Memorializes E. E. Jones, whose early development of attribution theory, the actor–observer effect, and the correspondence bias as well as later work on self-handicapping, social stigma, and strategic self-presentation are central to modern social psychology. He built graduate programs at Duke and Princeton, trained many influential social psychologists, and received virtually every award in his field. Circuitry, architecture, and functional dynamics of visual cortex

A fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of cortical processing requires an examination of the relationships of cortical circuitry, functional architecture, and receptive field properties. Ultimately, this kind of analysis can be utilized to explore the neurobiological basis of psychophysics and perception. At the onset our studies were intended to account for the then known receptive field properties of cortical cells in terms of their underlying circuitry, but surprisingly a good part of the cortical circuit appeared to be in violation of the principles of cortical architecture, and this led us to explore the possibility of new, more complex properties of cortical cells. It has become increasingly possible to relate the responsive specificity of cortical cells, and the circuitry underlying this specificity, to the perceptual capabilities of the visual system by performing analogous experiments on single cells and in human psychophysics.     

Murine cytomegalovirus-inhibitory effects of ImuVert

ImuVert, a sterile preparation composed primarily of Serratia marcescens membrane vesicles and ribosomes, was significantly inhibitory to murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infections in BALB/c mice. Antiviral activity was manifested as increased survivor number and decreased recoverable virus titers in spleens, lungs and salivary glands. Treatments were intraperitoneal (i.p.) beginning 24 h pre, 4 h post- or 24 h post-virus inoculation and then repeated 4 days later. Doses of 5, 16 or 50 micrograms/mouse were effective; 160 micrograms/mouse, which caused host weight loss in toxicity controls, was not inhibitory to the infection. A single i.p. treatment of mice substantially augmented natural killer (NK) cell activity and increased total B-cells, while reducing total T- and T-helper cells. A late (48 h) decline in T-cell function and transient increases in B-cell function were observed in the treated animals. Serum interferon was not induced. Mice pretreated with anti-asialo GM1 antibody to reduce their NK cell populations, then infected with MCMV and treated with ImuVert were protected to the same degree as normal animals. Severe combined immunodeficient mice infected with MCMV and treated with ImuVert were not protected from the infection. These data suggest ImuVert to act by a mechanism other than NK cell activation in preventing MCMV infections.     

Peroxide crosslinking of rigid poly(vinyl chloride)

Peroxide crosslinking of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) with trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate was investigated. Formulations used in this work contained a nontoxic lead‐free stabilizer and showed good color and heat stability. The samples were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, and their tensile properties were measured at room temperature and at 130°C. Gel content or tetrahydrofuran‐insoluble material was measured as an indication of crosslinking. It was shown that premature crosslinking could be avoided during processing and that 190°C was the optimum processing temperature for maximum gel content. Extrahepatic metabolism of 4-methylumbelliferone and lidocaine in the anhepatic rabbit

OBJECTIVE: The initially well-fixed implants of total hip replacement (THR) are in the long-term subject to aseptic loosening. Many cytokines can contribute to osteolysis due to osteoclast recruitment and/or activation. However, in this respect tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) plays a pivotal role, because it upregulates interleukin-1 and 6 and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor. The aim of this study was to assess the eventual presence, cellular localization and extent of expression of TNF-alpha in the synovial-like membrane at the implant or at the cement to bone interface compared to control synovial membrane. METHODS: Twenty samples from the synovial-like membrane of the periprosthetic tissues were compared to control samples. TNF-alpha containing cells were visualized using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method and analyzed by light microscopy, double labelling and image analysis. RESULTS: TNF-alpha was found in the periprosthetic tissues in fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells, but mainly in the macrophages was it found to coincide with areas containing implant-derived debris. TNF-alpha containing cells were more numerous in the synovial-like membrane in the interface tissue from the proximal stem area (2816 +/- 318 cells) than in the control synovial membrane (565 +/- 93 cells, p < 0.01). Interestingly, similarly high TNF-alpha expression (3452 +/- 582 cells) was also seen in the synovial-like membrane of the pseudocapsule. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the foreign body-type host reaction caused by THR is characterized by the high expression of TNF-alpha. Because such expression occurred in the interface tissue between the implant and surrounding bone, TNF-alpha, due to its pivotal direct and indirect role in the activation and recruitment of osteoclasts, may contribute to periprosthetic osteolysis and to the loosening of THR.     

Pharmacological specificities and modalities of prescriptions for corticoids for asthmatic adults

The efficacy of corticosteroids in asthma has been recognized over 40 years ago. Since that time, the advent of inhaled forms has further improved the therapeutic of these drugs which are now recognized as the fundamental treatment for asthma, and described in detail by national and international consensus. Based on a large body of literature, it can now be recommended to prescribe inhaled corticosteroids for symptomatic asthma patients. Long-term treatment is required and dosage not exceeding 1000 micrograms/d (beclometasone dipropionate equivalent) in adults are safe. Differences in the pharmacological characteristics of the various systematic and inhaled corticosteroids can be used to adapt treatment and administration route to each patient and achieve good patient compliance with optimal therapeutic efficacy.
