Denitrification has emerged as a suitable technology for the simultaneous removal of these pollutants in a single reactor unit; however, more evidence is demanded to clarify the limitations of denitrification on the simultaneous removal of sulfide and phenolic contaminants and to optimize the biological process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of a denitrifying sludge to simultaneously convert sulfide and p‐cresol via denitrification. RESULTS: Sulfide was the preferred electron donor over p‐cresol, imposing a 5 h lag phase (required for complete sulfide removal) on organotrophic denitrification. Addition of sulfide (20 mg S2? L?1) to p‐cresol‐amended denitrifying cultures also decreased the reduction rate of nitrate and nitrite, as well as the production rate of nitrogen gas. Nitrite reduction rate was the most affected step by sulfide, decreasing from 35 to 21 mg N (g VSS d)?1. A synergistic inhibitory effect of nitrate and sulfide was also observed on nitrite reduction. Despite the effects of sulfide on the respiratory rates monitored, complete removal of nitrate, sulfide and p‐cresol could be achieved after 48 h of incubation. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that simultaneous removal of sulfide and p‐cresol could be achieved in denitrifying reactors, but a large hydraulic residence time may be required to sustain an efficient process due to inhibitory effects of sulfide. In the literature on statistical inference in software reliability, the assumptions of parametric models and random sampling of bugs have been pervasive. We argue that both assumptions are problematic, the first because of robustness concerns and the second due to logical and practical difficulties. These considerations motivate the approach taken in this paper. We propose a nonparametric software reliability model based on the order-statistic paradigm. The objective of the work is to estimate, from data on discovery times observed within a type I censoring framework, both the underlying distribution F from which discovery times are generated and N, the unknown number of bugs in the software. The estimates are used to predict the next time to failure. The approach makes use of Bayesian nonparametric inference methods, in particular, the beta-Stacy process. A rate 1/n binary generic convolutional encoder is a shift-register circuit where the inputs are information bits and the outputs are blocks of n bits generated as linear combinations on the appropriate shift register contents. The decoding of the outputs of a convolutional encoder can be carried out by the well-known Viterbi algorithm. The communication pattern of the Viterbi Algorithm is given as a graph, called trellis, associated to the state diagram of the corresponding encoder. In this paper we present a methodology that permits the efficient mapping of the Viterbi algorithm onto a column of an arbitrary number of processors. This is done through the representation of the data flow by using mathematical operators which present an inmediate hardware projection. A single operator string has been obtained to represent a generic encoder through the study of the data flow of free-forward encoders and feed-back encoders. The formal model developed is employed for the partitioning of the computations among an arbitrary number of processors in such a way that the data are recirculated opimizing the use of the processors and the communications. As a result, we obtain a highly regular and modular architecture suitable for VLSI implementation.  相似文献

Response of adults of the West Indian sugarcane weevil,Metamasius hemipterus sericeus, to various semiochemical treatments and physical trap designs was studied in southern Florida in field-grown banana and Canary Island date palms. Ethyl acetate released alone at 860–1007 mg/day was as effective for the capture ofM. h. sericeus as a combination of ethyl acetate (844–919 mg/day), ethyl propionate (348–362 mg/day), and ethyl butyrate (117–137 mg/day) and in one trial was more effective than fermenting sugarcane (250 g), ethyl propionate alone (353–384 mg/day), ethyl butyrate alone (123–174 mg/day), or no treatment. Ethyl acetate released alone at 675–683 mg/day was as attractive as 250 g of fermenting sugarcane or the racemic blend of the male-produced aggregation pheromones [(±)-5-methyl-nonan-4-ol and (±)-2-methyl-heptan-4-ol (8:1 ratio) “metalure”] at 3 mg/day. Weevil counts increased with binary combinations of ethyl acetate, sugarcane, and/or metalure over these treatments alone and the ternary combination was two to three times more effective than any of the binary treatments. Attraction to ethyl acetate released alone at 777 mg/day with metalure was greater than to the hydrolysis products of ethyl acetate (ethanol and/or acetic acid each released at about 6–8 mg/day) with metalure. Weevil counts from traps baited with 250 g of sugarcane and metalure increased with increasing dose of ethyl acetate to about 400 mg/day and then appeared to plateau. Ethyl acetate (about 700 mg/day) and metalure increased weevil counts in traps with increasing amounts of sugarcane (0–2 kg). Molasses (45 g) + water (158 ml) substitutes for sugarcane were about as effective for capturingM. h. sericeus as 250 g of fermenting sugarcane [all treatments with ethyl acetate (847 mg/day) and metalure]. Early experiments used a lethal pitfall trap. We demonstrated that several alternative trap designs were more effective than the lethal pitfall trap for capturing weevils. Color and height (on ground vs. 1 m on pole) did not affect trap efficacy when baited with the ternary combination of ethyl acetate (672–825 mg/day), sugarcane (250 g), and metalure.  相似文献

Participating media with an inhomogeneous index of refraction make light follow curved paths. Simulating this in a global illumination environment has usually been neglected due to the complexity of the calculations involved, sacrificing accurate physical simulations for efficient visual results. This paper aims to simulate non-linear media in a more reasonable time than previous works without losing physical correctness. Accuracy is achieved by solving the Eikonal equation of geometrical optics, which describes the path followed by a light beam that traverses a non-linear medium. This equation is used in the context of a photon mapping extension.  相似文献

Glutamine 105 in the third transmembrane helix of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRH-R) occupies a position equivalent to a conserved negatively charged residue in receptors for biogenic amines where it acts as counterion interacting with the cationic amine moiety of the ligand. Maximum levels of response to TRH in oocytes expressing wild-type TRH-Rs were indistinguishable from those of oocytes expressing receptors mutated to Glu, Asn, or Asp in position 105. However, the EC50 values for activation of oocyte responses increased more than 500 times in oocytes expressing mutant Glu105 receptors, in which the amido group of Gln105 has been removed by site-directed mutagenesis. Charge effects do not seem to be involved in the huge effect of mutating Gln105 to Glu, since mutation of Gln105 to Asp induces only a 15-fold increase in EC50. Furthermore, no change in EC50 is observed after mutation of Asn110 to Asp. The affinity shift (identified by changes in EC50 values for systems of comparable efficacy) in Glu105 mutant receptors was partially recovered in oocytes expressing Asn105 mutant receptors. These results and those obtained after substitution of Lys, Leu, Tyr, and Ser for Gln105 suggest that the presence and the correct position of the Gln hydrogen bond-donor amido group are important for normal functionality of the receptor. In wild type or Asp105 mutant receptors showing the same maximal responses, decreases in affinity with TRH and methyl-histidyl-TRH correlated with increased dissociation rates of hormone from the receptor. Rapid dilution experiments following subsecond stimulation indicate that the TRH-R is converted rapidly from a form showing fast dissociation kinetics to a form from which the hormone dissociates slowly. Mutation of residue 105 impairs the receptor shift between these two forms. This effect was demonstrated in a direct way by comparing [3H]methyl-histidyl-TRH dissociation rates in COS-7 cells transfected with either wild type or Asp105 mutant TRH-Rs. Thus, residues located in transmembrane helix III positions equivalent to those of the counterions for biogenic amines, regulate hormone-receptor interactions in the TRH receptor (and perhaps other receptors). Furthermore, the nature of the amino acid in these positions may also play a role, directly or indirectly, in conformational changes leading to receptor activation, and hence to signal transduction.  相似文献
