Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of the median nerve as it transits the carpal tunnel, with an incidence of about 1% of the population. If surgery is needed, the treatment involves decompression of the median nerve followed sometimes by musculoskeletal outpatient rehabilitation. This paper presents a proof-of-concept pilot clinical trial in which the Rutgers Masters II haptic glove was tested on five subjects, who were two weeks post-hand surgery. Subjects trained for 13 sessions, 30 min per session, three sessions per week, and had no conventional outpatient therapy. Computerized measures of performance showed group effects in hand mechanical energy (1200% for the virtual ball squeezing and DigiKey exercises and 600% for the power putty exercise). Improvement in their hand function was also observed (a 38% reduction in virtual pegboard errors, and 70% fewer virtual hand ball errors). Clinical strength measures showed increases in grip (by up to 150%) and key pinch (up to 46%) strength in three of the subjects, while two subjects had decreased strength following the study. However, all five subjects improved in their tip pinch strength of their affected hand (between 20%-267%). When asked whether they would recommend the virtual reality exercises to others, four subjects very strongly agreed and one strongly agreed that they would.  相似文献

Incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (IINS) measurements of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of hydrogen trapped at dislocations in deformed PdH0.0013 have been performed using ARCS at the SNS and FANS at the NCNR. A comparison of data sets at 4 and 295 K indicates good agreement of the measured VDOS for the two instruments. The low hydrogen inventory (∼10-3 g) provides a test of the response of each instrument over the energy transfer range of 40-100 meV corresponding to the vibrational density of states of the hydrogen modes.  相似文献

The common presupposition of enterprise systems (ES) is that they lead to significant efficiency gains. However, this is only the case for well-implemented ES that are well-aligned with the organisation. The list of ES implementation failures is significant which is partly attributable to the insufficiently addressed fundamental problem of adapting an ES efficiently. As long as it is not intuitively possible to configure an ES, this problem will prevail because organisations have a non-generic character. A solution to this problem consists in re-thinking current practices of ES provision. This paper proposes a new approach based on configurable process models, which reflect ES functionalities. We provide in this paper a taxonomy of situations that can occur from a business perspective during process model configuration. This taxonomy is represented via so-called semantic configuration patterns. In the next step, we discuss so-called syntactic configuration patterns. This second type of configuration patterns implements the semantic configuration patterns for specific modelling techniques. We chose two popular process modelling languages in order to illustrate our approach.  相似文献

An airborne differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system has been developed at the NASA Langley Research Center for remote measurements of atmospheric water vapor (H(2)O) and aerosols. A solid-state alexandrite laser with a 1-pm linewidth and > 99.85% spectral purity was used as the on-line transmitter. Solid-state avalanche photodiode detector technology has replaced photomultiplier tubes in the receiver system, providing an average increase by a factor of 1.5-2.5 in the signal-to-noise ratio of the H(2)O measurement. By incorporating advanced diagnostic and data-acquisition instrumentation into other subsystems, we achieved additional improvements in system operational reliability and measurement accuracy. Laboratory spectroscopic measurements of H(2)O absorption-line parameters were perfo med to reduce the uncertainties in our knowledge of the absorption cross sections. Line-center H(2)O absorption cross sections were determined, with errors of 3-6%, for more than 120 lines in the 720-nm region. Flight tests of the system were conducted during 1989-1991 on the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Electra aircraft, and extensive intercomparison measurements were performed with dew-point hygrometers and H(2)O radiosondes. The H(2)O distributions measured with the DIAL system differed by ≤ 10% from the profiles determined with the in situ probes in a variety of atmospheric conditions.  相似文献

The therapeutic potential of cytolytic peptides is plagued by nonspecificity and enzymatic degradation. We report the first stable incorporation of melittin (a 26 amino acid amphipathic peptide) into an outer lipid monolayer of perfluorocarbon nanoparticles. Melittin binds avidly to the nanoparticles (dissociation constant approximately 3.27 nM) and retains its pore-forming activity after contact-mediated delivery to model bilayer membrane (liposomes) thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of perfluorocarbon nanoparticles as unique nanocarriers for cytolytic peptides.  相似文献

There is some evidence that the somatotrophic system in depression, as assessed by basal growth hormone (GH) concentrations and by GH releasing hormone (GHRH) challenge, might be dysfunctional. However, the rather limited data have been inconclusive so far and plasma concentrations of both insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) and binding proteins (IGFBP 1 to IGFBP-6) have not been measured simultaneously in depressed patients. We studied 24 severely depressed patients and 33 healthy controls and estimated 24-hour mean plasma cortisol, six-hour evening mean plasma growth hormone (GH), morning plasma IGF-I, IGFBP 2 and 3 and GH-binding protein (GH-BP). Twenty-four-hour mean cortisol (306 +/- 69 vs. 196 +/- 30 nmol/l, p < .001) and IGF-I (157 +/- 40 vs. 120 +/- 33 micrograms/l, p < .01) plasma concentrations were found to be significantly increased in depressed patients, while there was no difference in GH or binding proteins between both groups. MANOVA analysis revealed age and diagnosis to have main effects upon plasma IGF-I. Especially young age and a diagnosis of major depression are associated with higher plasma IGF-I. After treatment only patients in remission had attenuated IGF-I plasma concentrations. We conclude that plasma IGF-I is increased in acutely depressed patients similar to other states of hypercortisolemia.  相似文献
