This paper describes a five-year Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) project directed toward increasing ash utilization. EPRI is undertaking this program to promote the bulk sale of coal ash in high-volume applications that do not require a specific quality or class of ash; in medium-technology applications in cement and concrete; and in high-technology uses for valuable products requiring stringent quality control. High-volume applications include the use of ash in highways and railroads, backfills, and pavement base course; medium-technology applications include cement and concrete; and high-technology uses include the extraction of the mineral matter or the metals from ash. 相似文献

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are strong, highly elastic, and resistant to wear but still find limited utility due to their macroscopic brittle nature, high costs, and difficulty of processing, particularly when complex shapes are desired. These drawbacks can be mitigated when BMGs are used in miniature parts (< 1 cm), an application which takes advantage of BMGs' enhanced plasticity at small length scales as well the insignificant material cost associated with such parts. As an alternative to traditional metal processing techniques, thermoplastic forming (TPF)-based microfabrication methods have been developed which can process some BMGs like plastics. In this article, we discuss the properties and fabrication of BMGs on minuscule length scales to explore their prospective application in small-scale devices. 相似文献

Studies were done to evaluate 14 direct plating media for their suitability to recover Listeria monocytogenes strain Scott A from pasteurized whole milk, chocolate ice cream mix, Brie cheese and raw cabbage. Healthy cells were inoculated into foods to achieve viable populations of 10(2), 10(4), or 10(6) cells/ml(g). Bind's Acriflavine Agar, Trypaflavine Nalidixic Acid Serum Agar, Listeria Transport Enrichment Agar, Doyle and Schoeni Selective Enrichment Agar (DSSEA) and Modified DSSEA were not suitable for recovering L. monocytogenes from milk and Brie cheese and were therefore not evaluated as direct plating media for recovering the organism from ice cream mix and cabbage. McBride Listeria Agar (MLA), Gum Base Nalidixic Acid Tryptone Soya Agar (GBNTSA), Modified Despierres Agar (MDA) and Modified MLA (MMLA) performed best for recovering all inoculum populations from milk and ice cream mix. Enumeration of L. monocytogenes on several test media was complicated by the growth of large numbers of background microflora present in cabbage and Brie cheese, especially at the lowest test inoculum (10(2)/g). Generally, complete recovery of L. monocytogenes from Brie cheese and cabbage was attained on media when the inoculum population was greater than or equal to 10(4) cells/g. For Brie cheese, MLA, MDA, MMLA and Dominguez Rodriguez Isolation Agar were superior for recovering L. monocytogenes, while GBNTSA, DLEA, MDA and MMLA were best for recovering the organism from cabbage. Results of this experiment indicate that direct-plating procedures, without prior enrichment, can successfully be utilized for recovering L. monocytogenes from foods such as pasteurized milk and ice cream mix which contain low populations of background microflora. However, recovery of L. monocytogenes from foods such as raw cabbage and Brie cheese, which contain high populations of other microorganisms, was not satisfactory using the direct-plating procedures evaluated in this investigation. 相似文献

Total gaseous mercury in headspace air was measured for enclosed concretes dry curing at 40 degrees C for intervals of 2, 28, and 56 days. Release of mercury was confirmed for ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPC) and three concretes in which class F fly ash substituted for a fraction of the cement: (a) 33% fly ash (FA33), (b) 55% fly ash (FA55), and (c) 33% fly ash plus 0.5% mercury-loaded powdered activated carbon (HgPAC). Mean rates of mercury release (0.10-0.43 ng/day per kg of concrete) over the standard first 28 days of curing followed the order OPC < FA33 approximately FA55 < HgPAC. The mercury flux from exposed surfaces of these concretes ranged from 1.9 +/- 0.5 to 8.1 +/-2.0 ng/m(2)/h, values similar to the average flux for multiple natural substrates in Nevada, 4.2 +/- 1.4 ng/m(2)/h, recently published by others. Air sampling extending for 28 days beyond the initial 28-day maturation for OPC, FA55, and HgPAC suggested that the average Hg release rate by OPC is constant over 56 days and that mercury release rates for FA55 and HgPAC may ultimately diminish to levels exhibited by OPC concrete. The release of mercury from all samples was less than 0.1% of total mercury content over the initial curing period, implying that nearly all of the mercury was retained in the concrete. 相似文献
