Biofilms containing Candida albicans are responsible for a wide variety of clinical infections. The protective effects of the biofilm matrix, the low metabolic activity of microorganisms within a biofilm and their high mutation rate, significantly enhance the resistance of biofilms to conventional antimicrobial treatments. Peptoids are peptide‐mimics that share many features of host defence antimicrobial peptides but have increased resistance to proteases and therefore have better stability in vivo. The activity of a library of peptoids was tested against monospecies and polymicrobial bacterial/fungal biofilms. Selected peptoids showed significant bactericidal and fungicidal activity against the polymicrobial biofilms. This coupled with low cytotoxicity suggests that peptoids could offer a new option for the treatment of clinically relevant polymicrobial infections. 相似文献

This work presents a solution-phase approach for the “one pot” synthesis of polysilane-gold nanorods. The process starts by the reduction of HAuCl4 to Auo with a solution of poly[diphenylsilane-co-methyl(H)silane] cooled to 4 °C. The formed small Au nanoparticles (5–15 nm diameter) serve further as seeds for the heterogeneous nucleation and anisotropic growth that takes place at 25 °C and yields crystalline needle-like polymer–gold nanostructures. The evolution of the small spherical nanoparticles to nanorods with length/width aspect ratios up to 103 has been proved by UV–Vis spectroscopy, polarized light microscopy and AFM. In a prospective study, 48 fetuses were evaluated with Doppler ultrasound after 34 weeks and classified, according to the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) and estimated fetal weight (EFW), into fetuses with normal growth and fetuses with late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR). Overexpression of miRNAs from neonatal cord blood belonging to LO-FGR fetuses, was validated by real-time PCR. In addition, functional characterization of overexpressed miRNAs was performed by analyzing overrepresented pathways, gene ontologies, and prioritization of synergistically working miRNAs. Three miRNAs: miR-25-3p, miR-185-5p and miR-132-3p, were significantly overexpressed in cord blood of LO-FGR fetuses. Pathway and gene ontology analysis revealed over-representation of certain molecular pathways associated with cardiac development and neuron death. In addition, prioritization of synergistically working miRNAs highlighted the importance of miR-185-5p and miR-25-3p in cholesterol efflux and starvation responses associated with LO-FGR phenotypes. Evaluation of miR-25-3p; miR-132-3p and miR-185-5p might serve as molecular biomarkers for the diagnosis and management of LO-FGR; improving the understanding of its influence on adult disease. 相似文献

This study investigates the effect of Dexamethasone (Dex) treatment on blood and skeletal muscle metabolites level and skeletal muscle activity of enzymes related to energy metabolism after long-duration swimming. To evaluate whether Dex treatment, swimming, and combining these factors act on analyzed data, rats were randomly divided into four groups: saline treatment non-exercise and exercise and Dex treatment non-exercised and exercised. Animals in both exercised groups underwent long-lasting swimming. The concentration of lipids metabolites, glucose, and lactate were measured in skeletal muscles and blood according to standard colorimetric and fluorimetric methods. Also, activities of enzymes related to aerobic and anaerobic metabolism were measured in skeletal muscles. The results indicated that Dex treatment induced body mass loss and increased lipid metabolites in the rats’ blood but did not alter these changes in skeletal muscles. Interestingly, prolonged swimming applied after 9 days of Dex treatment significantly intensified changes induced by Dex; however, there was no difference in skeletal muscle enzymatic activities. This study shows for the first time the cumulative effect of exercise and Dex on selected elements of lipid metabolism, which seems to be essential for the patient’s health due to the common use of glucocorticoids like Dex. 相似文献

In the present work, Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with high metal dispersion were prepared and characterized using chloroplatinic acid and platinum acetylacetonate as metal precursors. The activity and selectivity of the catalysts were evaluated in the hydrogenation of sunflower oil. A comprehensive analysis of the effects of key operational parameters on catalytic performance was carried out. The experimental variables were hydrogen pressure (275.8–551.6 kPa), temperature (160–200°C), and catalyst loading (0.005–0.015 kg Ptexp/m3oil). Platinum catalysts were active, with a double bond conversion of 28% at 2 h. The metal precursor affected catalyst selectivity. The catalyst prepared with chloroplatinic acid exhibited a lower formation of trans-isomers compared with Pt acetylacetonate. The γ-Al2O3 supported platinum catalyst with a metal loading of 0.51 wt.% and a metal dispersion of 98% maintained its initial catalyst activity and selectivity after 10 consecutive uses (1200 min accumulate operation time), without changes in its catalytic properties. The obtained results suggested that Pt catalysts are an attractive alternative to conventional nickel catalysts for the hydrogenation of vegetable oil. 相似文献

The authors report the spontaneous formation of water-soluble chitosan-tartaric acid (CS-TA) spherical particles. Particles are formed by heating chitosan in the presence of tartaric acid under hydrothermal conditions. Tartaric acid serves as an ionic cross-linker, a depolymerizing agent, and a particle stabilizer in aqueous phase. The CS-TA particles exhibit superior colloidal stability at a wide pH range due to their surface charge tunability, which is due to the colocalization of surface hydroxyl, amine, and carboxyl groups. At physiological pH condition, particles have zwitterionic structure as determined by the zeta potential measurements. Still, CS-TA maintains colloidal stability at neutral pH due to the abundance of surface hydroxyl groups. As a proof-of-concept study, the CS-TA particles were labeled with a model insoluble cargo (fluorescein isothiocyanate [FITC]) to demonstrate their capacity for solubilizing hydrophobic drugs. The CS-TA/FITC conjugates were found to remain well dispersed at neutral pH, while maintaining FITC fluorescence properties. 相似文献

Summary N,N-Bis(4-hydroxysalicylidene)ethylendiamine (salen) was attached to a poly[iodopropyl(methyl)-co-diphenylsilane)chain. Due to intermolecular crosslinking reactions, a high molecular weight polymer formation was observed. The resulted material was doped with metal cations through complexation reactions.
