The fabrication and characterization of hybrid architectures of ZnO nanowires (ZNWs) grown on organized carbon nanotubes (CNTs), by a two‐step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process involving CNT growth from a hydrocarbon source followed by ZNW growth using a Zn metal source, is reported. The ZNWs grow uniformly and radially from individual CNTs and CNT bundles, and the aligned morphology of the CNTs is not disturbed by the ZNW growth process. The nucleation and growth of ZnO crystals on CNTs are analyzed in relation to the classical vapor–solid mechanism. Importantly, the CNTs make uniform and distributed electrical contact to the ZNWs, with up to a 1000‐fold yield advantage over conventional ZNW growth on a flat substrate. Hybrid ZNW/CNT sheets are fabricated by scalable CVD, rolling, and printing methods; and their electrical properties, which are governed by transport through the anisotropic CNT network, are characterized. Functional interaction between the ZNWs and CNTs is demonstrated by photoconductive behavior and photocurrent generation of the hybrid material under UV illumination. There is significant future opportunity to extend these processing methods to fabricate other functional oxides on CNTs, and to build devices that harness the attractive properties of ZNWs and CNTs with high volumetric efficiency over large areas. 相似文献

Pituitary-derived bovine growth hormone (bGH) was administered to Jersey cows during late lactation for 7 d. Milk yield increased significantly during treatment and by a maximum of 49.6% on d 7. The magnitude of the increase was similar to that of mammary plasma flow (47.8 +/- 18.3%) over the same period. By 15-21 d after treatment, both variables had returned to pretreatment values. With respect to milk composition, bGH had negligible effect on lactose and fat concentrations but there were significant decreases in protein, sodium and chloride. Arterial plasma concentrations of bGH increased substantially during treatment, but the associated rise in insulin was not statistically significant. Haematocrit decreased significantly, the lowest value being recorded 3 d after bGH treatment ceased. Mammary respiratory quotient fell progressively after the start of bGH treatment and reached the lowest recorded value 3 d after treatment ceased (62.2 +/- 7.3% of pretreatment value). Glucose and acetate uptake by the mammary gland increased significantly during treatment, increase in glucose uptake being due both to a greater arterio-venous difference and to mammary plasma flow. There was strong evidence that the acute response in increased milk yield was associated with multiple effects in terms of mammary plasma flow and metabolism, as well as haematocrit changes indicative of increased plasma volume. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The ability of 13 different strains of psychrotrophs to release free fatty acids in milk was evaluated by using GC analysis. The 13 strains could be categorized into 3 groups: Group 1 consisted of bacteria that grew well and released large quantities of free fatty acids, group 2 consisted of bacteria that grew well but released low amounts of free fatty acids, and group 3 consisted of bacteria that did not grow well nor released large quantities of fatty acids. In group 1, 3 strains were determined to be highly lipolytic, releasing short‐chain fatty acids in amounts greater than reported threshold values. Group 3 consisted of 2 strains, which did not grow well in heat‐treated milk, and the subsequent release of free fatty acids was minor during the 10‐d monitoring time. The other 8 strains tested showed no specific pattern of fatty acid release and quantities of short‐chain fatty acids were not large, despite the ability to grow to high numbers in the treated milk. This work indicates that the lipolytic activity of psychrotrophs common in raw milk is specific to the species and a general prediction of free fatty acid release may not be possible. 相似文献

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to identify mineral phases and determine corrosion rates of granular iron samples from a 2-yr field column study. Similar to other studies, goethite, magnetite, aragonite, and calcite were found to be the major precipitated minerals, with Fe2(OH)2CO3 and green rust as minor phases. Based on TGA-mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, Fe0 corrodes at rates of 0.5-6.1 mmol kg(-1) d(-1) in the high NO3- (up to 13.5 mM) groundwater; this rate is significantly higher than previously reported. Porosity reduction was 40.6%-45.1% for the inlet sand/Fe0 interface and 7.4%-25.6% for effluent samples of two test columns. Normalized for treatment volumes, porosity loss values are consistent with studies that use high levels of SO4(2-) but are higher than those using low levels of corrosive species. Aqueous mass balance calculations yield corrosion rates similar to the TGA-MS method, providing an alternative to coring and mineralogical analysis. A severely corroded iron sample from the column simulating a 17-yr treatment throughput showed >75% porosity loss. Extensive porosity loss due to high levels of corrosive species in groundwater will have significant impact on long-term performance of permeable reactive barriers. 相似文献

The paper describes some water-treatment processes which have been investigated on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale for their effectiveness in removing toxic algal cells and the dissolved toxins microcystin-LR and anatoxin-a. Oxidation with ozone or potassium permanganate, or treatment by biological activated carbon, were found to be the most effective processes for removal of the dissolved toxins. Chlorination was effective only for the removal of microcystin-LR. Toxins, contained within algal cells, could be removed effectively by coagulation, clarification and filtration under suitable conditions. Consideration of the structure and properties of micro-cystin variants suggests that treatments which are suitable for removal of microcystin-LR and anatoxin-a should be suitable for removal of other microcystins. 相似文献

This paper surveys the state of the art in evolutionary algorithm visualization and describes a new tool called GAVEL. It provides a means to examine in a genetic algorithm (GA) how crossover and mutation operations assembled the final result, where each of the alleles came from, and a way to trace the history of user-selected sets of alleles. A visualization tool of this kind can be very useful in choosing operators and parameters and in analyzing how and, indeed, whether or not a GA works. We describe the new tool and illustrate some of the benefits that can be gained from using it with reference to three different problems: a timetabling problem, a job-shop scheduling problem, and Goldberg and Horn's long-path problem. BACKGROUND: The reliability of cardiac output obtained with the bolus technique is a problem. OBJECTIVES: To compare measurements of cardiac output measured with bolus and continuous techniques in patients with low cardiac output and to determine if measurements obtained with the continuous technique increased the number of subsequent clinical decisions. METHODS: In 60 intensive care patients, a nurse recorded a single continuous cardiac output measurement and then obtained the mean of 3 consecutive bolus determinations. The medical records of these 60 patients (experimental group) for the next 48 hours and of 60 other patients with regular or mixed venous oximetry catheters (control group) were reviewed to assess the occurrence of cardiac output events and the frequency of clinical decisions based on the events. RESULTS: Mean cardiac output was 4.46 L/min by the continuous technique and 5.20 L/min by the bolus technique (P = .011) for the experimental group. Median bias between the 2 types of measurements was -0.10 L/min (P = .79). Twenty-three of the pairs (38%) had an absolute percent difference greater than 15%. Of these, 18 (78%) had a higher bolus reading. Treatment decisions per 48 hours were 9.9 for the experimental group and 8.6 for the control group (P = .014). Median length of stay was 2 days less in the experimental group (P = .02), and mean highest cardiac output was 0.81 L/min higher (P = .009). CONCLUSIONS: Measurements of cardiac output determined with the continuous technique may be more precise than measurements determined with the bolus technique.
