The corrosion behavior of an austenitic stainless steel (UNS S30400) has been characterized in a 10,000 h test conducted in hydrogenated, ammoniated water at 260 °C. The corrosion kinetics were observed to be parabolic, the parabolic rate constant being determined by chemical descaling to be 1.16 mg dm−2 h−1/2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in combination with argon ion milling and target factor analysis, was applied to provide an independent estimate of the rate constant that agreed with the gravimetric result. Based on the distribution of the three oxidized alloying constituents (Fe, Cr, Ni) with respect to depth and elemental state, it was found that: (a) corrosion occurs in a non-selective manner, and (b) the corrosion film consists of two spinel oxide layers--a ferrite-based outer layer (Ni0.2Fe0.8)(Fe0.95Cr0.05)2O4 on top of a chromite-based inner layer (Ni0.2Fe0.8)(Cr0.7Fe0.3)2O4. These compositions agree closely with the solvi phases created by immiscibility in the Fe3O4-FeCr2O4 binary, implying that immiscibility plays an important role in the phase separation process. 相似文献

The onset of hybrid alumina-based composites, which combines two or more nano-particles within the alumina matrix has already shown promising improvements in the matrix material. However, variations in mechanical properties including the optimum compositions that give improved properties faced with the development of alumina-based composites require further studies to understand the underlying mechanisms and synergistic effects of the nano-particle additions on the alumina matrix. In the current study, the structure and properties of Al?O?-graphene (0.5 wt%) and Al?O?–ZrO? (4 wt% and 10 wt%) composites fabricated via hot-pressing was studied as a baseline for multiple combinations. Even though the addition of 10 wt%ZrO? resulted in a 23% reduction in the grain size of the alumina matrix, the 4 wt%ZrO? addition resulted in a 14% increase in grain size as compared to the parent alumina matrix. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that there was approximately 85% monoclinic (m-ZrO2) vs. 15% tetragonal (t-ZrO2) crystal structures in the A4ZrO? sample whilst the A10ZrO? had approximately 93% m-ZrO2 vs. 7% t-ZrO2. The high-volume fraction of the monoclinic crystal structures in the A10ZrO? accounts for the induced microcracks in the sample since the transition from the ductile-tetragonal to brittle-monoclinic is associated with the exertion of compressive stresses on the alumina matrix by the associated elastic volume expansion of m-ZrO2. Also, the addition of 0.5 wt%graphene resulted in about 37% reduction in the grain size of the alumina matrix, and approximately 10% increase in hardness as a result of the distribution of graphene along the grain boundaries of the parent alumina matrix, which restricts grain coalescence and growth during processing. Furthermore, an increase up to 115% and 164% were observed in the fracture toughness (KIC) with the inclusion of 0.5 wt%graphene and 10 wt%ZrO? respectively, which was primarily ascribed to the fine-grained microstructures and toughening mechanisms of the intergranular graphene and ZrO? particles. 相似文献

Solar water distillation has long been used to provide potable water in locations where the quality of the local water is poor, especially in remote areas where other treatment options are not available. This paper reports on the performance of single-basin, solar stills for the removal of a selected group of inorganic, bacteriological, and organic contaminates. Laboratory and field trials were run on these stills in Southern New Mexico, USA, by New Mexico State University. The still design proved to be very successful in removing non-volatile contaminants from the water. The stills were also successful in removing bacteria if care was taken to avoid cross contamination from the raw water source. Stills had mixed success when it came to the removal of volatile organic compounds, such as pesticides. The ability to remove the organic compounds was directly dependent on the volatility of the compound as measured by the Henry’s law constant. The stills’ ability to remove contaminants from the water did not vary significantly between the units tested in the laboratory and those tested in the field. 相似文献

Autoignition characteristics of n-heptane/air, gasoline/air, and ternary surrogate/air mixtures were studied behind reflected shock waves in a high-pressure, low-temperature regime similar to that found in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine cycles. The range of experiments covered combustion of fuel in air for lean, stoichiometric, and rich mixtures (Φ=0.5, 1.0, 2.0), two pressure ranges (15-25 and 45-60 atm), temperatures from 850 to 1280 K, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) loadings of (0, 20, and 30%). The ignition delay time measurements in n-heptane are in good agreement with the shock tube study of Fieweger et al. (Proc. Combust. Inst. 25 (1994) 1579-1585) and support the observation of a pronounced, low-temperature, NTC region. Strong agreement was seen between ignition delay time measurements for RD387 gasoline and surrogate (63% iso-octane/20% toluene/17% n-heptane by liquid volume) over the full range of experimental conditions studied. Ignition delay time measurements under fuel-lean (Φ=0.5) mixture conditions were longer than with Φ=1.0 mixtures at both the low- (15-25 atm) and high- (45-60 atm) pressure conditions. Ignition delay times in fuel-rich (Φ=2.0) mixtures for both gasoline and surrogate were indistinguishable in the low-pressure (15-25 atm) range, but were clearly shorter at high-pressures (45-60 atm). EGR loading affected the ignition delay times similarly for both gasoline and surrogate, with clear trends indicating an increase in ignition delay time with increased EGR loading. Materials that respond to physiological stimuli are important in developing advanced biomaterials for modern therapies. The reversibility of covalent crosslinks formed by phenylboronate (PBA) and salicylhydroxamate (SHA) has been exploited to provide a pH‐responsive gel for application to the vaginal tract. Dynamic rheology reveals that the gel frequency‐dependent viscoelastic properties are modulated by pH. At pH 4.8 the viscous component dominates throughout most of the frequency range. As the pH increases, the characteristic relaxation time continues to increase while the G′Plateau levels off above pH 6. At pH 7.5, the elastic component dominates throughout the frequency sweep and is predominately independent of frequency. Particle tracking assesses the transport of both fluorescently labeled HIV‐1 and 100‐nm latex particles in the PBA–SHA crosslinked gel as a function of pH. At pH 4.8 the ensemble‐averaged mean squared displacement at lag times greater than three seconds reveals that transport of the HIV‐1 and 100‐nm particles becomes significantly impeded by the matrix, exhibiting diffusion coefficients less than 0.0002 µm2 s?1. This pH‐responsive gel thus displays properties that have the potential to significantly reduce the transport of HIV‐1 to susceptible tissues and thus prevent the first stage of male‐to‐female transmission of HIV‐1. 相似文献

Threshold-elevation (TE-) versus-mask-spatial-frequency (SF) curves and TE-versus-mask-contrast curves, produced by the oblique-masking technique, were reported for uncrossed stimuli (color-test-on-color-mask and luminance-test-on-luminance-mask) [Invest. Ophthalmol. Visual Sci. Suppl. 34, 751 (1993) and Vision. Res. 23, 873 (1983)]. The technique minimizes the artifacts that are due to spatial phase effects, spatial beats, spatial probability summation, and local cues. My goal was to measure these curves for crossed stimuli (color-test-on-luminance-mask and luminance-test-on-color-mask) by this oblique-masking technique and to compare the curves with those reported in previous studies. For this purpose threshold contrasts were measured by a yes-no procedure with randomized double staircases. Test targets were vertical spatially localized (D6) patterns, and masks were oblique sinusoidal patterns; both the test and the mask were presented simultaneously, for 2 s (Gaussian window), on a color monitor interfaced with an ATVista system and a Powell achromatizing lens. The test SF's were 0.125, 0.5, 2, 4, and 8 cycles per degree (cpd); mask SF's were 0.031-16 cpd; and mask contrasts were 6.25%-50%. Furthermore, the Red-Green channel was defined by the minimum flicker and the hue cancellation techniques. Results show mostly masking effect (TE > 1) at contrasts above threshold; sometimes, separability (TE = 1) and above-threshold facilitation (TE < 1) effects were also observed, depending on the test SF, the mask SF, the mask contrast, and the subject. In general, the magnitudes of TE's are smaller and the TE-versus-mask-SF curves are slightly narrower for the oblique-cross-masking conditions than those for the respective oblique uncross masking. In addition, the TE-versus-mask-contrast curves for the crossed conditions are mostly shallower than those for the respective uncrossed conditions. Furthermore, mostly the color-luminance asymmetry (color masks luminance more than luminance masks color) is found, in mild form, for SF's > or = 0.5 cpd. For the lower SF of 0.125 cpd, there is either a lack of asymmetry or a very mild asymmetry of the opposite kind (luminance masks color slightly more than color masks luminance) seems to prevail. In general, the oblique-masking data shows mild asymmetry and reduced facilitation; both are consistent with reduced local cues, similar to those shown by randomized phase data, thus making the data suitable for SF analysis; moreover, at high contrast, the masking data are consistent with those reported in previous studies. 相似文献
