Jatropha curcas L. has emerged in recent times as a leading energy crop in sub-Saharan Africa with over 32 countries in the region involved in its cultivation. By 2008, five countries in the region (Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe) had policies promoting Jatropha cultivation. These policies were not informed by empirical evidence arising from the performance of Jatropha in the region. This paper analyses performance data of Jatropha in the region with a view to synthesizing information that is useful for evidence-based policy formulation. Production data in terms of agronomic issues and seed yields are analyzed. The results show that most of the attributes generically associated with Jatropha have not been achieved in the region and there has been inadequate research to support Jatropha cultivation. Policies supporting cultivation of Jatropha need to be informed by these observations in order to promote viable cultivation of the crop.  相似文献

This paper proposes a biologically inspired and technically implemented sound localization system to robustly estimate the position of a sound source in the frontal azimuthal half-plane. For localization, binaural cues are extracted using cochleagrams generated by a cochlear model that serve as input to the system. The basic idea of the model is to separately measure interaural time differences and interaural level differences for a number of frequencies and process these measurements as a whole. This leads to two-dimensional frequency versus time-delay representations of binaural cues, so-called activity maps. A probabilistic evaluation is presented to estimate the position of a sound source over time based on these activity maps. Learned reference maps for different azimuthal positions are integrated into the computation to gain time-dependent discrete conditional probabilities. At every timestep these probabilities are combined over frequencies and binaural cues to estimate the sound source position. In addition, they are propagated over time to improve position estimation. This leads to a system that is able to localize audible signals, for example human speech signals, even in reverberating environments.  相似文献

The activities of some enzymes of glycerolipid synthesis and fatty acid oxidation were measured in subcellular fractions of the yolk sac membrane (YSM), an extra-embryonic tissue that mediates the transfer of lipid from the yolk to the circulation of the chick embryo. The activities of monoacylglycerol acyltransferase and carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 in the YSM (respectively, 284.8±13.2 nmol/min/mg microsomal protein and 145.6±9.1 nmol/min/mg mitochondrial protein; mean ±SE; n=4) at day 12 of development appear to be the highest yet reported for any animal tissue. Also, the carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 of the YSM was very insensitive to inhibition by malonyl CoA. The maximal activities of glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase in the YSM (respectively, 26.7±2.2 and 36.1±2.1 nmol/min/mg microsomal protein) were also high compared with the reported values for various animal tissues. The very high enzymic capacity for glycerolipid synthesis supports the hypothesis that the yolk-derived lipids are subjected to hydrolysis followed by reesterification during transit across the YSM. The monoacylglycerol pathway appears to be the main route for glycerolipid resynthesis in the YSM. The results also suggest that the YSM has the capacity to perform simultaneously β-oxidation at a high rate in order to provide energy for the lipid transfer process.  相似文献

Decreased left ventricular ejection fraction is the most commonly used risk factor for identification of patients at high-risk for lethal ventricular arrhythmic events. Twenty-four-hour electrocardiographic (ECG) approaches to risk stratification include: counts of ventricular premature contractions (VPCs), measures of heart rate variability (HRV), and heart rate turbulence (HRT) which has two components, turbulence onset and turbulence slope (TS). Refinement of these ECG risk stratifiers could enhance their clinical utility. We explored the structural relationships between heart rate (HR) and HRV and HRT measures. Our goal was to separate out the component of these measures due to the underlying average heart rate (HR), thus potentially reducing the variability of the measures and increasing their power to stratify risk. We proposed re-scaling tachograms of heart-beat intervals so that the re-scaled tachogram has a HR of 75 (or equivalently an average interval of 800 ms) and calculating HRV and HRT from the rescaled time series. We also explored the relationship between the number of VPCs and HRT. We showed that TS is structurally related to the number of VPCs (and hence to the length of the ECG recording). We proposed an adjusted TS that is independent of the number of VPCs. We also addressed the ability of shorter ECG recording to estimate HRV and HRT measures. We evaluated standard and rescaled HRV and HRT measures using qualifying ambulatory ECG recordings from 744 patients in the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial. We found that measures based on the rescaled tachogram had reduced variance (20% to 40%). Correlations between measures were also substantially reduced. We also found substantial circadian effects on some, but not all HRV indices, not explained by the circadian pattern in HR and possibly pointing to additional measures for risk prediction. In conclusion, we found that adjusting for HR and the number of VPCs in heart-beat related ambulatory ECG measures has the potential to significantly improve the power of these measures to risk stratify cardiac patients.  相似文献

This paper investigates the possibility of determining nitrate concentration in soil pastes using spectral absorbance at several fixed wavebands. A three-step procedure for determining the most appropriate wavebands, as well as their width, is described. This procedure is applied to a dataset that includes eleven soils with various nitrate concentrations ranging from 0 to approximately 150 mg [N]/kg [dry soil]. The results show that nitrate concentration can be determined quite acceptably using only four 12 cm(-1) wide wavebands, centered at 1280, 1330, 1379, and 1430 cm(-1). The prediction errors range from approximately 1.5 to 14.0 mg [N]/kg [dry soil], depending on soil composition and moisture content, with the lighter and more vulnerable (pollution-wise) soils having errors inferior to 10 mg [N]/kg [dry soil]. These results are similar to results obtained by applying partial least square to the 'continuous' spectrum, and indicate that the development of a soil nitrate attenuated total reflectance (ATR) sensor based on a few fixed mid-infrared (MIR) wavebands could be considered.  相似文献

The authors developed a grounded theory about how a school serving relatively advantaged children produces high reading and writing achievement compared with schools serving similar populations of students. The school's faculty is reading and writing focused, and students experience many books as they receive explicit, demanding instruction (i.e., about how to read words, comprehend, write) connected to content learning. The school offers a positive, motivating environment. In sum, many elements that potentially supported achievement were identified, including explicit teaching of skills in the context of much reading, writing, and content learning, which is consistent with balanced perspectives on reading and writing development. A major hypothesis in the grounded theory is that even with relatively advantaged populations, great efforts may be required to produce high reading and writing achievement. When the steady states are largely predominant with respect to transitional phases, steady-state simulation seems sufficient to predict the behavior of a complex system. Over the past 20 years, different modeling languages and dedicated tools have been developed to improve steady state simulation.In this paper, focus is made on steady-state simulation for system control and design. A model combining an emission sub-model with a ship propulsion sub-model was implemented in a constraint programming (CP) approach. It will help to determine the efficiency (i.e. the ability to model and solve the problem) and complexity of implementation (i.e. difficulties encountered during the implementation) of this approach.First, requirements for the steady-state simulation of complex systems are defined. Then, CP approach is shown to be able to answer these issues through experiments. This approach is then compared to one of the main simulation languages: Modelica.Although the two approaches (i.e Modelica and CP) are able to reverse models, the study shows that the use of Modelica principles for steady-state simulation involves some crippling limitations, such as the non-management of under/over-constrained systems, or inequalities.This study also shows that the constraint programming approach permits to meet some needs for steady-state simulation not yet covered by current approaches.  相似文献

Flood disasters are the most common natural risk and tremendous efforts are spent to improve their simulation and management. However, simulation-based investigation of actions that can be taken in case of flood emergencies is rarely done. This is in part due to the lack of a comprehensive framework which integrates and facilitates these efforts. In this paper, we tackle several problems which are related to steering a flood simulation. One issue is related to uncertainty. We need to account for uncertain knowledge about the environment, such as levee-breach locations. Furthermore, the steering process has to reveal how these uncertainties in the boundary conditions affect the confidence in the simulation outcome. Another important problem is that the simulation setup is often hidden in a black-box. We expose system internals and show that simulation steering can be comprehensible at the same time. This is important because the domain expert needs to be able to modify the simulation setup in order to include local knowledge and experience. In the proposed solution, users steer parameter studies through the World Lines interface to account for input uncertainties. The transport of steering information to the underlying data-flow components is handled by a novel meta-flow. The meta-flow is an extension to a standard data-flow network, comprising additional nodes and ropes to abstract parameter control. The meta-flow has a visual representation to inform the user about which control operations happen. Finally, we present the idea to use the data-flow diagram itself for visualizing steering information and simulation results. We discuss a case-study in collaboration with a domain expert who proposes different actions to protect a virtual city from imminent flooding. The key to choosing the best response strategy is the ability to compare different regions of the parameter space while retaining an understanding of what is happening inside the data-flow system.  相似文献

This work is part of a project aiming to develop a renewable fuel for gasification purposes, through convective drying of sludge/wood mixtures. The first step consists of characterizing the behavior of sawdust/sludge mixtures during the application of convective drying. The influence of the mixing step (no mixing versus 30 s at 40 rpm), as well as the sawdust : sludge ratio (1:9, 2:8, 3:7, and 4:6 on a dry basis) and the effect of drying temperature (50, 80, and 110°C) were investigated. In this study, X-ray tomography, a noninvasive imaging technique, is used to assess changes in the volume, void, and exchange surface at the beginning and the end of the drying process. Results first confirm the importance of the mixing step on the drying behavior: the drying rate of the mixed sludge is lower than that of the original sludge. Nevertheless, the addition of sawdust is shown to have a positive impact on the drying process from a mass ratio of 2:8, with drying rates higher than that of the original sludge. With increasing amounts of sawdust, the initial and final bed volumes, initial and final total exchange surfaces, and initial void fraction increase linearly, but the bed volume shrinkage and final void fraction decrease linearly.  相似文献

This study presents information obtained by the synthesis of Fe(3) oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles sol (NanoFe) and NanoFe-impregnated granular activated carbon as adsorbents for boron removal from solutions. The research describes an adsorption method for cleaning a solution containing boron contaminants followed by recovery of the adsorbent and the adsorbed material for safe removal or further reuse. The technology provides an efficient method of boron removal from water. A marked effect of NanoFe and NanoFe-impregnated GAC adsorbents concentration and pH level on boron removal efficiency was demonstrated. At least 95–98% boron recovery efficiency is possible using NanoFe sol and Fe-impregnated GAC that in fact also recover the adsorbent for reuse. Boron adsorption onto the NanoFe-impregnated GAC adsorbent may be described by pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. The boron adsorption capacity on iron (3) oxide nanoparticles and Fe-impregnated GAC at an equilibrium concentration of 0.3 mg/dm3 as B in the solution is much higher than these values for similar adsorbents reported in the literature.  相似文献
