Multiprocessors from a software perspective

Like many architectural techniques that originated with mainframes. the use of multiple processors in a single computer is becoming popular in workstations and even personal computers. Multiprocessors constitute a significant percentage of recent workstation sales, and highly affordable multiprocessor personal computers are available in local computer stores. Once again, we find ourselves in a familiar situation: hardware is ahead of software. Because of the complexity of parallel programming, multiprocessors today are rarely used to speed up individual applications. Instead, they usually function as cycle-servers that achieve increased system throughput by running multiple tasks simultaneously. Automatic parallelization by a compiler is a particularly attractive approach to software development for multiprocessors, as it enables ordinary sequential programs to take advantage of the multiprocessor hardware without user involvement. This article looks to the future by examining some of the latest research results in automatic parallelization technology     

Polarization-independent all-optical switching

A polarization-independent all-optical switch has been demonstrated based on a nonlinear fiber Sagnac interferometer. The control signal is split and recombined with a time delay, producing two linearly polarized pulses that lie within the temporal switching window of the circuit. Less than 10% variation of the switched output signal was observed as the input polarization was varied     

Simulation of ultra thin film SOI transistors using a non-local ballistic model for impact ionisation

To model bipolar snapback in thin film SOI transistors accurately, it is necessary to employ a non-local model of impact ionisation. Such a model, based on the “Lucky electron” theory, has been incorporated in a two-dimensional device simulator. Accurate prediction of bipolar holding voltage has been obtained for SOI transistors with sub-micron gate lengths. The model has been applied to analyse separately the effects of both lightly doped source and lightly doped drain in maximising the holding voltage. The advantage of using ultra thin highly doped SOI films in conjunction with a lightly doped drain is discussed.     

POLARISCOPIC EXAMINATION OF GLASS CONTAINER SECTIONS*

The ring-section technique has been studied by the Standard Testing Procedure Committee of the Glass Container Association, and a tentative Standard Method of Examining and Grading Glass Container Ring Sections is proposed. The scope, method, and frequency of sampling, method of examination, and the methods used for ware-quality grading and glass-quality grading are described.
