With the aim of reducing the cost and time needed to treat yam tubers with gibberellic acid (GA3), this study compared several new methods of application with the established dipping procedure (150 mg kg?1 for 1 h). Both GA3‐containing soil paste (25 mg kg?1) and gelatinized starch (860 mg kg?1) were applied to tuber heads of Dioscorea alata and D cayenensis‐rotundata in the Ivory Coast. Soil paste, gelatinized starch and dipping consistently prolonged dormancy and reduced fresh matter losses by 23–39% in D cayenensis‐rotundata 3‐year means. Although dipping reduced the storage losses most efficiently, soil paste and gelatinized starch used considerably less GA3. Both new treatments were easily prepared and quickly applied. Soil paste was most effective when the treatment was repeated before the end of dormancy. The third new method, spraying the tubers with a GA3 solution (150 mg kg?1), was not effective. In general, the optimal time of application was immediately post‐harvest. For D alata, treatment only 1 month after harvest was particularly ineffective, whereas D cayenensis‐rotundata tubers could be treated with some effect up to the end of dormancy. To achieve extended storage periods of healthy tubers of D cayenensis‐rotundata, GA3 application may be recommended as post‐harvest practice. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Objectives: Evaluate the influence of composite viscosity, adhesive systems curing mode and artificial aging on marginal sealing of composite resin restorations. Methods: 240 cavities were prepared in bovine incisors. Teeth were divided in two groups: GR – GrandioSO (Voco), conventional viscosity and GF – GrandioSO Heavy Flow (Voco), low viscosity. Each group was divided into 6 subgroups: FM – Futura Bond M (Voco), FDCL and FDCC – Futura Bond DC (Voco), light and chemical cured, CS – Clearfil S3 Bond (Kuraray), CDCL and CDCC – Cleafil DC (Kuraray), light and chemical cured. Half of all specimens were subjected to mechanical (300.000) and thermal cycling (1.000). Marginal gap was measured in an optical microscope. For microleakage, specimens were stained in 50% ammoniacal silver nitrate. Results: For marginal gap mean (μm), significant differences were shown for all factors (p = 0.000). Results for resin were GR: 28.1 and GF: 40.6; for adhesive CDCC: 28.67, CDCL: 32.25, CS: 34.12, FDCL: 36.10, FM: 36.50 and FDCC: 38.46; and for artificial aging WITHOUT: 29.05 and WITH: 39.65. For microleakage mean (mm), there were also differences for all factors (p = 0.000). Results for resin were GR: 2.68 and GF: 3.46; for adhesive FM: 2.85, CDCC: 3.00, FDCL: 3.08, CDCL: 3.15, CS: 3.16 and FDCC: 3.19; and for artificial aging WITHOUT: 2.66 and WITH: 3.48. Conclusion: Composite with conventional viscosity resulted in narrower marginal gaps and less microleakage. CDCC showed less marginal gap formation. The presence of thermo-mechanical cycling increased the values of gap and microleakage.  相似文献

We have characterized a specific binding site for angiotensin II (AngII) in chicken liver membranes. Pseudo-equilibrium studies at 22 degrees C for 30 min have shown that this binding site recognizes AngII with a high affinity (pKD of 8.13 +/- 0.21). The binding sites are saturable and relatively abundant (maximal binding capacity varies from 0.318 to 0.88 pmol/mg of protein). Nonequilibrium kinetic analyses at 22 degrees C revealed a calculated kinetic pKD of 8.77 +/- 0.20. The binding site is pharmacologically distinct from the classic AngII receptors AT1 and AT2. Competitive binding studies with chicken liver membranes demonstrated the following rank order of effectiveness: AngII (human; Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe) > AngI(Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe-His-Leu) > AngIII(Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe) > AngIV (Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe) > Ang(1-7) (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro) > PD123319 (1-[4(dimethylamino)3-methylphenyl] methyl-5-(diphenylacetyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-imidazo [4,5-c]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid) > DuP753 (2-n-butyl-4-chloro-5 hydroxymethyl-1-[(2'-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl)methyl] imidazole. This atypical AngII binding site (chicken AT) was sensitive to increasing concentrations of DTT and Mn2+. The structure-activity relationship on position 1 of AngII showed that the primary N-terminal amine was essential for binding affinity ([Asp1]AngII > [Suc1]AngII > or = [Sar1]AngII), but modifications of the side chain in position 1 had less influence on the affinity ([Gly1]AngII > [Cys1]AngII approximately [aminoisobutyryl1]AngII approximately [Ser1]AngII > > > [Sar1]AngII). The presence of substantial quantities of this binding site in chicken liver membranes suggests the possibility that the chicken AT may play an important, yet unrecognized, role in the renin-angiotensin system.  相似文献

Hot-air roasting of coffee beans not only forms color and flavor compounds but also leads to a complete alteration of the bean microstructure. The resulting pore structure controls mass transfer phenomena during roasting and storage. The principal objective of the present project was to investigate the influence of different roasting conditions on volume increase and pore-structure development. Coffee beans were roasted in 2 different, well-defined roasting processes to equal degree of roast. Volumetry, mercury porosimetry, and electron microscopy were employed to study structural product properties. The roasting conditions were found to have a major impact on microstructure. High-temperature roasted coffees had greater bean volume, pore volume and larger micropores in the cell walls as compared to low-temperature roasted beans.  相似文献

In this paper, we evaluated the ecotoxicological potential of the 100 pharmaceuticals expected to occur in highest quantities in the wastewater of a general hospital and a psychiatric center in Switzerland. We related the toxicity data to predicted concentrations in different wastewater streams to assess the overall risk potential for different scenarios, including conventional biological pretreatment in the hospital and urine source separation. The concentrations in wastewater were estimated with pharmaceutical usage information provided by the hospitals and literature data on human excretion into feces and urine. Environmental concentrations in the effluents of the exposure scenarios were predicted by estimating dilution in sewers and with literature data on elimination during wastewater treatment. Effect assessment was performed using quantitative structure-activity relationships because experimental ecotoxicity data were only available for less than 20% of the 100 pharmaceuticals with expected highest loads. As many pharmaceuticals are acids or bases, a correction for the speciation was implemented in the toxicity prediction model.The lists of Top-100 pharmaceuticals were distinctly different between the two hospital types with only 37 pharmaceuticals overlapping in both datasets. 31 Pharmaceuticals in the general hospital and 42 pharmaceuticals in the psychiatric center had a risk quotient above 0.01 and thus contributed to the mixture risk quotient. However, together they constituted only 14% (hospital) and 30% (psychiatry) of the load of pharmaceuticals. Hence, medical consumption data alone are insufficient predictors of environmental risk. The risk quotients were dominated by amiodarone, ritonavir, clotrimazole, and diclofenac. Only diclofenac is well researched in ecotoxicology, while amiodarone, ritonavir, and clotrimazole have no or very limited experimental fate or toxicity data available. The presented computational analysis thus helps setting priorities for further testing.Separate treatment of hospital wastewater would reduce the pharmaceutical load of wastewater treatment plants, and the risk from the newly identified priority pharmaceuticals. However, because high-risk pharmaceuticals are excreted mainly with feces, urine source separation is not a viable option for reducing the risk potential from hospital wastewater, while a sorption step could be beneficial.  相似文献

Interactions between potato starch and complex-forming emulsifiers in the presence of xanthan, and their consequences on the rheological properties, were investigated. The aqueous starch-xanthan-emulsifier systems were prepared by mixing the separately dispersed components or by heating the components together. The amount of leached amy lose and the formation of starch-emulsifier complexes were determined by amperometric iodine titration. The viscoelasticity was measured with small-deformation oscillatory tests. The results show that while the incompatibility between starch and xanthan does not affect the formation of starch-emulsifier complexes, it does hinder the gelation process induced by starch complexation and reduce the firmness of the resulting gels. The combination of starch with small amounts of an incompatible biopolymer like xanthan and a complex-forming emulsifier allows the generation of different gel structures.  相似文献

The consistent and predictable progression of larger and more complex projects is often disrupted by conflicts of interests. Major confrontations during the realization of a project can obstruct the economic allocation of resources, and push a well managed project into a state of being ‘thrown-together’ and reactive. Therefore, the management of the unmanageable, i.e. the conflict of interests, requires more than just good management tools. The paper describes different aspects of ‘dialogue management’, and illustrates this by the planning of an environmental-impact statement (EIS).The planning of larger projects that require an EIS is not a major planning problem, because the procedure of creating an EIS is well defined by legal regulations. Nevertheless, as the goal of a well prepared EIS is that of winning a broad acceptance for the project, the reliable management of an EIS includes the planning of dialogue and the understanding of the counterparts involved. Under these circumstances, an unusual project-management strategy is required that is based on a philosophical understanding of human intentions, reactions and interests. The strategy must take into account the fact that the establishment of opinions follows rules that are different from those of normal working operations.  相似文献

In a retrospective study of 73 girls and women treated in a psychiatric inpatient unit in Cape Town between 1979 and 1989, follow-up data were available for 49 (67%) of them. Internationally recommended measures were used to obtain further data, where possible, from 17 subjects (14 with anorexia, 3 with bulimia) who were 4 and more years post-hospitalisation, as well as 19 subjects (9 with anorexia, 10 bulimia) who had been out of hospital less than 4 years. Indirect information was available from 13 subjects. With regard to long-term outcome, 15 of the 17 subjects fell into the Morgan-Russell categories 'good' or 'intermediate'; in the short-term follow-up group, 14 of the 19 fell into these categories. Indirectly, we also discovered that 3 of the original subjects had died, 4 had remained ill, and 6 had recovered. These findings were similar to those from a previous study from this department and are useful feedback on the comprehensive treatment programme. They also throw light on what appears to be a culture-bound syndrome; at the time of study, the eating disorder affected mainly the middle-class white population, a pattern similar to that found elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The effect of application methods and dentin hydration on the bond strength of three self-etching adhesives (SEA) were evaluated; 195 extracted bovine incisors were used. The buccal surface was ground in order to expose the dentin, which remained 2-mm minimum thickness, measured by a thickness meter through an opening on the lingual surface. Adper Single Bond 2? was used for the control group. The SEA were applied following two modes of application: passive or active and two hydration states of the dentin surface—dry and wet. After light-curing, composite buildups were made using Grandio? composite. The specimens were sectioned and tested with a microtensile bond strength test. The application method and the hydration state resulted in statistical differences (p = 0.000) making the values of active application for μTBS to dentin higher than passive application. The wet surfaces showed higher μTBS to dentin ratios than dry surfaces. There were no statistical differences in μTBS among the SEA tested but there were differences regarding to control group.  相似文献
