Eastman-AQ55D is a new poly(ester sulfonic acid) cation exchanger available in a commercial dissolved form. Films of this polymer were coated onto glassy carbon surfaces, and the resulting electrodes exhibit attractive permselectivity, ion-exchange, and antifouling properties. Substantial improvement in the selectivity is observed as a result of excluding anionic species from the surface. The charge-selective behavior is demonstrated in the presence of a variety of compounds of neurological significance. A rapid response to dynamic changes in the concentration of cationic and neutral species is observed. The polymer strongly binds multiply charged counterions. Cyclic voltammetry is used to determine the quantity of incorporated ions as a function of time, concentration, and other variables. The oxidation of hydrogen peroxide is catalyzed when Ru(bpy)3(2+) is incorporated in the coating. The film can also protect the substrate electrode from foulants present in the contacting solution. These features, as well as the low cost, simple coating procedure, strong adherence to surfaces, and versatility, make the Eastman-AQ55D polymer well-suited for a variety of electro-analytical applications.  相似文献

AIMS: In Ireland there are relatively fewer adverse drug reaction (ADR/yellow card) reports from doctors in hospital than in general practice. The aim of this study was to review the attitudes to reporting of ADRs of hospital doctors and to determine the effect of making yellow cards freely available. METHODS: A postal survey of actively practising doctors with follow-up of nonresponders was undertaken. We addressed the single most frequently claimed deterrent to reporting, unavailability of yellow cards, by making cards prominently available and placing one in patient's chart upon admission. In addition, doctors were regularly reminded that ADRs should be reported. RESULTS: Of 118 hospital based doctors, only 45% had ever reported an ADR. Fewer than 5% of pre-registration house officers had reported an ADR and the likelihood of reporting increased with seniority and was greater among physicians than surgeons. We found no evidence that doctors had published case reports in place of submitting ADR reports. Over 3 months, the greater availability of yellow cards and reminders about reporting ADRs led to an approximate five-fold increase in reports but reporting declined rapidly thereafter when verbal reminders were withdrawn, despite continued ready availability of cards suggesting that making cards available alone does not significantly increase reporting. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates there may be more fundamental constraints to reporting than attitudinal surveys would suggest and we need to explore additional avenues to ensure a 'reporting culture'.  相似文献

Chronic exposure (>200 days) of HA1 fibroblasts to increasing concentrations of H2O2 or O2 results in the development of a stable oxidative stress-resistant phenotype characterized by increased cellular antioxidant levels, particularly catalase (D. R. Spitz et al, Arch. Biochem. Biophys., 279: 249-260, 1990; D. R. Spitz et al., Arch. Biochem. Biophys., 292: 221-227, 1992; S. J. Sullivan et al., Am. J. Physiol. (Lung Cell. Mol. Physiol.), 262: L748-L756, 1992). Acutely stressed cells failed to develop a stably resistant phenotype or increased catalase activity, suggesting that chronic exposure is required for the development of this phenotype. This study investigates the mechanism underlying increased catalase activity in the H2O2- and O2-resistant cell lines. In H2O2- and O2-resistant cells, catalase activity was found to be 20-30-fold higher than that in the parental HA1 cells and correlated with increased immunoreactive catalase protein and steady-state catalase mRNA levels. Resistant cell lines also demonstrated a 4-6-fold increase in catalase gene copy number by Southern blot analysis, which is indicative of gene amplification. Chromosome banding and in situ hybridization studies identified a single amplified catalase gene site located on a rearranged chromosome with banding similarities to Z-4 in the hamster fibroblast karyotype. Simultaneous in situ hybridization with a Z-4-specific adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) gene revealed that the amplified catalase genes were located proximate to APRT on the same chromosome in all resistant cells. In contrast, HA1 cells contained only single copies of the catalase gene that were not located on APRT-containing chromosomes, indicating that amplification is associated with a chromosomal rearrangement possibly involving Z-4. The fact that chronic exposure of HA1 cells to either HO2 or 95% O2 resulted in gene amplification suggests that gene amplification represents a generalized response to oxidative stress, contributing to the development of resistant phenotypes. These results support the hypothesis that chronic exposure to endogenous metabolic or exogenous environmental oxidative stress represents an important factor contributing to gene amplification and genomic instability.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The kinetics of ion exchange in a subbituminous coal have been investigated. The rate determining step in the exchange processes was determined to be intraparticle diffusion for particle sizes of 9,500 × 4,000 μm, 425 × 250 μm and 180 × 125 μm. The kinetics of exchange for the 180 × 125 μm particles was very rapid and approached film diffusion control. A relatively simple mathematical model developed by Helfferich (1) describe adequately ion exchange kinetics. The model was effective in predicting the extent of exchange as a function of time and the time required to reach complete exchange. Interdiffusion coefficients at 298 K obtained from the model for exchange of H for Na +, Mg2+and Ca2+ranged from 2.0 × 1010?6to 2.6 × 10?8cm2/s with the values decreasing in the order:

The beneficial health effects of extracts from many types of plants that are used as seasoning agents in foods and beverages have been claimed for centuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of selected herb and spice essential oils for control of growth and survival of microorganisms. Inhibition of growth was tested by the paper disc agar diffusion method. Antibiotic susceptibility discs were used as control. Minimum lethal concentration (MLC) was determined by the tube dilution method. Essential oils from anise, angelica, basil, carrot, celery, cardamom, coriander, dill weed, fennel, oregano, parsley, and rosemary were evaluated. Inhibition ranged from complete with oregano to no inhibition with carrot oil for each of the test strains that included: Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O:157:H7, Yersinia enterocolitica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactobacillus plantarum, Aspergillus niger, Geotrichum, and Rhodotorula. Oregano essential oil showed the greatest inhibition (zone, > or = 70 to 80 mm) (MLC, approximately 8 ppm). Coriander and basil were also highly inhibitory (MLC, approximately 25 to 50 ppm) to E. coli O:157:H7 and to the other bacteria and fungi tested. Anise oil was not particularly inhibitory to bacteria (inhibition zone, approximately 25 mm); however, anise oil was highly inhibitory to molds. Because some of the herbal and spice essential oils are highly inhibitory to selected pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, they may provide alternatives and supplements to conventional antimicrobial additives in foods.  相似文献

Given a connected, undirected graph G whose edges are labeled, the minimum label (or labeling) spanning tree (MLST) problem seeks a spanning tree on G with the minimum number of distinct labels. Maximum vertex covering algorithm (MVCA) is a well-known heuristic for the MLST problem. It is very fast and performs reasonably well. Recently, we developed a genetic algorithm (GA) for the MLST problem. The GA and MVCA are similarly fast but the GA outperforms the MVCA. In this paper, we present four modified versions of MVCA, as well as a modified GA. These modified procedures generate better results, but are more expensive computationally. Data visualization techniques have become important tools for analyzing large multidimensional data sets and providing insights with respect to scientific, economic, and engineering applications. Typically, these visualization applications are modeled and solved using nonlinear optimization techniques. In this paper, we propose a discretization of the data visualization problem that allows us to formulate it as a quadratic assignment problem. However, this formulation is computationally difficult to solve optimally using an exact approach. Consequently, we investigate the use of a local search technique for the data visualization problem. The space in which the data points are to be embedded can be discretized using an n×nn×n lattice. Conducting a local search on this n×nn×n lattice is computationally ineffective. Instead, we propose a divide-and-conquer local search approach that refines the lattice at each step. We show that this approach is much faster than conducting local search on the entire n×nn×n lattice and, in general, it generates higher quality solutions. We envision two uses of our divide-and-conquer local search heuristic: (1) as a stand-alone approach for data visualization, and (2) to provide a good approximate starting solution for a nonlinear algorithm.  相似文献

This study examined memory for emotional material, endorsement of emotional adjectives, and negative attributional style (NAS) in seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD patients showed elevated NAS and increased endorsement of negative self-referent adjectives, but no memory bias for negative material, when compared with never-depressed controls. Longitudinal analyses revealed that none of these cognitive measures significantly predicted later symptom levels independent of initial symptom levels, in the SAD patients. The cross-sectional findings for adjective endorsement and memory were replicated in a second experiment. These data provide further evidence that depression-related memory effects in SAD are different from those found in nonseasonal depression. Accounts of these differences involving putative mood-repair processes and/or an absence of dysfunctional negative schemas in SAD are discussed.
