This study evaluated chemical tenderizers and cooking methods to inactivate Escherichia coli O157:H7 in ground beef patties (model system for non-intact beef). Ground beef was inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 and mixed with (i) nothing (control), (ii) calcium chloride (CC) and flavoring agents (FA), (iii) CC, FA, and acetic acid (AA), (iv) sodium chloride (SC), sodium tripolyphosphate (ST), and potassium lactate (PL), and (v) the combination of SC, ST, PL, and AA. Patties were stored in aerobic or vacuum bags at − 20, 4, and 12 °C. Samples were grilled, broiled, or pan-fried to 60 or 65 °C. Total bacterial and E. coli O157:H7 populations remained unchanged during storage. Broiling was more effective in reducing E. coli O157:H7 than grilling and pan-frying, and acidified tenderizers reduced E. coli O157:H7 more than non-acidified tenderizers in broiling. Higher reductions were observed at 65 °C than 60 °C in broiled and grilled samples. These results indicate that acidified tenderizers and broiling may be useful in non-intact beef safety.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The most common indication for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is major depression. It is less recognized that ECT is effective also in the treatment of acute mania. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and critical review of the literature on the use of ECT for manic patients. METHOD: All published papers in the English language on the use of ECT in acute mania that could be found were reviewed with regard to efficacy, frequency and number of treatments, bilateral versus unilateral electrode placement, predictors of antimanic response, stability of therapeutic response, cognitive consequences, and other relevant issues. RESULTS: The evidence indicates that ECT is associated with remission or marked clinical improvement in 80% of manic patients and that it is an effective treatment for patients whose manic episodes have responded poorly to pharmacotherapy. Manic patients do not require a high frequency or prolonged course of treatments to respond to ECT. The seizure threshold appears to be lower in manic patients than in depressed patients. The issues of relapse following response to ECT, cognitive consequences of ECT, and the relative merits of unilateral versus bilateral ECT in manic patients require further study. CONCLUSIONS: ECT is an effective and safe treatment for acute mania. Remission of mania following ECT reflects a primary therapeutic effect rather than a secondary consequence of an ECT-induced organic brain syndrome.  相似文献

We present a free‐energy driven kinetic Monte Carlo model to simulate homogeneous nucleation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) from vapor phase. The model accounts for monomer‐cluster condensations, cluster–cluster collisions, and cluster evaporations simultaneously. Specifically, we investigate the homogeneous nucleation of Al NPs starting with different initial background temperatures. Our results indicate good agreement with earlier phenomenological studies using the Gibbs# free energy formulation from Classical Nucleation Theory (CNT). Furthermore, nucleation rates for various clusters are calculated through direct cluster observations. The steady‐state nucleation rate estimated using two different approaches namely, the Yasuoka‐Matsumoto (YM) and mean first passage time (MFPT) methods indicate excellent agreement with each other. Finally, our simulation results depict the expected increase in the entropy of mixing as clusters approach the nucleation barrier, followed by its subsequent drastic loss after the critical cluster formation resulting from first‐order phase transitions. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 18–28, 2018  相似文献

Liquid polycarbosilane (LPCS) derived hard coatings of silicon carbide (SiC) were deposited on Inconel alloy at three different moderately high temperatures by chemical vapour deposition. The deposited films were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and Field emission scanning electron microscopy. Liquid PCS yielded a mixture of α-SiC and β-SiC during decomposition having uniform round-shaped particles of dimension around 200–300 nm without extensive cracking and few discrete shaped particles were also found to form at higher temperature (i.e. 1100 °C and 1200 °C) deposited films. The coated samples showed substantial increment in hardness and fracture toughness as compared to the uncoated sample. The fracture toughness (KIC) values of the deposited films were in the range of 6.7–10.7 MPa(m)1/2. The tribological properties and hardness of the films were also found to vary with deposition temperature. The scratch tracks of the films revealed that brittle failures occurred in all SiC coated substrates.  相似文献

A high‐fidelity coagulation driven kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) model is developed to study the physics of the nonlinear interplay between competing exothermic collision‐coalescence mediated surface oxidation and complex morphologies in aggregated nanostructures generated during gas‐phase synthesis of nanoparticles. Results suggest a twofold oxidation mechanism in which thermally activated processes form a critical oxide shell, beyond which morphological complexity of nanoparticles gives rise to enhanced oxidation. Simulation results for the example case‐study of Al nanoparticle synthesis in air under different prototypical processing conditions, i.e., temperature, pressure and volume loading, show the efficacy of the model in determining optimal process variables for tuning the structural and chemical makeup of energetic nanomaterials. Finally, it is demonstrated that inclusion of nonisothermal coalescence that leads to the formation of fractal‐like nanoparticles (particularly, < 15 nm) gives rise to higher degrees of oxidation when compared to instantly coalescing spherical particles. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2012  相似文献

The microstructures of fine-grained β-SiC materials with α-SiC seeds annealed either with or without uniaxial pressure at 1900°C for 4 h in an argon atmosphere were investigated using analytical electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). An applied annealing pressure can greatly retard phase transformation and grain growth. The material annealed with pressure consisted of fine grains with β-SiC as a major phase. In contrast, the microstructure in the material annealed without pressure consisted of elongated grains with half α-SiC. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis showed no differences in the amount of segregation of aluminum and oxygen atoms at grain boundaries, but did show a significant difference in the segregation of yttrium atoms at grain boundaries along SiC grains for the two materials. The increased segregation of yttrium ions at grain boundaries caused by the applied pressure might be the reason for the retarded phase transformation and grain growth. HREM showed a thin secondary phase of 1 nm at the grain boundary interface for both materials. The development of a composite grain consisting of a mixture of β/α polytypes during annealing was a feature common to both materials. The possible mechanisms for grain growth and phase transformation are discussed.  相似文献
