Effects of secretory nerve stimulation on acid phosphatase and peroxidase in submandibular saliva and acini in cats

The effects of parasympathetic or sympathetic nerve stimulation either alone, or in combination, on the acid phosphatase-containing central acinar cells and the peroxidase-containing demilunar cells of the cat submandibular salivary gland have been investigated by histochemical and cytochemical techniques. The results obtained with these techniques were correlated with biochemical assays for both enzymes in the saliva secreted. The results indicate that, although both sets of nerves probably affect both sets of cells, the predominant secretory effect of parasympathetic stimulation is on the central cells and, conversely, the predominant secretory effect of sympathetic stimulation is on the demilunes. Sympathetic stimulation appeared also to have initiated synthesis of peroxidase in the demilunar cells, especially when it was superimposed upon parasympathetic stimulation.     

Changes in the nuclei and chloroplasts in cells of big bud-infected tomatoes

Electron-microscopic studies of ultrathin sections of young tomato shoots infected by big bud showed that the mycoplasma causes pathological changes in the cell nucleus and chloroplasts.     

Studies on the pituitary "fettstoffwechselhormon". VII. Analytical studies on two lipolytically high active peptides from hog pituitary glands

First results of analytical studies on the highly purified lipolytic active hog pituitary fractions P-LF II C and P-LF II D are reported. Electrophoresis and end-group determinations indicate homogeneity for both peptides. The molecular weights, amino acid compositions, and the N- and C-terminal sequences of these peptides have been established and are compared with the corresponding results of other laboratories. The relation between biological activity and the structure of lipolytic active peptides is discussed.     

Management of intracerebral hemorrhage in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Report of four cases

There has been little comment on the specific management of intracerebral bleeding occurring in patients suffering idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The authors present the cases of four children with intracerebral hemorrhage due to this coagulation disturbance. A plan of management is described based on this experience; it includes immediate control of cerebral edema, emergency splenectomy, supportive care with platelet transfusions and corticosteroids, cerebral angiogtaphy, and a definitive neurosurgical procedure. If necessary, the radiological investigation and surgical therapy can be performed with a single general anesthetic. Three of the patients have survived without major neurological sequelae.
