Partner support and other determinants of smoking cessation maintenance among women.

Conducted a prospective examination of the effects of naturally occurring partner support on smoking cessation maintenance with 125 newly abstinent female smokers (mean age 41.8 yrs). 123 of the Ss were married, and 2 were living with a partner. Six days after smoking cessation, Ss supplied demographic and smoking habit data and ratings of a variety of their own and their partners' attributes and behaviors. Factor analysis of partner ratings revealed a dominant factor, Partner Facilitation, which accounted for 74% of the common variance, encompassed both quitting-related and general interactions, and loaded on the following behaviors: problem solving, rewarding quitting, understanding, listening, and facilitating the enactment of coping and nonsmoking skills. Results indicate that when the Partner Facilitation factor was entered into a stepwise discriminant analysis with 19 other variables, it emerged as the primary predictor of smoking cessation maintenance, accounting for 32% of the variance in outcome at 6–8 wks and accurately identifying more than 80% of both successful and unsuccessful outcomes. Gender and helping behavior: A meta-analytic review of the social psychological literature.

Contends, on the basis of posited social-role theory of gender and helping, that the male gender role fosters helping that is heroic and chivalrous, whereas the female gender role fosters helping that is nurturant and caring. In social psychological studies, helping behavior has mainly been examined in the context of short-term encounters with strangers. This focus has tended to exclude from the research literature those helping behaviors prescribed by the female gender role, because they are displayed primarily in long-term, close relationships. In contrast, the helping behaviors prescribed by the male gender role have been generously represented in research findings because they are displayed in relationships with strangers as well as in close relationships. Results from a meta-analytic review of sex differences in 172 studies (appended) in helping behavior indicate that in general men helped more than women and women received more help than men. Nevertheless, sex differences in helping were inconsistent across studies and were successfully predicted by various attributes of the studies and the helping behaviors. Wastewater treatment in tsunami affected areas of Thailand by constructed wetlands.

The tsunami of December 2004 destroyed infrastructure in many coastal areas in South-East Asia. In January 2005, the Danish Government gave a tsunami relief grant to Thailand to re-establish the wastewater management services in some of the areas affected by the tsunami. This paper describes the systems which have been built at three locations: (a) Baan Pru Teau: A newly-built township for tsunami victims which was constructed with the contribution of the Thai Red Cross. Conventional septic tanks were installed for the treatment of blackwater from each household and its effluent and grey water (40 m3/day) are collected and treated at a 220 m2 subsurface flow constructed wetland. (b) Koh Phi Phi Don island: A wastewater collection system for the main business and hotel area of the island, a pumping station and a pressure pipe to the treatment facility, a multi-stage constructed wetland system and a system for reuse of treated wastewater. The constructed wetland system (capacity 400 m3/day) consists of vertical flow, horizontal subsurface flow, free water surface flow and pond units. Because the treatment plant is surrounded by resorts, restaurants and shops, the constructed wetland systems are designed with terrains as scenic landscaping. (c) Patong: A 5,000 m2 constructed wetland system has been established to treat polluted water from drainage canals which collect overflow from septic tanks and grey water from residential areas. It is envisaged that these three systems will serve as prototype demonstration systems for appropriate wastewater management in Thailand and other tropical countries.     

High-speed and large noise margin tolerance E/D logic gates withLDD structure DMTs fabricated using selective RIE technology

The authors describe a novel design concept for enhancement (E) and depletion (D) mode FET formation using i-AlGaAs/n-GaAs doped-channel hetero-MISFET (DMT) and a novel self-aligned gate process technology for submicrometer-gate DMT-LSIs based on E/D logic gates. 0.5-μm gate E-DMTs (D-DMTs) with a lightly doped drain (LDD) structure show an average V_t of 0.18 (-0.46) V, a V_t standard deviation of 22.6 (24.9) mV, and a maximum transconductance of 450 (300) mS/mm. The V_t shift is less than 50 mV with a decrease in gate length down to 0.5 μm. The gate forward turn-on voltage V_f is more than 0.9 V, i.e. about 1.6 times that for MESFETs. This superiority in V _f, preserved in the high-temperature range, leads to an improvement in noise margin tolerance by a factor of three. In addition, 31-stage ring oscillators operate with a power consumption of 20 (1.0) mW/gate and a propagation delay of 4.8 (14.5) ps/gate. Circuit simulation based on the experimental data predicts 140 ps/gate and 1 mW/gate for DMT direct-coupled FET logic circuits under standard loading conditions. DMTs and the technology developed here are very attractive for realizing low-power and/or high speed LSIs

Earlier investigations on the determination of beech wood density by linear analysis gave an unsatisfactory correlation of results with those of conventionally determined specific gravity. In this report an example is used to show that a decided correction of results is possible if the density of broad xylem rays is determined separately from that of the remaining tissues on the one hand, and if the measurement of the percentage of cell wall cross area is supported by findings in several levels. This, however, increases the microtechnical costs to such an extent that the method appears practicable in exceptional cases only.     

Kinetic studies of the electrochemical reaction between lithium and phthalocyanine II. Reduction reaction mechanism

The effects, during formation, of current density, charge capacity, and concentration and temperature of H₂SO₄ electrolyte on the capacity of tubular electrodes in lead/acid batteries have been studied. Electrode capacity was found to be maximum at a H₂SO₄ concentration of 1.05 sp. gr., a charge amount of 250% theoretical capacity, a current density of 0.44 A dm^?2, and an electrolyte temperature of 40 °C. A study of the soaking process for tubular electrodes showed the electrode capacity to be maximum when the acid absorption was about 170 mg of H₂SO₄ per g of oxide. Finally, the discharge overpotential of tubular electrodes was analyzed by a galvanostatic transient method.
