Purpose: To quantify deposition of 99mtechnetium-labeled powder in the Sophia Anatomical Infant Nose-Throat (SAINT) model of a 9-month old. Methods: Powder was generated by the Solovent (BD Technologies), an active dry powder inhaler with spacer, during 30 seconds of tidal volume (TV) breathing. Activity that passed through the model was captured on a filter and represented powder that was available for deposition in the lungs. Deposition in the nasal cavity, on the filter, and in the spacer was expressed as a percentage of the injected dose into the spacer. Results: Mean (± SD) injected dose averaged 89.5 ± 0.09%, 90.3 ± 0.11%, and 91.3 ± 0.05% at 50, 100, and 200 mL TV, respectively. Mean nasal deposition increased significantly from 50 mL to 100 mL and 200 mL TV with 0.60 ± 0.002%, 1.72 ± 0.007%, and 6.75 ± 07.21%, respectively (all p ≤ 0.05). Similarly, mean filter deposition increased significantly from 50 mL to 100 mL to 200 mL with 0.28 ± 0.00%, 1.14 ± 0.00%, and 3.87 ± 0.01%, respectively (all p < 0.05). Mean retention in the spacer was similar at 50 mL (93.38 ± 0.02%) and at 100 mL TV (89.97 ± 0.04%), but decreased significantly to 71.47 ± 0.05% at 200 mL TV (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: These data suggest for the first time the feasibility of delivering a dry powder formulation to infants and toddlers by actively introducing the powder into a spacer. Lung deposition and nasal deposition, as a percent of injected dose, were dependent on tidal volume with deposition increasing with increasing TV. Nevertheless, deposition, as a percent of injected dose, was low in both regions. This was likely due to significant retention in the spacer at all 3 tidal volumes.

During the last decade, there has been a growing interest in understanding the fate of food during digestion in the gastrointestinal tract in order to strengthen the possible effects of food on human health. Ideally, food digestion should be studied in vivo on humans but this is not always ethically and financially possible. Therefore simple static in vitro digestion models mimicking the gastrointestinal tract have been proposed as alternatives to in vivo experiments but these models are quite basic and hardly recreate the complexity of the digestive tract. In contrast, dynamic models that allow pH regulation, flow of the food and injection in real time of digestive enzymes in the different compartments of the gastrointestinal tract are more promising to accurately mimic the digestive process. Most of the systems developed so far have been compared for their performances to in vivo data obtained on animals and/or humans. The objective of this article is to review the validation towards in vivo data of some of the dynamic digestion systems currently available in order to determine what aspects of food digestion they are able to mimic. Eight dynamic digestion systems are presented as well as their validation towards in vivo data. Advantages and limits of each simulator is discussed. Promising trends include an increasing convergence on core themes such as gender role attitudes, relational and family issues, multiple role dilemmas, cultural influences, and the effects of support and barriers on women's career development. Methodological and theoretical issues are also examined and discussed. Primary among the concluding recommendations are the need for comparative model testing and the integration of important new constructs into existing conceptual models. Latinas are nearly 3 times more likely to acquire AIDS than other women in the United States. It is critical to understand this vulnerability and to identify predictors of risk. Structural equation models were used to test predictors, mediators (including components of the health belief model), and sex-related outcomes and behavior. Interview data were collected from a random, cross-sectional community sample of 227 sexually active Latinas (M age?=?32 years). Acculturation was associated with higher HIV-related risks within primary relationships. Older Latinas were less likely than younger Latinas to make behavior changes or use barrier methods of contraception to prevent HIV, and they had higher rates of unintended pregnancies. Marriage was related to greater relationship risk and less behavior change. Theoretical models must account for ethnicity, race, and culture to understand better unwanted sexual outcomes for Latinas, including HIV risks. DOSE is unique among structure editor generatiors in its interpretive approach. This approach leads to very fast turn-around time for changes and provides multi-language facilities for no aditional effort or cost. This article compares the interpretive approach to the compilation approach of other structure editor generators. It describes some of the design and implementation decisions made and remade durign this project and the lessons learned. It emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of DOSE with respect to other structure editing systems.  相似文献

The experiments presented in this article examined the slope of the z-ROC (receiver-operating characteristic) function for recognition memory. The slope was examined as a function of strength and the variables study time, list length, word frequency, and category membership. For normal distributions of familiarity, the slope of the z-ROC is the ratio of the new-item to old-item standard deviations. R. Ratcliff, C.-F. Sheu, and S. D. Gronlund (see record 1992-41823-001) found that the slope was constant within standard error as a function of strength of encoding, which is inconsistent with the predictions of the global memory models. The results presented here extend this finding: The slope was constant as a function of strength of encoding, list length, and the number of related items from a category in the study list. Word frequency did affect the slope, but within a frequency class the slope was constant as a function of strength. The implications of these data for the global memory models, the attention likelihood model, and variants of these models are discussed.
