The impact of cleaner processing on nutrient availability in the bleached kraft industry.

The pulp and paper industry has invested heavily over recent years in cleaner processing, to reduce losses and minimise its impact on the environment. Over the past fifteen years, a New Zealand integrated bleached kraft mill has undergone a comprehensive programme of upgrades to increase production, reduce water consumption and streamline its biological treatment process. Whilst the overall discharge of contaminants from the site decreased, the treatment system performance did not show a concurrent improvement as may have been expected. Reduced BOD removal, low dissolved oxygen levels, and poor solids settlability were symptomatic of phosphorus limitation in the aerated lagoon treatment system. The wastewater entering the system was found to be phosphorus limited at a BOD:P ratio of 100:0.2. Mono-ammonium-phosphate was supplemented, at approximately 30 kg P/d, to raise the phosphorus levels to a BOD:P ratio of 100:0.3. Treatment efficiencies improved very quickly after phosphorus dosage, with a 50% reduction in BOD and TSS discharge, a significant increase in dissolved oxygen levels, and improved BOD removal (85% to 93%). This case study demonstrates that whilst more closed operation can result in reduced discharge of organic loads, there may be negative impacts on the availability of nutrients for balanced biological growth.     

Assessment model of dam operation risk based on monitoring data

Although the dams produce remarkable social and economic benefits, the threat made by unsafe dams to the life and property of people who live in the lower river area is un-negligible. Based on the monitoring data which reflect the safety condition of dams, the risk degree concept is proposed and the analysis system and model for evaluating risk degree (rate) are established in this paper by combining the reliability theory and field monitoring data. The analysis method for risk degree is presented based on Bayesian approach. A five-grade risk degree system for dam operation risk and corresponding risk degree is put forward according to the safety condition of dams. The operation risks of four cascade dams on some river are analyzed by the model and approach presented here and the result is adopted by the owner.     

New technological solutions to protect the lining of blast-furnace hearths

The use of schungite as a partial replacement for coke is practiced in Russia at a number of metallurgical plants, both in the production of foundry iron (its primary use) and in making conversion pig iron. The largest amount of coke is replaced when foundry iron is being made, the replacement coefficient in this case having a value within the range 0.8–1.3. Studies that included continuous monitoring of the temperature of the carbon blocks in blast furnaces with volumes of 1719, 3200, and 5580 m³ unambiguously demonstrate that the thickness of the slag crust in blast furnaces increases with the use of schungite. Protecting the lining of the hearth through the use of schungite is also accompanied by a decrease in coke consumption. __________ Translated from Metallurg, No. 8, pp. 53–57, August, 2007.     

Solution of temperature fields in hydrodynamics bearings by the numerical network method

Solution to the 2-D steady-state nonlinear heat conduction equation, involving cylindrical coordinates, applied to a plain bearing by a simple and versatile numerical technique based on network method is presented in this work. These advantages of the technique are necessary for the status evaluation of industrial machines during operation because time and computing resources are limited. The pressure field in the fluid is previously solved from the Reynolds equation by finite element method. The main difficulty is associated with the exponential dependency of the viscosity on temperature. The proposed model is very efficient and requires negligible computing times. Solutions are very close to the experimental and numerical results of other researchers.     

Rapidly tunable optical add-drop multiplexer utilising relaxed beam splitters

A polarisation-independent four-port electro-optic tunable filter in the 1530 nm wavelength regime utilising non-polarising relaxed beam splitters and strain-induced polarisation converters on LiNbO₃ with 16 nm tuning range and 46 ns tuning speed is reported.     

Transition From Perturbed to Coupled-Cavity Behavior With Asymmetric Spectral Emission in Ridge Lasers Emitting at 1.55 μm

We have investigated a series of ridge waveguide lasers with deeply etched slots in the ridges. The slots do not penetrate the active region, but are deep enough to strongly perturb the longitudinal modes. By the addition of slots, a transition between perturbed-mode and coupled-cavity behavior is crossed. With a group of four or more slots, the below-threshold amplified spontaneous emission spectrum from each end of the laser has different periods and the facet-facet oscillations are suppressed indicating that the different sections have become quasi-independent. A model using a distributed emitter in the cavity reproduces this behavior. Above threshold, the single contact coupled cavity lasers are single mode with greater than 30-dB sidemode suppression ratio over a wide range of currents     

Formation of cube texture in nickel-palladium alloys for epitaxial substrates for deposition of high-temperature superconductors

The texture, structure, and magnetic and mechanical properties of thin ribbons of nickel-palladium alloys have been studied. It has been demonstrated that in Ni₉₄Pd₆ and Ni_92.5Pd₅W_2.5 alloys, a sharp cube texture can be formed that is stable up to rather high annealing temperatures. Segregation of palladium atoms to surface layers of ribbons has been found, which gives additional advantages for using these ribbons as substrates for epitaxial deposition of high-temperature superconductors.
