Motion perception was studied for generalized apparent motion stimuli composed of 2 simultaneously visible elements whose luminance alternated between 2 values (only 1 element is visible at a time for standard apparent motion). It was demonstrated that 1st-order motion energy is neither necessary nor sufficient for the perception of apparent motion. Instead, it was found that counter-changing luminance--simultaneous luminance changes at 2 element locations--is the informational basis for perceiving luminance-defined apparent motion: Motion starts where luminance changes toward the background luminance value and ends where luminance changes away from the background luminance. The results were not attributable to either 2nd-order motion mechanisms (for which rectification precedes the computation of motion energy) or attention-based, 3rd-order motion mechanisms. The authors applaud A. S. Green, E. Rafaeli, N. Bolger, P. E. Shrout, and H. T. Reis's (2006) response to one-sided comparisons of paper versus electronic (plastic) diary methods (see record 2006-03820-006) and hope that it will stimulate more balanced considerations of the issues involved. The authors begin by highlighting areas of agreement and disagreement with Green et al. The authors review briefly the broader literature that has compared paper and plastic diaries, noting how recent comparisons have relied on study designs and methods that favor investigators' allegiances. The authors note some sorely needed data for the evaluation of the implications of paper versus plastic for the internal and external validity of research. To facilitate evaluation of the existing literature and assist in the design of future studies, the authors offer a balanced comparison of paper and electronic diary methods across a range of applications. Nonsampling errors are subtle, and strategies for dealing with them are not particularly well known within psychology. This article provides a compelling example of an incorrect conclusion drawn from a nonrandom sample: H. C. Lombard's (1835) mortality data. This example is augmented by a second example (A. Wald, 1980) that shows how modeling the selection mechanism can correct for the bias introduced by nonsampling errors. In episodic memory tasks, associations are formed between items presented close together in time. The temporal context model (TCM) hypothesizes that this contiguity effect is a consequence of shared temporal context rather than temporal proximity per se. Using double-function lists of paired associates (e.g., A–B, B–C) presented in a random order, the authors examined associations between items that were not presented close together in time but that were presented in similar temporal contexts. After learning, across-pair associations fell off with distance in the list, as if subjects had integrated the pairs into a coherent memory structure. Within-pair associations (e.g., A–B) were strongly asymmetric favoring forward transitions; across-pair associations (e.g., A–C) showed no evidence of asymmetry. While this pattern of results presented a stern challenge for a heteroassociative mediated chaining model, TCM provided an excellent fit to the data. These findings suggest that contiguity effects in episodic memory do not reflect direct associations between items but rather a process of binding, encoding, and retrieval of a gradually changing representation of temporal context. In a laboratory study using seven fresh-frozen anatomic specimen knees, the effect of total knee arthroplasty on the three-dimensional kinematics of the patella, femur, and tibia were measured. Experiments were performed in the intact knee, after division of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), after total knee arthroplasty, and after 10 degrees internal rotation, 10 degrees external rotation, 5-mm medial shift, and 5-mm lateral shift of the femoral component on the femur. The presence of a high lateral ridge on the anterior surface of the femoral component effectively prevented patellar subluxation or dislocation, but displaced and tilted the patella medially. Internal rotation or medial displacement of the femoral component exaggerated this medial patellar displacement and shift. External rotation of the femoral component corrected it, except at flexion angles greater than 100 degrees, where the femur was shifted medially on the tibia and externally rotated 15 degrees. This combination produced a net 10-mm medial displacement of the patella relative to the tibia at 120 degrees knee flexion. Lateral placement of the femoral component compensated for the effect of the high lateral ridge and allowed more normal patellar tracking while allowing tibiofemoral motions similar to those seen after sectioning of the ACL. The kinematics of the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joints were not reproduced with a total knee prosthesis that sacrifices the ACL. When using a prosthesis with a high lateral ridge, lateral placement of a femoral component prevented patellar dislocation and allowed patellar tracking patterns similar to those seen in the intact knee without further altering tibiofemoral motions. 相似文献

Aggressive reimbursement reform has been an imposing directive for care providers of ICU medicine. Timely knowledge of actual care routines obtained from a large sample of actively practicing physicians should be mandatory when developing any guidelines or practice standards. A questionnaire was therefore designed by the steering committee of the ACCP Council on Critical Care and sent to its members. The 1,294 responses were analyzed for demographics of the individual practitioner, local aspects of ICU staffing and policies, reimbursement, and a specific practice issue, nutrition. The typical respondent was aged 41 to 50 (41 percent), was a pulmonary subspecialist (68 percent), was not critical care certified (55 percent), worked 25 to 50 percent of his or her total time in the ICU (40 percent), and would continue ICU practice despite poor reimbursement (82 percent). Physicians practiced within a group (53 percent), in a 100- to 500-bed hospital (69 percent), with house staff available (60 percent), and predominantly cared for Medicare patients (55 percent). Objective: To determine whether socioemotional disinhibition and executive dysfunction are related to dissociable patterns of brain atrophy in neurodegenerative disease. Previous studies have indicated that behavioral and cognitive dysfunction in neurodegenerative disease are linked to atrophy in different parts of the frontal lobes, but these prior studies did not establish that these relationships were specific, which would best be demonstrated by a double dissociation. Method: Subjects included 157 patients with neurodegenerative disease. A semiautomated parcellation program (Freesurfer) was used to generate regional cortical volumes from structural MRI scans. Regions of interest (ROIs) included anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). Socioemotional disinhibition was measured using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Principal component analysis including 3 tasks of executive function (EF; verbal fluency, Stroop Interference, modified Trails) was used to generate a single-factor score to represent EF. Results: Partial correlations between ROIs, disinhibition, and EF were computed after controlling for total intracranial volume, Mini-Mental State Examination, diagnosis, age, and education. Brain regions significantly correlated with disinhibition (ACC, OFC, IFG, and temporal lobes) and EF (MFG) were entered into separate hierarchical regressions to determine which brain regions predicted disinhibition and EF. OFC was the only brain region to significantly predict disinhibition, and MFG significantly predicted EF performance. A multivariate general linear model demonstrated a significant interaction between ROIs and cognitive–behavioral functions. Conclusions: These results support a specific association between orbitofrontal areas and behavioral management as compared with dorsolateral areas and EF.
